ACCESSIBILITY FUNDRAISER UPDATE: On December 9 the church kicked off its Accessibility Li and
Remodeling Fundraising Project with a goal of $125,000.00. Since that )me we have received in pledges
over $96,000.00 of which $64,250.00 cash has already been received. To God be the glory!
Phase I, which includes adding the li and remodeling the lobby, has been reached and soon you will see
the work begin. We only need another $29,000.00 to complete Phase II which includes replacing the very
worn carpet and seats in the Sanctuary. Our desire is to have the work completed with Dedica)on Sunday
to take place by Easter.
It’s not too late to give, or increase your pledge, to reach our goal. Pledge cards can be picked up at
church or you can email the office to request one. Watch the bulle)n for regular updates.
NEW PREACHING SERIES: GOD’S SUPER HEROES OF THE BIBLE. During January and February
the preaching series will be looking at some of God’s Super Heroes of the Bible. We will learn about some
of the men and women of the Bible who were no different than any of us, and yet God used them in pow-
erful ways. If you would like to share a paragraph about one of your Bible Heroes, please send to Pastor
Deano and he will read them during the messages.
STRATEGIC PLANNING SUMMIT: Saturday, January 19, from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm at church. All trus-

as we begin to look at our church's ministries and facili)es and begin to make plans for the next 3 - 5 years.

Lessons Learned from a Cardboard Box The rain that came down was bitterly cold. Our coats were soaked. The fires provided warmth, but the rain still persisted. The grass - once full of snow, now melted into chilling water - coated our shoes in mud and more freezing water. We were all shaking in our boots, quite literally. Once it was finally time to go to sleep, we all longed for warmth and escape. However, all there was to turn to was a long chain of cardboard boxes, deco-rated with a brown tarp to keep them as dry as possible. One of these conditions alone would've been enough for anyone to hop back in their car and make the drive back to their own bed. But, we're Houghton Field Hockey—we never give up. The point of this event - established nineteen years ago by Greece church Park Ridge Free Methodist - is to first, hold a coat drive and second, to empathize with the homeless by sleep-ing in cardboard boxes at the church overnight. Many of us were anxious upon arrival, but that instantly dissipated once we saw the immense amount of boxes and young participants who were eager to make the experience as rewarding as possible. The team was encouraged by the large turnout, and we instant-ly got to work. Some helped to link the boxes together while others stood watch by the coat donation box. As the sun began to sink, some of us took signs and danced along the sidewalk, attempting to catch the passing cars' attention. Once it got dark enough where our signs wouldn't possibly be visible any longer, the church's youth group leaders - whose name is "Powerhouse," and indeed they are one - began to call us together to play games. We grouped together and participated in games such as "Ninja" and "Capture the Flag" for many hours. Somewhere along the way, pizza was served and we ate it outside. Eventual-ly, our exhaustion started to get the best of us, and a few of us began to nestle into our beds for the night. One of my teammates and I became the second and third peo-ple to enter our cardboard home. Someone was already in there, and so after we'd left our wet coats and shoes in the first box, we climbed over her to travel further down the extensive box tun-nel. With nothing but a fuzzy blanket and my pillow, I settled in and felt surprisingly comfortable. I snapped a picture of my teammate, who looked joyful to be exactly where she was. That inspired me further, even as I sat there and listened to the rain pound against the tarp above our boxes. Sleep wouldn't come upon me until the rest of our team joined us, many Hellos and I'm sorrys being exclaimed as they climbed over everyone to claim their spots. Despite the cold chill of the rain that practical-ly got me down to the bone, my heart felt warm at the closeness of our team in that moment. I can promise you, there's nothing more intimate than laying like happy sardines inside a long chain of cardboard boxes in the rain. Everyone huddled togeth-er, hoping that they could keep the person next to them warm. I fell asleep with a smile on my face. The empathy for the homeless was most definitely there after we'd awakened the next morning. However, what I - and most of us - took away from that experience was the bond we'd strength-ened by persisting through the tough conditions together. It's something that I'll never forget, and I'll always hold dear to my heart.

Crossroads 1 Corinthians 5:19 (Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.) This passage that we are focusing on for January teaches us to strengthen our physical and spiritual lives for the glory of God. We are looking at the lives of three Biblical men including Jo-seph, Daniel and David. Starting at a young age, these three walked closely with God to develop strong convictions without compromising their faith. Through struggles in their lives they have stayed close to their beliefs. As our group deals with their everyday struggles in their schools, we will work with them to strengthen their faith and walk with God to shine around others who need to see a positive way to live. Following these studies, we will teach on how to really talk to God, hear God and follow God’s leading in our lives. We have a great group of passionate “characters” who have shown much wisdom in how they deal with peer pressures and sharing their faith. we look forward to further developing their faith to grow into Godly adults like Joseph, Daniel and David.

Anchored Anchored finished off the Fall semester with dinner and Bible Study, a Christmas Party and a game night. Our Bible Studies centered around the Prodigal Son, Revelation and End Times, and Gideon as we discussed how our greatest struggles often follow our biggest victories. The Party and game nights were a fun time to gather and enjoy a relaxed time of playing games and hanging out together. The Spring Semester’s SNT gatherings (Sunday Night Thing dinner & Bible Study) will begin January 20. We will continue to have a special guest each evening to share with us from the Bible. Upcoming Events: TBD

Children's Ministries Children’s Ministry has increased by three students on Wednes-day nights in 2019. Our prayer is that we continue to grow our church family. May we fulfill the call to be fishers of men, women and children. In Kids Club we are beginning the book, “The Story for Kids - Discover the Bible from Beginning to End,” by Max Lucado and Randy Frazee. This book goes from “Genesis” to “Revelation” in words the students can un-derstand. It also provides essential questions for the class to discuss. The Children’s Ministry team is meeting and will create an events planner for the 2019 Children’s Ministry Special Events. First upcoming event is February 13, and all are invited to a Kids Club Valentines Day Party. Next look for the upcoming Easter Egg Hunt and Party in April. Keep watching for all the upcoming events. We look forward to an amazing year. Watch the church’s website, Facebook page and the Life of Park Ridge hallway gallery for adorable pictures of the students during their class adventures. Weekly opportunities: Children’s Sunday School: 9:30 am Children’s Church: 10:30 am (during worship) Kids Club: Wednesday evenings 6:45 pm

New Day Preschool
New Day Christian Preschool’s Open House is January 29, 6:30-7:30 pm. This is a time for parents of perspective students to visit the classroom, meet the teachers, and see what sets New Day apart from other preschools. If you know parents of 3-or 4-year-olds, please encourage them to attend this free event. One of our annual events is the Christmas Family Night. This year it was held December 6. The 3-year-old class opened the program by parading up and down the aisles, ringing bells, while singing “Jingle Bells.” The ten classmates, tinsel halos atop their heads, sang “Ten Little Angels.” Dressed in their finest, they ended their part of the program with an excited “Happy Birthday, Jesus” and a rousing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Twins Evelyn and Wyatt Skirment made their debut as Mary and Joseph. Annabelle Abram made a very convincing angel Gabriel and Kelvin Lehning played the inn-keeper. Other classmates played angels, shepherds and wise men. The young thespians added music to the performance, singing enthusiastically. They sang old favorites, such as “Away in a Manger” and “All Night, All Day” and newer songs “Three Wise Men” and “Hush.” Another thing that sets New Day apart is our weekly Science Days. The children, all wearing their lab coats, explore how the natural world works. During a lesson on air pressure, they in-flated a balloon inside a bottle. They have also made volcanoes and mixed colors. Baking adds a chance to practice math and science with yummy results. In January, the children baked rectangular granola bars to go with the shape of the week. Kindergarten readiness activities include learning to write their names, the letters of the alphabet, numbers, and shapes. Weekly gym time adds enrichment with large muscle activities like tumbling on the mats, jumping on the trampoline, and rid-ing scooters. A favorite of the young athletes is playing basket-ball. The preschoolers are looking forward to Valentine’s Day par-ties. This is a fun time to talk about how God loves us and we love others.
