PARTS OF A BRA It’s important to familiarize yourself with the 6 main parts of a bra – after all, you wear one!
1. The cups - made up of the upper cup and the lower cup 2. The band - a combination of the front frame and the band. The band goes around the body and holds the cups to the
body. The band provides the support in a bra. 3. The straps are made up of the front strap and the back strap. The front strap can be made of fabric, strap tape or
elastic. The back strap is made of elastic with sliders and rings for adjustability.
MATERIALS Once you determine your pattern size, considering fabrics and other supplies to sew it up is the next step. cup fabrics The fabrics chosen for the cups will affect support, fit, and comfort. Choose wisely. It is recommended to use a low-stretch or no-stretch fabric for the first bra and venture into stretchy fabrics only after the fit in the basic fabrics are perfected. Examples of some good cup fabrics are: • duoplex – a stable low-stretch polyester fabric, easy to work with • simplex – nylon or polyester fabric, a little slippery but still easy to work with • cotton single knit – 2 layers of this fabric are recommended as it is very light • nylon jersey knits, such as Antron, – with low stretch, 2 layers are better Duoplex Simplex Cotton jersey Antron jersey band fabrics

Finding shells on the beach is an addictive pastime if you have walked along an ocean shore with the water lap-ping over your feet. For accomplished rug hooker, Sheila
Mitchell, shells were the inspiration for this project. Originally designed for friends who are building a summer home by the sea, Sheila decided the shells speak of summer afternoons at the beach and sun filled days hooking a gift for friends.
A natural artist, Sheila draws her designs from nature in a real-istic style. She dyes her own wool for her projects and she likes to experiment with texture. “I like small projects that allow me to explore new ideas and try new colour combinations or learn a new technique,” she says.
An avid birder, Sheila’s first designs were inspired by the birds she saw in her backyard. “One of my first major projects had birds in it,” she explains. “It seemed like a natural progression to combine birds, realism, rug hooking and wool.”
Sheila loves detail, which is a hallmark of the realistic style. She used to do tailoring because she loved to work with fabric and the detail that was required. Originally from Medicine Hat, Alberta, she was introduced to rug hooking when she visited her new in-laws on the east coast, but put off learning the craft until her twin sons were teenagers. She has been a dedicated rug hooker since that milestone occurred.
To challenge herself further, Sheila went to Eugene, Oregon, to train to be a McGown teacher. She was surprised when she discovered she loves to teach and has even been asked to teach at the same Oregon workshop. Her peers have bestowed awards on her work and she has had pieces featured in magazines.
“Many of my ideas come from my west coast home and my colour schemes often reflect my prairie roots,” Sheila ad-mits. “I make a lot of tea cozies to try out ideas and colour combinations.” z
