the road to independence, Productivity and inclusion

When Darlene Kay Segler was born 58

years ago, life held little hope for an infant

diagnosed with Down Syndrome. But

Merle Segler fell in love with her sweet baby

daughter and nurtured and protected her

throughout what has been an unexpectedly

long life. “They told me at her birth that I

would not have her for long,” her mom says.

In honor of her beloved daughter and in

gratitude for the place Darlene has called

home since 2005, Merle and her son, Hanes

Segler, donated a host of furnishings and

equipment for the new outdoor Pavilion to

enhance life for MRM residents. The gift

includes an outdoor theater with screen,

projector and speakers, along with picnic

tables, benches, swings, barbecue grills …

and fans to keep the movie-watchers cool

on warm summer evenings.

The new Darlene Kay Segler Pavilion is a

joyful addition to campus life and Merle is

delighted to see her gift being used by MRM

residents. “I’m into my 94th year now and

had planned to give a gift in my will, but

realized that if I leave money after I’m dead,

I can’t see what happens! I want to see people

enjoy things.”

Darlene is a resident of Covenant Home,

where she is doing well, finds happiness

with her Covenant family and gets to spend

Sundays with her mom. “I had to work when

she was growing up, so I put her in

state schools and always

spent weekends with her.

If my job required me to

move, I moved Darlene to

a nearby school to keep her

as close as I could. She has

been really happy at MRM

and I wanted to show my

appreciation,” she says. Merle

did bookkeeping/accounting

work and is retired now from

a job that involved travel. She

says there’s a Johnny Cash song

that describes her life: “I’ve been

everywhere, man …”

You can see Merle’s lively spirit

in her daughter. “She has a great

sense of humor,” her mom says.

“Even though she can’t talk, she understands

everything you say to her; she jabbers, looks

right at you and I know she knows what she’s

saying and she thinks you understand every

word. She gets across what she wants and she

is a happy girl.” (continued on page 12)347 Total Mission Road Ministries employees

Within a few years, Mission Road’s campus will be forested, shady and inviting for our residents, thanks to a very green gift. The City of San Antonio donated 25 trees to excited residents, who watched (and helped) in the planting — thanks to Davey Tree and the San Antonio Arborist Association.

What fun! What a delightful enhancement to our campus that will last for many years! We are blessed and our residents are eagerly watching every day as the trees grow taller and leafier.

Bring Joy to Residents

This Mission Road camper shoots a bow and arrow for the first time with the help of a counselor at

Camp Aranzazu in Rockport, Texas. For the fourth summer, Camp Aranzazu welcomed the Mission

Road kiddos for one week to experience many “firsts” such as: zip-lining, wall climbing, fishing, nature

walks and much more! Thank you to our generous community supporters including HEB Tournament

of Champions who provided the resources allowing all of the Mission Road children to attend camp

and to Help A Kid SOAR throughout the entire year!

A Mother’s...(continued from cover)

Merle’s generosity is also bringing entertainment

to the residents of Covenant Home, whom she

affectionately calls, “My girls.” She says, “Darlene

gave them a new flat screen TV — a big screen so

they can gather ‘round and watch movies together.

Each of the girls came by and thanked me.”

This benefactor loves seeing the joy her gifts bring.

And MRM loves Merle, a longtime friend and

supporter who, along with her daughter, will long be

remembered … especially on the many fun and festive

events now and into the future at the Darlene Kay

Segler Pavilion.
