About MeHi! I’m Sofia Santoianni, and I am passionate about

all things creative, especially design. I am a graphic and web designer located in Montreal, Quebec who produces satisfying, visually pleasing designs. I am highly influenced by editorial and fine art, and that is evident in my work. I do not like constraining myself to certain areas of graphic design; I genuinely enjoy it all, everything varying from logos to page layout design (even web *gasp*).

I value honesty, teamwork, friendliness, creativity, and quality. My passion for design is shown in the quality of my work. By having me as your designer, you can ensure that I will listen to your needs and transform your ideas and visions into something tangible. It is important to enjoy what you do, and for me, that is to create and have fun doing it.

unik

Software used – Illustrator, Photoshop, watercolors

Objective – This was a personal project. The plan was to create a skincare brand that embodies freshness and zenness through the use of plants.

Solution – I used watercolors to create the pattern for the packaging, and fine-tuned it in Photoshop. The brand name ‘unik’ is pronounced ‘unique’; it was a funky way of writing it. The logo uses the font “Made Bruno“ and was worked by fixing the ‘i’ and having equal amounts of space between letters. The color palette that I chose was black, white, and a shade of green to convey the nature-feel and serenity. The implementation of plants is shown through the product names; ‘ZZ Toner’ comes from the ZZ plant, same goes for ‘Evergreen Eye Cream’, that is from the Chinese Evergreen plant, etc.

Software used – Illustrator, Photoshop

Objective – ‘nonna knits’ was a personal project. The goal was to combine my passion for knitting along with my passion for graphic design. Also, I wanted to create a sticker pack to go with it.

Solution – Friends call me “nonna” because I knit, so that is how the name came about. Personally, I view knitting as a feel-good hobby, and I wanted the brand to embody a 70’s grandmother feel while being trendy. The colors are warm and pastel to represent the coziness of knits. The essential knitting tools (safety pin, yarn, etc.) were illustrated into icons to create a print. The brand represents knitting made cool. The Instagram incudes the stickers and icons for the stories and posts. The stickers are used on Instagram and come with each purchase.

Atwater Farmer’s Market

Software used – Illustrator, InDesign

Objective – The goal was to create a promotional poster for the Atwater Farmer’s Market. The composition had to represent the place. The poster needed to be bilingual as well.

Solution – I decided to play with typography, to bring the focus away from the logo and sponsors. I chose to stick with a color palette and illustrations that conveyed a fresh summer feeling. The curved text, along with the positioning of the bees, and the English/French “Atwater Farmer’s Market” were done to show movement. This makes it all flow together when reading it.

Alphabet Poster

Software used – Photoshop

Objective – The objective was to generate a poster that could be displayed in a museum. The challenge for this was the time constraint of two hours, along with having to use every letter of the alphabet only once.

Solution – In a spur of the moment, I got the idea of designing a violin. The old English font letters were used to build the instrument, and the cursive letters ‘Y’ and

‘O’ were used to decorate the background. The colors complement each other well because of the high contrast. Overall, I am quite pleased with the result.

Tame Impala Beyond Vinyl

Software used – Photoshop

Objective – The challenge for this project was to make a potential vinyl cover and label for a singer or band. It also had to respect the style of the chosen artist with fonts, colors, and key elements. It had to emulate a real vinyl.

Solution – I chose one of my favorite bands, Tame Impala. They have a psychedelic style, so I took stock photos and applied many layers of hue and saturation, distortions, and vibrance to get this result. I titled the album “Beyond”, as it gives off an ominous feel and that works with the covers.

It’s a Game! Wine Label

Software used – Illustrator

Objective – The purpose of this was to produce a conceptual Tuscan red wine label for the Bibi Graetz vineyard. The catch was that the label had to be in the abstract impressionism style, strictly using brush strokes.

Solution – The concept behind the painting and the chosen colors was ‘getting wine drunk with friends.’ The colors and brush stroke exude a feeling of happiness and carefreeness, the same feeling friends and booze radiate. To contrast this, I added flourish ornaments for elegance, as well as a cursive font and a thin serif one.

Software used – Illustrator

Objective – The goal was to fabricate three fruit juice labels for Les Vergers Lafrance. To further explain, a new art brush had to be made to draw each fruit based on the images provided. The only tools allowed were brushes, pen tool, and type tool.

Solution – I went with a realism approach; many hours were spent, and brush strokes were used to get this result. As for layout, I kept the juice information small and simple, to keep the focus on the illustrations. A serif font was applied to the brand name whereas the rest of the typography is in a sans-serif one to show hierarchy.

Photo Composite

Before

Software used – Photoshop

Objective – For this project, the objective was to construct a photo realistic illustration. The final image had to be made in such a way that it looks photographed. The concept, color palette, lighting and shading all had to be considered.

Solution – My inspiration for this project was the poster “Echoes from The Dark Side of The Moon” by Tom Masse. That poster depicts 50 Pink Floyd songs. In addition, the man with the burning newspaper was inspired by the bands “Wish You Were Here” album cover. As for the rest, I let my mind roam free and this was the outcome.

Software used – Illustrator

Objective – This was a personal project. I wanted to test myself and illustrate a face because that is something I had never done before.

Solution – I found a stock-free photo on Unsplash and brought it into Illustrator. With the use of the eyedrop tool, pen tool, and two brushes, I was able to recreate the original picture.

Tourisme Montreal Newsletter

Software used – InDesign

Objective – The idea was to produce a monthly publi-cation for Tourisme Montreal. It had to feature events and touristic sites for visitors.

Solution – My month of choice was July, one of the busiest in terms of events in Montreal. I chose a range of five colors for my color palette since they are fun and summer-like. To build hierarchy and increase legibil-ity, I used a background color for two out of three of the issues per page. In addition, I used a grid system to create balance. Also, the images help flow the reader’s eyes from one section to another.

Bling Magazine

Software used – InDesign

Objective – The purpose was to create a publication that uses visual style to reinforce their brand.

Solution – My goal was to form a blend between Elle and Seventeen magazine. It is similar to the former because it’s classy, and similar to the latter due to the bright colors. The idea was for it to look like an issue that would be found in a salon. The cover image is luxurious and chic looking, with an 80’s aesthetic to it, and for this reason I called it “Bling”. By looking through many old magazines for inspiration, it let me create an accurate, nostalgic 2-page spread.

Illustrator Training Manual

Software used – InDesign, Illustrator

Objective – The objective of this project was to create a training manual for the topic of our choice. It needed to include front matter (table of contents, intro, and license), 3 chapters, visuals, 24 pages, and back matter (index and glossary).

Solution – I went with an Illustrator manual and decided to build my color palette from the program’s logo. I used a grid system to keep everything aligned and stuck with the rectangular theme. It features screen captures of the program as well as illustrations of the tools, and pro-tips throughout to assist the reader.

Cakes By Afzaal Client Site

Software used – Wix, Photoshop

Objective – The challenge was to create a responsive website that embodied the baking feel, had a modern look, and showcased the client’s work. The reason they wanted a site was to expand their business beyond social media. The client already had an established brand on Instagram, so it was just a matter of incorporating it into a site. Time constraint: September - November

Solution – I incorporated elements of my client’s logo throughout the website with colors and textures. The design was kept fun but also simple to keep the focus on what they do. The website was made as a one-pager so everything a customer would need is there, such as the about, gallery, and contact. This client project helped to familiarize myself more with the Wix platform.

Conceptual Ad

Software used – Photoshop

Objective – This ad had to use an idiom for the slogan, and then relate that to the concept of the advertisement.

Solution – The expression “that’s the last straw” is used to signify the breaking point in a series of bad events. The subject I chose was ocean pollution and the straw ban movement within it. As a visual I photoshopped straws floating in the water and chose Starbucks as the brand. They vowed to ban straws in stores by 2020, so it was fitting.

Ad Campaign

Software used – Illustrator

Objective – The concept for this was to make a public awareness campaign, to build public recognition of an important issue.

Solution – I chose underage drinking, and showcased it through juice boxes using elements that would convey the type of alcoholic beverage it was representing. From left to right the drinks are tequila, martini, and rum and coke. I used the slogan “It’s more than just juice” because when first viewed it does seem like just juice, but once analyzed, the alcoholic beverage becomes clear. I added a fact and chose the company Drug Free Kids to complete it. Quirky illustration, with a strong message.

IT’S MORE THAN JUST JUICE.

Alcohol significantly impairs a teenager’s driving ability. An impared driver puts themselves and everyone else at risk.
