A Note from the President

One of the lasting benefits of the commemoration of 1798 which, as I mentioned in our last issue, has been marked by a wide range of events throughout Ireland is the amount of research on this

topic which continues to be done and is being made available to the general public

Constant research and publication of a wide range of historical topics is opening up increasing

opportunities for genealogists to expand their horizons, especially as the Internet enlarges to

make the information readily available I have noticed in the many overseas journals which

frequently arrive in our Society office the excellent work other societies are doing to publish material relevant to their areas but which often may be of wider use to researchers in other countries

I can see in a few years' time genealogists, in the comfort of their own homes, drawing on the resources of distant archives, as yet unavailable, to further their own very specific research I relish the possibility of every document in every library and record office throughout the world

becoming available at the click of a "mouse", or its offspring - that will be a feast for the genealogist

to tuck into until exhausted

John Bassett, Honorary President

I would like to express my thanks to the members of the editorial team for their superb efforts in this their fourth issue A great deal of time is spent in putting together each issue and the

support of all Society members is needed, by offering articles, whether short or long, about any aspect of family history

Plans for the 2000 Family History Conference are beginning to take shape The proposed date is 4th June 2000 and the venue is the University of Ulster at Jordanstown, Co Antrim As the information builds up we hope to provide a more precise timetable in the next issue of the journal

I am very pleased to be able to bring you news of the Society's latest publications -

Bill McGrew's book of Omagh Gravestone Inscriptions will be launched at the Ulster American Folk Park by courtesy of the Director of Emigration Studies, Dr Brian Lambkin, on Saturday 12th December Please see your membership renewal form for details of how to order

Armagh County Museum Records Index as mentioned on page 10 of the last journal ( 9 1) is available on microfiche and the popular book of gravestone inscriptions from Carnmoney cemetery "Carved in Stone" is also available in microfiche format The cost for each microfiche is 2 UK, 3 elsewhere, and they are available from the General Secretary at our usual

address

James Davidson Editor
