INTRODUCTIONTheCanadianSocietyofHospitalPharmacists (CSHP) representspharmacyprofessionalsworking inhospitals andothercollaborative healthcare settings who seek excellence in patient care through the advancement of safe and effectivemedicationuse.Anot-for-profitorganization,CSHPoffers its over3,000pharmacist andpharmacy technicianmembersa nationalvoice through advocacy, education, information sharing, promotionof best practices, conferences, facilitationofresearch,andrecognitionofexcellence.TheSocietypublishestheCanadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy,conductstheHospitalPharmacyinCanadaSurvey,andaccreditspharmacyresidencyprogramsacrossCanada.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTA new path for CSHP 2018-2019This year, a theme of change prevailed throughout the Society on multiple levels. At theseniormanagementtier,MyrellaRoyannouncedherretirementaftermorethan15yearsasa dedicated and passionate ExecutiveDirector.Workingwithmany presidents and boardsovertheyears,Myrella’s tenure isassociatedwithseveralCSHPsuccessstories.While it isimpossible to list all her achievements, the following highlights underscore the impact shemadeonboththeSocietyandthepharmacypractice.
Myrella’s leadership turned the Society around when it was needed the most. Duringchallenging economic times, shewas able to increasemembership by 50%.Through heradvocacy initiatives,CSHPraised itsprofileandreputationasanationalvoiceofhospitalpharmacybyrespondingtovariousconsultationssolicitedbyourgovernmentstakeholders.Intime,numerousadvocacyinitiativeshelpedpromotetheroleofthehospitalpharmacistsandadvancethepracticeinCanada.
Becauseofhermanyaccomplishments,itisnotsurprisingthatMyrellawonmultipleawards,includingCSHP’sDistinguishedServiceAwardandtheLifetimeAchievementAwardfromtheCanadianFoundationforPharmacy.
OnbehalfofCSHP,andalltheBoardmembers,volunteers,andmembersthathavecometoknowMyrella,Iwouldliketothankherforthelast15years,andoffersincerebestwishesforawell-deservedretirement.
Myrella’sretirementbroughtaboutaneedforanewleadertostrategicallyrespondtotrendsaffectingtheassociationworldat large,suchasthegrowthofnicheassociations,andmorecompetition formembership and sponsorship dollars. These businessmodels underwhichCSHPhadflourishedwerenolongerenoughtodeliverthevaluemembersexpectanddeserve.InDecember2018,CSHPannouncedtheappointmentofJodyCiufoasourChiefExecutiveOfficer. IampleasedtoreportJodyhasmanagedtheresponsibilityofhandlingtheshiftingassociation landscape with steady leadership, honed over her lengthy career in not-for-profitdirection.TheBoardhasgivenhera clearmandate toelevate theprofileofhospitalpharmacists, growmembership, engage thehospital pharmacycommunity, andamplify theSociety’scollectivevoice.
Tothatend,sheandtheExecutiveCommitteeworkedextensivelywiththeBoard,BranchPresidents,andaffiliatedboardstocreateastrategytoregainsustainability. Inashowofunanimoussupport,theCSHPNationaloffice,ourbranchesandaffiliatedboardsagreedtocontributefinanciallytowardsthecommongoalofbecomingmoremember-driven,offeringmoreprograms,services,educationalopportunities,andrelevancetotoday’sgenerationofmembers,supporters,andstudents.Jody’sleadershipmarksnewbeginningsfortheSocietyaswesetonanewpathtowardssustainabilityandasour2015-2020StrategicPlancomestoitsnaturalend.Theplanningphasefor2020andbeyondiswellunderway,andasaunifiedcommunitytheSocietyispoisedforgrowthinthecomingdecade.

InmyfirstmonthsasCSHP’sCEO,IamgratefulforthewarmwelcomeIhavereceivedfrommembers,ourBoardofDirectorsandBranchesacrossthecountry,andfromourstaffteaminOttawa.This is especially important tome as a newcomer to both pharmacy and thehealthcaresector.Drugshortages,Pharmacare,excellenceinpractice,theopioidcrisis,andotherissuesattheheartofpatientcareareallresponsestosomeofthesocialchallengesI’veworkedonthroughoutmycareerinnationalnot-for-profitassociations.Gettingtoworkalongside pharmacy professionals whose primary concern is caring for the wellbeing ofCanadians,especiallyforthefrailandvulnerableamongus,isanongoinginspirationeverydayinthisposition.
Iamalreadywitnesstothecommitmenttosystemicchangeacrossthecountry,asCSHPnational, branches, and affiliated boards developed consensus developed around theStrategyTowardsSustainability.Thestrategywill involvealargeinvestmentinhumanandtechnological infrastructure to allow us to deliver greater member value. We’ll see theadditionofanewMarketingandCommunicationsDepartmenttoconnectourcommunitymore closely, anda largerpharmacypractice team todevelopmoreprofessionalpracticeprogramsandservices. TheStrategyTowardsSustainabilityisourcommunity’ssharedpromisetoensurepharmacypractice is always evolving into something better. I encourage you to get to know ourpassionatecommunity,byreadingaboutouradvocacy initiatives,ournationalevents,ourmembershipprograms,affiliatedboards,theCSHPFoundationand,ofcourse,awardsandfellowsprogram.IamsoveryhonouredtobepartofthisandIlookforwardtothecontinuedinspirationfromtheleadershipandexpertiseofourvolunteersandstaff.

Strategic Alliance between CSHP and APESAnewstrategicalliancebetweenCSHPandtheAssociation des pharmaciens des établissements de santé du Québec (APES) enhancedtherelationshipbetweenthetwoorganizationsandincreasedrespectivememberbenefits.AsofDecember2018,CSHPmemberswereabletoaccessthesamebenefitsasAPESassociatemembers.Similarly,thisnewagreementallowsCSHPtoofferinterestedAPESactivemembersthesamerightsandbenefitsgrantedtoitsindividualsupportersatnoadditionalcost.Nearly120APESmembershavelinkedupwithCSHPasaresult.Theallianceisalsoanidealbackdropforco-operationonadvocacyissuesthataffectbothorganizations.

PlenarysessionsImproving Health through Community Design given by Karen Lee,MD,MHSc,University ofAlberta andPartnering with Patients to Optimize Pharmaceutical Care presentedbyMarie-ClaudeVanier,BPharm,MScUniversityofMontrealwereakeydrawtotheconference.Inaddition,theeducationalprogramhighlightedCSHP’saward-winningpresentations,facilitatedposterpresentations,andPharmacySpecialtyNetwork(PSN)roundtablediscussions.Therewerealsoprogramhighlightstouchingonopioidsinprimarycareandvarioussessionsdiscussingcannabis-relatedtopics.During the conference, CSHP paid homage to retiringExecutiveDirector,MyrellaRoy,forher15yearsofservice,with16pastpresidentsofCSHPinattendanceatthisspecialretirementsendoff.

CSHP ADVOCACYCSHP works collaboratively with many stakeholders inthe healthcare sector to leverage one another’s expertise,connections, and advocacy success stories. CSHP wouldlike to thank its many stakeholderswho helped cover theadvocacy agenda through high-levelmeetings, think tanks,events,andparticipationincommittees.
CSHPcontinuestoenjoyastrongrelationshipwithHealth Canada. Throughout the year, CSHP was representedin Health Canada meetings on mandatory reporting ofserious adverse drug reactions, fraudulent marketing ofpharmaceuticals,andcommercialcompounding.
Formanyyears,CSHPhasactivelycontributedtothefederaldiscussiononanationalPharmacareprogramandinMarch2018 responded to an invitation from theAdvisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare toparticipatein a series of cross-Canada roundtables. The CSHP BoardvotedtoendorsetheStatement of Pharmacare Consensus Principles. In doing so, CSHP joins more than 80 otherorganizationsrepresentingadiversecollectionofhealthcareprofessionalassociations,not-for-profitorganizations,labourunions,patients,seniors,andacademics.
The Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare presented its interim report. Many of therecommendations and the principles align with CSHP’sposition statementonanationalPharmacareprogram.
CSHPcontinues toworkwith theAlliance for Safe Online Pharmacies Canada (ASOP) regarding the potentialchanges in US legislative framework that would allow formass importation of drugs from Canada. In the spring of2019CSHPparticipated ina trilateralmeetingwithHealthCanadaandtheCanadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) to discuss various issues, such as latex content in drugs,biologicsnamingconventions,andmore.
CSHPcollaboratedwithPrescribing Safely Canada (PSC)-Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, tocontribute towards the publication of the Prescribing Safely Canada – Physician Prescribing Competencies.The CanMEDS 2015 framework and Milestones Guideare used throughout this document for each of the tencompetenciesdescribed.
CSHP is represented on the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP) Board ofDirectors.Thisyear,theCCAPPBoardmadeaccreditationdecisionsforfiveCanadianpharmacytechnicianprogramsand one Canadian pharmacy program. Four accreditationsite visits for Canadian pharmacy programs and sixaccreditationsitevisitsareplannedforCanadianpharmacytechnicianprogramsin2019/2020.TheCCAPPBoardwillbeengaginginaprocessoverthenextyeartore-evaluatethefeesforbotheducationalaccreditationandmembershipto sustain growth, permit innovation, and implementnewstrategicactions.
CSHPbenefittedfromitsfirstrepresentative,TashaRamsey,NS to Immunize Canada National Coalition. The group’smandate is to contribute to the control, elimination, anderadication of vaccine-preventable diseases in Canada byincreasingawarenessof theNationalAdvisoryCommitteeon Immunization’s (NACI) recommended immunizationsfor all ages through education, promotion, advocacy, andmedia relations. Plans are underway to bolster this areafor CSHP members and networks by sharing ImmunizeCanada campaigns (influenza, pneumococcus), obtainingordevelopingimmunization-relatededucationalresources,andcreatingpositionstatementsaddressingcurrentissuesinimmunization.
CSHP Cannabis Task Force—withthechangeinCanada’slegislationgoverningcannabis coming intoeffectOctoberof2018,CSHPheardfromitsmembersthatthereisaneedforsupportandguidanceinmanagingtheclinicalneedsofpatients who may use cannabis for medical purposes, aswellasonhandlingcannabisproductsbroughttohospitalby patients. At their Midterm Board Meeting, the BoardvotedtostrikeaCannabisTaskForcetoreviewandaddresstheseissues.

TheCJHPhasfeaturedseveraldistinctiveseriesovertheyears,suchasInternationalPerspectivesonPharmacyPracticefrom2015–2018andResearchPrimerfrom2014–2015.TheseuniquefeaturesalignwiththeJournals’strategicgoalofbeingrecognizedasarespectedinternationalpublication,serving as amajorvenue for disseminationof information related topatient-centeredpharmacypractice.Basedontheresultsofa2017CJHPreadershipsurvey,themostrecentseries,theAdvancedPharmacistPractitioner(APP),wasselectedtorunforthenext2to3years.TheintentofthisnewfeatureistoprovideacollectionofresourcesaimedatenablinghospitalpharmacistsandpharmacydepartmentstoadvanceandbroadenthescopeofpharmacypracticeacrossCanada.TheAPPserieswaslaunchedintheJanuary-February2018issueoftheCJHPwhenthefirstmanuscript,areviewofadvancedpracticeconceptswrittenbyStephenShalansky,EditoroftheCJHP,waspublished.
