A Note from our Director of Nursing,
Stephanie Hicks:
Happy summer everyone! Let’s enjoy the sun-
shine and remember to be safe when outdoors.
Heat related illness happens when the body
can’t cool itself quickly enough. Our age, obesi-
ty, heart disease, poor circulation, certain pre-
scription medications, and alcohol use all affect our bodies’ ability to
regulate body temperature. Some tips to beat the summer heat in-
clude: wear loose fitting clothing, light colored clothing, and wear a
hat. Stay in the shade when possible, use a sunscreen SPF 30 or
greater, and drink fluids such as water or sports drinks. Be careful to
limit alcohol and caffeine since they can cause dehydration.
We have an Assisted Living Family night scheduled on Thursday, Ju-
ly 19th at 5pm. Please contact Woodlands and RSVP to Debbie An-
nett. We are looking forward to seeing you there!
Our podiatrist, Dr. Wilhelm, from 360 Care will be back for a visit to
Assisted Living on July 13th. Just a reminder, if consent forms have
not been signed ahead of time, they will not be able to see you.
Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions. We are very
pleased to offer these services to our residents. As well, I am current-
ly working on setting up the audiology services for the near future.
We had our annual CNA week cele-
bration in June. The week started off
with cupcakes and goodies were
shared throughout the week. They
were provided with an amazing Mexi-
can buffet luncheon from Ron, Bret,
Debbie & our dietary team. It was
amazing! Those brownies were
soooo good! The CNAs were all giv-
en gift bags full of goodies, treats, and a gift card. We followed up
with a fun game of “The Amazing Race”. They started off with a clue
and had to figure out where that led them to the next one. After 6
clues, which took them all over the building, they wound up in the
D.O.N. office and had to present some techniques for Dementia Care
to win the game. The winners received a $50 Visa gift card! We love
our nursing team and we know that the nursing assistants are a huge
part of the heart of our nursing department.
We want to wish you a very happy summer. As always, feel free to
call or email anytime.
Thank you– Steph

Aubrey and Mary Margaret King
When a retirement facility was agreed to be the next life changing decision to be made, Mary Margaret and Aubrey King began researching and visiting potential residences from Pennsylvania to South Carolina. Woodlands Community became the outstanding choice, even without considering the incentive to move to their “hometown”.
Aubrey King graduated Marshall University in 1963. Mary Margaret was formally educated entirely at Marshall University, from lab school through graduate school. In addition, MU is where Aubrey and Mary Margaret met on a blind date. They married in 1966.
Following graduation Aubrey traveled to India, having been awarded a Rotary International Scholarship. He returned to the USA in 1964, enrolled at Johns Hopkins University and earned a Master’s Degree in Political Science. Following graduation he taught at The University of Maryland for five years.
Mary Margaret began her elementary school teaching career at this time, a career which was interrupted when the Kings became parents. She resumed her teaching career when the children started school, teaching grades three through eight and serving as administrator at a private school in Maryland.
Their son Christopher and his wife Shannon live in Charlotte, N.C., with son Camden and daughter Caroline. Daughter Catharine and husband Jordan live in Asheville, N.C., with son Jackson.
Aubrey’s lifelong interest in politics drew him to become a Washington D.C. lobbyist. For eighteen years he was employed by two trade associations. He later became an independent lobbyist for seventeen years, representing federal land issues, parks, forests, tourism, transportation, etc.
The Kings are ardent Marshall supporters and have kept closely in touch with the University. They maintain season tickets to Marshall events and are Thundering Herd fans, of course. The couple are inveterate travelers, enjoy reading, family visits, and social and entertainment events. Woodlands community is pleased to welcome this very amicable couple. They are an asset to the community and deserve the “royal welcome” they have received from all who have met them. Introduce yourself and have the pleasure of getting to know them.

MARSHALL MONDAY–
Monday, July 2, 2018
6pm, Hampton Room
Dr. Lori Ellison, professor and chair of the Counseling Department within Marshall University’s
College of Education and Professional Development, will speak about the Master of Arts in
Counseling program.
Dr. Ellison received her Ph. D. from Texas A&M University-Commerce. She has taught five courses
in her nearly ten years at Marshall.
We hope you can join us to learn about Marshall University’s Counseling Department!
WOODLANDS’ LIBRARY NEWS
We are putting together a small, large print book
library that will be located in the foyer on the second
floor between the original and the “new” sections of
Healthcare. This is to make books more accessible to
those living in Assisted Living, but is open for all
residents to use. The books are ordered and hopefully the
library will be up and running in July.
We would like to thank David Owens, from the
Cabell County Public Library for his assistance in this
endeavor.
If you have any large print books you would like to contribute, please give
them to the Activities Director, Molly. A notebook will be available for suggestions
of books or authors you might like for us to order to add to the library.
Thank you very much and I hope you enjoy it!
Technology Corner
Hello everyone:
I will be holding another 3D Printing demonstration/workshop on Monday,
July 30th at 2PM in the HealthCare Activity room. This demonstration is open to all residents
(Independent & Assisted Living). I will have several projects that I’ve printed and both of my
printers up and running during the demonstration. I hope to see you there as I have many more
cool projects to show you.
The Technology committee meetings will be postponed until the Fall.
If you’ve recently moved in, & do not have a pass for your vehicle, please see reception to fill out
a parking pass form. Please call reception to place a work order if you do not have pull cords
installed in your bedrooms.
*****SCAM ALERT*****
There is a SCAM hitting us at Woodlands. Some of you may receive a letter informing you that
you have been chosen to be a Wal-Mart “secret shopper”. Please do not respond to this letter.
The SCAM attempts to get you to buy Wal-Mart gift cards & give the access codes to the scam-
mers. You will not be reimbursed for the cost of the cards. If you have any questions, feel free to
contact me.
Thanks,
Rick

Hospice of Huntington Tribute
Woodlands had the honor of hosting Hospice of Huntington’s
tribute to Laura Darby, Woodlands’ resident & founder of Hospice
of Huntington.
While enrolled in nursing school, Laura became aware of the
concept and need for hospice care. Upon graduating, and with the
help of initial staff and volunteers, she laid the foundation for the
organization that has provided care for over 22,000 patients in our
community to date. We are so proud to have a legacy like Laura
Darby call our Woodlands community home!
A NOTE FROM THE FOOD COMMITTEE...
The Food Committee wants your input. We want to know your favorite foods. There will be a box on the hearth beside the check in station for the dining room for you to vote on your favorite menu item. We will vote on a differ-ent one each month. The first one will be your favorite beef entrée. Just write what it is and place the paper in the box. Next month we will let you know the outcome in the Newsletter, and it will be marked on the menu as a Residents' Favorite. We will vote on another menu item each month. The Food Committee would also like for you to submit a favorite recipe that the kitchen will pre-pare. The recipe will be chosen from all the ones submitted for the month by Ron and Bret. Keep in mind the recipe may have to be modified for larger pro-duction, but the kitchen will stay as true to the recipe as possible. The Apple Dapple Cake recipe was submitted by Norma Denning and the Kentucky Butter Cake recipe by Ann Cruise. Both are very popular desserts. So look through your recipes and submit one (or more) of your tasty delights. You may give the recipe to the employee at the check in station. We are looking forward to know-ing what your favorite menu items are and trying one of your best, loved dishes. Till we eat again!

Find the Door – past pool table /chess board (so many contests!), past Wellness, past IT & Activi-
ties… there: you are out!
Here, up high in greenness, appreciate a songster’s (not a mocker’s!) trills. So many joyous tunes –
surely, Mr. Songster, she will come to you. Then, zagging down & down: awesome acrobatic aerial-
ists. Drifting down & further down – all the way down: imperious brown, black & white marchers –
inspecting their domain (are we invaders? Did we filch some salad bar crackers as tribute?).
Now we see circles of illusion, ethereal, wavering, sparkling. Now we hear a meditators never-
ending, depth-discovering drone. More detached, supple, cleansed. More, Oh More …. OM
(He who knows he has enough, is rich)
(I had thought I glimpsed a mysterious creature hidden in the high pond. Then the rational explana-
tion: grass carp. But no! – I was right the first time: it is mysterious, and the geese are mysterious,
and so are we also.)
Stillness … harmony ... disappearing confusion: why over-sharpen the blade if the edge will become
blunt all the sooner?
Surrounding shadowy woodlands offer only a scintilla of a hint of dark forests primeval … but how-
ever slight, we need that hint. (Nature not quite yet denatured)
Back through the Door, up for coffee & pastries. It says “It’s a Great Day at the Woodlands” --
Perhaps so -- how do I know?
Because of this! -John Palmer
A Note from the Social Worker:
According to CMS (Center for Medicare &
Medicare Services), Medicare cards are being mailed
to West Virginia Residents starting May 2018. It is
imperative that we have the correct card. For our
Assisted Living Residents, the card is necessary for us
to give to providers who provide any services that are covered under Medicare. Billing may be
effected if we do not have the correct card. Please bring the card or drop off a copy of the card to
Charlene in Medical Records. I will also gladly assist with the cards. You may also send a copy by
mail or email. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me @ (304)-697-1620 Ext.
120 or email at [email protected]. -Jane Bester, Woodlands Social Worker
