Graphic Design Jason Star (proud Cougar parent of Laney)

It all began in a talent show in a North Carolina high school where a student flipped a water bottle and landed it standing up. A video was taken of it and immediately went viral. This has made many kids and teenagers attempt their own flips of water bottles in order to land it. Other people try to land the bottle on the cap. This activity has become a big trend all across America.

There are mixed feelings about bottle flipping, though. Some people like it, and some people cannot stand it. “It is cool as long as it doesn’t happen during the school day,” says 8th grade teacher, Ms. Meegan. Some schools are banning it from classes. Other kids are excited about it and are proud when they land the bottle. “I think it is very satisfying when you land a good bottle flip,” says 7th grade student, Joe Gonnella.

Water bottle flipping is deeply affecting the media. There are hundreds of videos on Google, Facebook, and more social media websites. This is because many people are getting very addicted. Many have tried to flip different objects in different ways. They say it is best to have the bottle one third full for it to be easier to land. To land it on the cap is much harder. People have flipped water bottles, Gatorade bottles, and many other bottles and have failed and succeeded.

This may go on for a long time, or this may be one of those trends that end quickly. Overall, many people despise the flipping, and many cannot stop flipping.

It is called bottle flipping and it is exactly what it sounds like. Many kids across America have become obsessed with flipping water bottles and trying to land them.

Well, by the time you read this, the election will have been decided, and whether You’re with Her or wanted to Make America Great Again, our leader for the next four years is now decided. It’s been quite the election (do you remember when Jeb Bush was a shoo-in for the nomination?) but it leaves us to wonder: what if us kids were the ones voting? The nominations would certainly be very different, but then again, maybe they wouldn’t be. It’s an interesting thing to think about, but I suppose the only way to really find out, at least for kids at Coonley, is to go right out and ask. Here’s the results of a survey of 220 5th through 8th graders. Enjoy!

POLITICS

If Kids Could Vote...BY ANDREW RUGER

After voting, well, we’re right back where we started, with good ol’ Hillary and Donald still battling to win the presidency. However, Bernie Sanders actually came really close this time around to winning the nomination, and Coonley voters voting Democratic were an overwhelming majority. Another big difference with the voters being kids is that, well, someone voted for Harambe. Jill Stein was a surprise, who in the early stages of the voting had a good share of the percentage, and in the meantime JohnKasich,Ohio’sgovernor, gotsevenvotes. The last points I’d like to make are that someone actually voted for Rand Paul (nothing wrong with that, but he’s just not exactly a popular candidate), and finally, whoever you are, another congratulations to Josh Wells.

Side Note: There is a third-party candidate named Rod Silva, running on behalf of the Nutrition Party. The Nutrition Party is literally a party completely dedicated to healthy food choices. Part of me is wondering if he ever thought he had a chance in this election. Visit his campaign website here: rodsilva2016.com. There are lots of other wacky candidates out there, so I encourage you to find out more.

Another Side Note: I wonder how many people will actually move to Canada due to the outcome of this election?

01Acadia Park, ME The historic unpaved carriage roads of Acadia Park are not open to regular cars. These trails are only meant for biking and hiking. The park offers maple, birch, and poplar trees. These trees offer orange, red, and yellow leaves to enhance the fall scenery.

02Crater Lake Park, OR This is a breathtaking sight that’s set in a harsh environment with a very short window for visits. Even in July, there’s still snow on some of the hiking trails, and by mid-October you’re too late—it’s already winter again. The best time to visit is September, when the weather is crisp and the summertime tourists are long gone.

03Grand Teton National Park, WY Tetons are large trees consisting of cottonwoods, aspen, and willow trees which burst with orange, yellow, and red in fall. This is also a rare time to see the park’s wildlife start preparing for winter.

04 Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA This area is well known for its volcanoes but also provides great scenery and beautiful fall colors. The trees at this national park turn golden yellow in the fall. The trees consist of aspens, oaks, and sagebrush.

05Mount Rainier National Park, WA Starting in late September, every huckleberry bush, aspen, cottonwood, vine maple, elderberry, willow, and tamarack (western larch) bursts into hues of gold, amber, and crimson. This is very different than the Eastern parts of the country but is still spectacular.

06Olympic National Park, WA Fall colors are scarce at Olympic National Park, with only occasional splashes from maple trees among the evergreen trees. But there’s an even bigger draw in autumn because it’s salmon spawning season, when you can watch Coho salmon leap up the Quillayute and Sol Duc rivers.

07Redwood National Park, CA The gigantic redwood trees make this National park so popular. They do not change color, but in fall it is time to see the black bear, mountain lion, bobcat, and elk in this beautiful setting.

08Rocky Mountain National Park, CO The famous Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park tops out at over 12,000 feet, providing an exceptional vantage point to view the vibrant gold aspens. The park is dominated by a species known as the quaking aspen, which has a flat stem causing its leaves to quiver at the slightest breeze. The effect is mesmerizing in the sunlight.

09Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN/NC The smoky mountains are a beautiful place filled with many trees and wildlife. The colors of the leaves in autumn are yellow, orange, red, and even purple! The trees that provide these colors consist of maples, oaks, and poplars.

10Yosemite National Park, CA The spectacular Yosemite National Park is mostly evergreen trees, and not known for its fall foliage. This makes it ideal for autumn visitors, who get the park’s normally overrun granite cliffs, ancient giant sequoias, and waterfalls practically to themselves in October and November.

Hurricane MatthewBY ANDREW RUGER

Hurricane Matthew, a category five hurricane, tore through the Caribbean the first weekend of October, killing over one thousand people. Most of the fatalities were in the small Caribbean nation of Haiti, which unfortunately has been hit by a number of powerful natural disasters in the past decade, including the infamous 2010 earthquake. Others were killed in Colombia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Dominican Republic, and sadly, 38 died in the southeast U.S.

State officials urged people to evacuate the areas that would likely be hit by the hurricane, emphasizing the dangers of storm surge and flooding, as well as the need to get to high ground. In President Obama’s address to the nation, he may have said it best, telling residents of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas that they could easily rebuild property, but that they could not rebuild a life.

The hurricane lost strength as it traveled farther north, but it was nonetheless extremely dangerous.

Is There Lead in Your Chocolate?BY ISABELLA FARACI

Chocolate is a favorite treat loved by many. Chocolate is even healthy if you choose a high-quality dark chocolate that has lots of antioxidants and is low in sugar. But, did you know that your chocolate may be exposing you to an unhealthy ingredient? Let me tell you this, it’s not listed on the ingredients label.

A California-based consumer advocacy group (As You Sow) tested 50 cocoa products, and found more than half contained lead and cadmium levels above the California State limit. Cadmium is a metal with dangerous properties similar to lead. While manufacturers say the lead is only found in small amounts and comes in naturally occurring sources, As You Sow believes that the levels may be unnecessarily high.

Why is lead dangerous? Exposure to small amounts of lead over a long period of time is called chronic toxicity. Lead is particularly dangerous because once it gets into a person’s blood stream, it can damage red blood cells and limit their ability to carry oxygen to the organs and tissues that need it.

Lead poisoning can lead to a variety of health problems, including:● Decreasedboneandmusclegrowth● Poormusclecoordination● Damagetothenervoussystem,kidneys,and/orhearing● Speechandlanguageproblems● Seizuresandunconsciousness(incaseofextremelyhighleadlevels)

As You Sow and other consumer groups like it are really important for keeping people informed and safe about the food they eat. As the holidays approach, it’s not a bad idea to do some research about all that chocolate you may be eating.

SPORTS

Hey this is your Coonley Fall Sports recap. We’ve interviewed a few coaches and students for this recap from football, volleyball, soccer, and cross country to talk about their team and sports. Remember thatnotallcoaches/studentsarenotincludedinthisrecap.

Coonley Fall Sports Recap BY JUSTIN SEGOVIA

The Craze Journal: Pokémon Go BY FRANCES PAWELCZYK AND LILY STERN

FOOTBALLFootball players have developed their sense of teamwork as well. Players appreciate their chemistry on the field and have the added benefits of getting to play with friends. At the time of the interview, the team had only suffered one loss. Coach Cruz and Coach Teruel think highly of the team, pushing them to work through interesting trick plays and work with one another. Coach Cruz says he started coaching because, “Football teaches hard work, teamwork and how to become a great young man and woman.”

VOLLEYBALLCoachErnstsayshethinksboththe5th/6thand7th/8thteamshavedonereallywellthisyear. At the time of the interview, both teams were undefeated. The volleyball players like the way they need to work together to score a point. They know how to work together, but are also really playful and learn a lot from one another. Coach Ernst says, “If you are dedicated and committed to learning and improving during practice, the wins will take care of themselves.”

SOCCERCoach Corcoles, leader of the 5th and 6th grade team hopes to make the city finals with his players. With many years of playing in his background, Corcoles knows what it takes to build a great team. “Our strategy is based on the value of teamwork and trying to help each other gain possession of the ball as soon as possible.” Players think they have “a good set of guys” and good sportsmanship. One player said, “It is fun because you can play defense and offense in one fluent game instead of time constantly being stopped.”

CROSS COUNTRYCross Country had a terrific season with great coaches and players. Coach Price says, “We do our best and push ourselves. We practice hard with the skills needed to improve our times.” Players said that even though it’s an individual sport, they feel a sense of comradery with other teammates. They like the stretches, places they get to run, and how the coaches push them to finish strong.

From the Helpless and Cheated“ We have Pokémon Go players showing up at a house that doesn’t play at all, we do not participate, downloaded etc. PLZ remove the address. For others that do, it appears that our gmail account was used incorrectly for others to participate and use this address.”

“ I had my account taken away from me without any warning or contact from Niantic. I have emailed them and sent in an appeal form against my ban. I would like to have all my money that I spent on their game refunded or my account returned to me so I can continue to play their game.”

From Trainers“ I love this game, it’s got me off mycouchandoutwalking3-4kilometers every night. And the best part is on the weekends my kids join me. I just wish they would add player-vs-player Pokémon battles and trading. It would be nice to be able to open your own local gym or to request gym locations or Pokestops. I’d even pay extra for that.”

“ Dunno why all the bad mouthing for an awesome game that takes me and my partner back to our childhood! It’s been a few months, and it’s come along quite a bit. Impatient some people! Still love the game Niantic keep it up!”

From Coonley Students“ Pokémon Go is definitely affecting my life. My brother loves Pokémon, and when the game came out, he was instantly hooked. When I went to summer camp, my mom started playing, and since then, when she comes home, he’s like, “What’d you catch today? How many eggs have you hatched? When can we do a big evolution?” It’s taking over our life, without any physical presence.”

SARAH, 6TH GRADE

“ I think this game is an okay idea. I think that it has some good qualities, like it gets people outside, and you can play it with your friends. But it has many dangers. People are always staring at their phones, and they might not see something or someone; they could get seriously injured. Also it is a danger because bad people can be waiting at your local ‘Pokestops.’ I think it is maybe okay, but I would never play it.”

RUBY, 6TH GRADE

“ I think Pokémon Go is a really neat idea, and I like how the Pokémon can be found anywhere in real places. It uses some cool technology. However, it has made lots of controversy, and some people have gotten themselves into tough situations, being nearly hit by trains or searching for Pokémon in war memorials, to name only a few. I don’t play, but it does seem fun. That being said, some are totally addicted (though the craze is fading away).”

ANDREW, 7TH GRADE

“ There are pros and cons. The Pokémon are cute, and the game, in theory, isn’t meant to be dangerous or intrusive, only supposed to be a fun game for Pokémon lovers. But in reality, the game has turned out to be a little more controversial. People get arrested and there have been injuries and deaths. Houses that don’t play are being invaded and “pokestops” could be used for malicious reasons. I don’t play because of these reasons. Pokémon Go was a good idea, but people have taken it too far.”

LILY, 6TH GRADE

“ I think that it is a cool game. I’ve played it before and like it. I think there should be safety hazard warnings, and people should be more aware that things have happened to people playing this game. It is amazing for Pokémon lovers such as my brother, and I used to collect them to. It really does bring the game to life.”

LIFE & STYLE

A Brief History of the CTA BY ROBERT BASIEWICZ AND GRADY WILKINS

Turkey Oreos

DIFFICULTY: Easy

WHAT YOU NEED: Oreos, candy corn, chocolate chips, mini peanut butter cups (optional), and candy eyes.

DIRECTIONS: Take off one cookie part of the Oreo. SAVE BOTH PARTS! Melt ¼ cups of chocolate chips in the microwave or on the stove. If you’re melting the chocolate in the microwave, put it in for 30 second intervals, stirring in between each time. With a spoon, spread the chocolate on the cookie. Put one peanut butter cup (or 6-7 chocolate chips) on your cookie. Take two candy eyes and put melted chocolate on the back. Then, put them on the cookie on top of the peanut butter cup or chocolate chips. Set that part aside. With the cookiethathasthecream,arrange4-6candycorn pieces on the top to look like feathers, and put two at the bottom, one on each side. Going back to the face, put melted chocolate on the bottom of one piece of candy corn, and put it right under the space between the eyes. Then, put the cookie on the cookie with the cream, and push it down forcefully, but carefully. There you have your turkey Oreo! You can repeat this to as many Oreos as you like.Source: http://happyhomefairy.com/easy-turkey-treats/

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has 208 bus and 8 subway lines. Two are underground and the rest are elevated over the streets. The “L” refers to how these trains are elevated. The CTA is always expanding and making changes, whether it’s adding new bus stops to routes, renovating, or adding stations to the L. On an average weekday about 1.64 million people take the CTA every single day!

TheCTAwasofficiallyfoundedonOctober1,1947.Butthe first horse car service started on April 25, 1859. Then, on January 28, 1882 the first cable car service started. The first electric streetcars went into service on October 2,1890. This is pretty ironic because streetcars are a great way of transportation which many large cities in the world have but Chicago unfortunately got rid of them.

Chicago adopted the use of buses which number 208 different routes. While the L-train is named by color, buses are by number. The CTA covers the whole Chicagoland area including some of the near suburbs like Evanston, Skokie, East Chicago, Lincolnwood, Chicago Heights, Des Plaines, and more. The CTA is very important for the people in Chicago because so many take it every day and depend on it to take them where they need to go.

Turkey Fruit Roll Ups

DIFFICULTY: Medium

WHAT YOU NEED: Fruit Roll Ups, Markers, Scissors,ButterKnifeorKitchenScissors,Brown Paper, and Circular Object (optional).

DIRECTIONS: With the brown paper, use the circular object and trace a circle with the marker. You can freehand this, though. Then, draw eyes and a beak. Draw the wattle by making two small overlapping circles, the top one more like an oval, under the circle. Cut the turkey out, and set it aside. With the knife or kitchen scissors, cut the fruit roll ups into skinny triangles that are tall. You are basically doing a zig zag motion through the fruit roll up.Take4-5trianglesandarrangethemlikefeathers around the paper turkey. AT LAST! IT WAS MY TURN TO HAVE A SWIVELLY CHAIR, AND I GOT THE BIG COMFY ONE! As soon as my stuff was in my locker, I threw the boring old plastic blue chair to the back of the room and raced to the object of beauty that would be MINE for the day. Sinking into the heavenly soft gray plush, I lazily rolled to my desk. This day was gonna be great! As I picked up my pencil, though, something seemed off. I could’ve sworn the chair was trembling. Shivering, even. In fact, it seemed like it was moving out from under me!!

I fell to the floor and giggles erupted. My face sweaty and the color of a tomato, I sat back down and gripped the armrests to make sure I wouldn’t fall again. A voice squealed inside my head, “Mind the triceps, pudgy!”

I said out loud, “I’m NOT pudgy!”

Everyone laughed, and I lay my head on my desk embarrassed, trying to collect whatever was left of my dignity. But I had scarcely recovered when I heard the enigmatic voice again, and only then did I realize it was coming from the chair!

“My name is Swivee, and you are a fat couch potato. I hate humans! Always so vain and lazy. Oh, if it wasn’t for that STUPID resident principal, I couldn’t care less if you sat on me! I mean wonderful Principal Rees! Isn’t she special!” the chair said, turning into a sappy mess. I knew there had to be more.

“What did the resident principal do?” I carefully asked, not ready for another humiliating event.

“She cast a spell on various inanimate objects around Coonley and made them magical! I can feel now, and believe me, it’s not all awesome like you humans think it is. To me, the concept is just stupid. Now get your hands off my triceps or you will PAY!!!”

There was a painful jolt, and my hand jerked into the air. Unfortunately, I found a sharp finger pointing straight at me. “Yes? What is 3x + 73?” the teacher probed. I had been tuning out (thanks to Swivee) and I didn’t understand. I shrugged sheepishly and the teacher sighed.

“You have been awfully disruptive this morning, Thelma. I think someone else should get the chair. Jocelyn?” Jocelyn, my best friend, walked up and we traded chairs. I handed it over with a sigh of half relief and half resignation. Life at Coonley was about to get very interesting, very fast.

DIY Thanksgiving Decoration

Apple CandlesBY ANASTASIA LUKASIEWICZ

Instead of using those old candles from last year, you can make your own DIY candles that are super fast, easy & fit in with any autumn or Thanksgiving theme! Here is how you can make your own apple candles! You can use any color apple that you want!

WHAT YOU NEED: • Apples (as many

as you want) • A melon baller• A knife• A pen• Tea lights

01First, you need to place one tea light on top of an apple. Your apple should be sitting right side up.

02Use the pen to outline the tea light on the apple.

03Now, use the knife to make a small cut along the circle that you have made.

04You will now use the melon baller to hollow out the circle. You only need to hollow out enough to fit the tea light inside.

05After you have hollowed out the hole, place the tealight in the hole. Make sure that it fits snugly.

06Now set out or put in fridge to keep fresh for later.

07Light the tealight and you have your very own DIY Apple Candle!
