A Note from the President
Over the winter months a number of our members have been very busy re-decorating and carrying out minor repairs to the Society Office to make it a more welcoming venue for those who visit and
use our facilities. The work, co-ordinated by our Chairman Hugh McKirgan, was completed in
time for the new opening arrangements agreed by the Council.
Since February the office has been open on Saturday mornings from 10 am to 1 pm with each
branch taking turns to assist those doing research. This has been in addition to the usual
Wednesday afternoon opening from 2 - 4 pm.
The Society now has a new up-to-date computer with various family history programmes, a
photocopier, microfiche and microfilm readers, an extensive range of townland maps covering most of Northern Ireland as well as our library of books and exchange journals. Recently a
number of CD's, including Griffith's Valuation and the Flaxholders List of 1796 have also been
purchased.
Our overseas members who may be thinking of visiting Northern Ireland will be made especially welcome and we can arrange for the office to be opened to suit them as long as we are told in
advance the date they wish to visit.
The Council gladly welcomes any member who wishes to help with any aspect of Society business
whether it concerns the Office/Library, the journal or contributing to any of the Branch programmes. Contributions of articles or snippets of information from overseas members are, as usual, especially welcome. By publishing your request you open up the possibility that someone in one of our
branches may just be following a similar line of research - it happens quite frequently.

SOCIETY NEWS
The Society is celebrating its 21st birthday this year by holding its Annual General
Meeting at the Airport Hotel, Aldergrove on Saturday 20th May 2000.
All the Branches will be represented and displays of their resources will be available for everyone to see.
This will be a chance for members to look at local records not available elsewhere.
Charles Kelly from Troon & District Family History Society will speak on emigration from Scotland to
Northern Ireland and the day will end with a 21st birthday dinner.
We hope that the convenient venue will give an opportunity for some of our associate members to come over and join with us in the celebrations.
Details of the arrangements are in the flyer enclosed with this journal.
CORRECTION In Journal 10.2 under the heading "Honour for Former Chairmen" the
words "Former Chairmen" should have read "Former Presidents".
