Annual Hugh Bosma Legacy Award Announced, Zak Cohen-N6PK

The CVARC Board of Directors announces Zak Cohen-N6PK as the

recipient of the annual Hugh Bosma Legacy Award. Zak’s contri-

butions to the club are well known and have not gone unrecog-

nized in the areas of training and education, emergency commu-

nications, and participation in club and community events.

Hugh Bosma (SK) was a club member whose unselfish contribu-

tions to the club in the form of help and encouragement have

led to the annual award in his name and honor.

Zak-N6PK and Adrian-K6KY

Nominations for the award were evaluated and voted on by the BOD. Any club member who has shown extra ordinary

contributions to the club and community as a mentor, supporter, and contributor was considered for this prestigious

award. The annual plaque is on display at each club meeting.

Last year’s recipient, Adrian-K6KY, presented Zak with the plaque at the Holiday Party. Congratulations Zak!

The November CVARC meeting began with at least half a

dozen club members joining the guest speaker, Mark Weiss

-K6FG, at the Dugout Sport Grill in Simi Valley. From there,

everyone redirected themselves to the East County Sher-

iff’s Station Community Room to join other club members

for the regular meeting which began at 7:30 pm.

After the Pledge of Allegiance, President Andy-K6AGL

thanked Eric-WB6PYK for organizing and directing the

building of the battery box project. About 20 members

participated in the building project. Eric says he has some

left over ammo cans of the smaller size that are available

for purchase.

Andy said he would like to conduct at least two projects in

2017 and wants to form a Project Committee for that pur-

pose. Anyone interested should contact him.

Zak-N6PK is continuing his training sessions and is offering

instruction in Packet and FLDigi. Those interested should

talk to him and decide on a date and time. Zak is often

able to schedule the ECSS Community Room for training. Mark-K6FG and Andy-K6AGL

Rob-W6RH reminded everyone that the Amateur Radio Parity Act is at critical point in its progress through Congress.

Everyone is asked to follow this link to generate letters to our California US Senators urging passage of the bill. A note

has also been added to the CVARC Yahoo Discussion Group.

The final notice about the Holiday Party on December 1 was announced. Tickets for the dinner and the grand prize

were available. The Holiday Party takes the place of the regular club meeting and Board of Directors meeting s in De-

cember.

Final nominations were asked for the 2017 Board of Directors election. The slate was presented and the vote was

taken. New and returning members of the CVARC Board were elected.

Then Mark Weiss-K6FG was introduced

and spoke about operating his home

based radio remotely through the inter-

net.

Mark talked about using his laptop com-

puter anywhere in the word to control

his station and antenna.

He said that basically he has to hack into

his own equipment and that is one of

the main problems. To use his remote

computer he had to overcome the fire-

wall protections that were trying to keep

him out.

Mark recommends using the latest soft-

ware that is supported by the vendors.

Mark is available to talk about his remote Mark-K6FG Describes his Remote Station

operations at [email protected] .

The meeting concluded with the raffle and refreshments, coffee by Eric-WB6PYK and cookies by Joe-AI6MW.

Holiday Party—Wrap Up … Another very successful Holiday Party for CVARC was

held at the Best Western Posada Royale located on

Madera Road near Tierra Rejada Road in Simi Valley.

The hotel provided a nice room with a fireplace that

was set up with lots of tables, food service areas,

beverages, and a carving station.

More than 50 CVARC members and guests arrived

around 6 pm and mixed and mingled with one an-

other with the expectation of a nice meal and good

holiday cheer. In addition to the visiting and dinner,

anticipation was growing as everyone knew the

grand prize drawing and secondary raffle drawing

would soon be held.

Club Members and Guests Mingle

A nice assortment of appetizers were circulated

and then President Andy-K6AGL directed every-

one to the serving lines for dinner. Plates were

piled high with the choices everyone made

from the varied selections provided. In fact,

some had to return again just to make sure it

was as good the second time as it was the first.

As dinner was finishing, Andy-K6AGL drew everyone’s attention to the

special announcement regarding the recipient of this year’s Hugh

Bosma Legacy Award. Zak-N6PK was awarded the annual plaque by

last year’s recipient, Adrian-K6KY.

Zak was recognized by the club and Board of Directors for his extra

ordinary contributions to the club and community this year.

A round of applause was offered to Zak who graciously accepted the

award.

Soon thereafter, Andy asked Ben-KK6FUT to assist him in drawing the

raffle prizes. The raffle ticket for the dual band Yaesu FT-7900R was

drawn from all the monthly raffle tickets at the regular club meetings.

The winner was Dean-K6DIN.

And then it was time for the grand prize raffle, the complete solar

power station from Bioenno Power. These tickets came from the sale

of tickets for just this special prize.

Zak-N6PK Accepts the Hugh Bosma Award

With a low drum roll, the winning ticket was drawn. The

tension in the room could be measured with a galva-

nometer. The winner was Charlie-KG6CLT.

Andy-K6AGL and Ben-KK6FUT Draw the Raffles

The party did not stop. Holiday greetings continued to be given. And very

much like a regular club meeting, everyone engaged in conversations from

one end of the room to the other. And also very much like a club meeting, it

was a struggle to call an end to the very enjoyable evening.

Passing the Newsletter Torch

My time is up as your QUA CVARC newsletter editor. I move to another Board position as the Education Coordinator

and expect to work with many of you in the next year as we have in the past.

This year has been remarkable for CVARC and notable in many ways. As far as the newsletter is concerned, this year we

saw publication move from paper, digital, mail and email, to all digital and all published on the internet through the

club website. This change forward has saved the club money and also given the newsletter very wide distribution to

club members and anyone interested in seeing what CVARC is doing.

Please welcome and support your new Editor/Publisher, Stu Forman-KK6VYS. Anything for future newsletters should be

sent to him and coordinated with him. Stu-KK6VYS, [email protected] .

Thank you for your help and collaboration during my time with you.

Regards,
