Wow! What a month! We had seven great singers join the Heralds and they, along with other new and returning members, brought excellent singing and have energized the total Chorus. I coined the name for this as chorus ‘buzz’ and our ‘buzz’ is ramping higher and higher. Thank you to our new members for becoming Heralds and if you need any help, we have members that are here to help you.

The energy at our rehearsals increases with each meeting. Once we get through these summer ‘vacation’ months and get all our guys back on the risers, I can only imagine what that will be like. Driving that energy into the combined chorus with our friends from Jacksonville, I am sure we can enjoy an improved result at Fall contest.

In the build-up to that contest, I am asking the Membership and Music Teams to prepare for a huge guest night on the following Monday, October 13th. I would like this meeting to be the largest ever. Let’s shoot for 50 singing guests for that night.

It is time to begin the show plan of activities to have successful Christmas Shows. It is critical that we use revenue from our ticket and program advertisement sales to close the severe budget gap that we now have. It will take the involvement of all our members to make this happen. We have to strive for a sell-out of both shows.

Two financial support programs are in the works – the Hillsborough County Grant and the “Friends of the Heralds.” Our grant was finalized August 8th and submitted. Our “FOH” Program will begin by the end of the month. Both are very important to our financial health.

It is the time of the year for our Nominating Committee to begin their important work in assembling the slate for the 2015 Board of

Directors election. It is a defined process that ends in October and our committee chairman will be asking for your input. More on that process will be announced in future rehearsals.

This past month, Tony announced the annual show date of Saturday, May 9, 2015, and the talent for those shows. We have an exciting addition by having another show the next day, Sunday, May 10, 2015, at the Palladium Theater in St. Petersburg that will have the same talent. I hope everyone is excited about having “Vocal Spectrum” along with “Main Street” on all three shows.

The new Board will have a planning session in October sometime after the election which will be completed by the 15th. The following are events that are being planned for 2015.

Hangin’ Around the Barber Pole! by Steve Cragg, Lead

Hey Heralds!

It is time for another fun-filled episode of “Hangin’ Around the Barber Pole!” The Heralds have recently become a much better chorus thanks to the addition of that dashingly good-lookin’ man, Drew Kirkman! former Tenor and merchandise salesman of International Gold Medal Quartet, “Michigan Jake.” Drew is now graciously sharing his talents with the harmonic Heralds!

Name: Drew Kirkman    Age: 44

Home State:  Indiana

Part(s) Sung: ”Lead and Tenor — Bass wannabe like all Leads and Tenors.”

How many years of Barbershop experience do you have? 23

Favorite Polecat? “Shine on Me”

What other choruses or quartets have you sung with in the past?

‘“Banks of the Wabash Chorus” — Terre Haute, IN., and “Michigan Jake,” — 2001 International Quartet Champs.’”

1. Drew, in all of your years of traveling around the globe, what’s the most unusual conversation you’ve ever had? “Honestly, probably this one where you asked me to be interviewed. I whined and stomped my feet like a baby, then finally gave in but only after you reminded me about seven times because of some deadline from your editor. Whatever, I paid my dues. Leave me alone so I can sing flat with a poor vowel target and mechanism.”

2. If you had to drive from Florida to California, in a leisurely manner, with no time limits (imagine that), and had to pick one celebrity to join you on the trip, who would it be and why? “Probably Frank Sinatra … I mean, unless I could bring three celebrities and teach and sing tags the entire trip, then I’d rather just bring a dead guy and listen to ‘Easternaires’ or ‘139th Street’ recordings the whole way. And, well, Frank, cause he’s Frank!”

3. If you were ruler of your own country what would you call it, and why? “Seems obvious to those that know me, but I’d go with Kylandia because it’d be a land filled with cute, blonde, singing, nine-year old gymnasts that eat turkey bologna and love hair ties.”

4. What’s your favorite farmyard animal? Discuss: “I suppose the cow. It provides milk to the poor children of the world, it has the coolest sound of any animal and I have at least 30 pounds of me dedicated only to filet mignon.”

5. Growing up, what was your favorite Saturday morning cartoon? Tell us why! “The Smurfs. It was because of the way they talked. They used the word ‘smurf’ for everything. For example, the phrase ‘the smurf that smurfs smurf’ really means ‘the dragon that breathes fire.’ See you next Monday when we smurf on the smurf with our fellow smurfs!”

No More “Solo” Recordingsby Chuck Steiner, BassVP Music and Performance

When submitting an upload/recording, please use ONLY the full mix learning track audible in your recording. You don’t even have to “mute” your part.

There are many, many reasons for this; here are the two biggest ones:

1) We sing in a four-part chorus, and it does neither you nor your listener any favors by not being able to compare your notes, rhythms, breathing, and blend with the other parts (including your own), as the full mix best simulates a riser recording.

2) Singing with the full mix removes any semblance of doubt that one isn’t listening to their part-predominant track in their ear and singing along to it. It simply puts everyone above reproach by singing with the full mix.

As always, you may request a one-on-one adjudication with your section leader, and if you feel comfortable singing it solo at that time, you may certainly do so.

Additional Qualification deadline: 9/22/14

QUALIFYINGSeasons Greetings! by Chuck Steiner, BassVP Music and Performance

Behold, I bring you tidings of great joy... (Cue: Incoherent murmuring and under the breath grumbling).

As we move through Summer and on into Fall, it’s time to start prepping for our Christmas Shows. This year (and going forward) will be slightly different as far as qualifying; we will start a rolling cycle of RE-qualifying on some our Christmas music each year.

Individual song statuses have been reset to reflect the requirements listed below.

You’ll see these as “not started” on your song status page.

ALL MEMBERS, new and old, will need to qualify and re-qualify on these six songs by November 13th.

“Caroling, Caroling”“Jingle Bells 2012”“Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town”“O Come, O Come Emmanuel”“Little Drummer Boy”“Birthday of a King”

New members will need to qualify on all of the six songs above, plus qualify on older repertoire that the Chorus has reported on before. Those additional songs include:

“Winter Wonderland”“Secret of Christmas”“O Come All Ye Faithful”“Silent Night”“Joy to the World”“Do You Hear What I Hear”

In addition, EVERYONE will qualify on the 2-3 new Christmas pieces that will be introduced later this year.

Thank you in advance for striving to be the chorus that we all want to be!

Ho, ho, ho!Chuck

Choreo SummaryThanks to Ralph Brown, there is now a written choreo summary for “Slow Boat to China” posted on Groupanizer.

The summary is located with the other music files (charts and learning tracks) for the song.

This summary is designed to be used as a memory jogger/practice aid for those who have already been introduced to the choreo plan. It is NOT all-inclusive, as it’s nearly impossible to completely describe all of the elements of all of the moves in this format. But if you are already familiar with the moves, it may assist you in your individual practice.

In order to inspire each Chapter to promote quartet singing, Sunshine District is once again offering the quartet contest known as the Grapefruit League Novice Quartet Contest [GLNQC]. This year, it will be held at Labor Day Jamboree in Orlando, Florida, on Saturday at 4 p.m.

We invite every Chapter to participate in this program. By promoting Chapter Quartets to attend LDJ, take advantage of some excellent coaching, and then participate in the contest on Saturday afternoon, more members are exposed to the joys of quartet singing.

The Grapefruit League Novice Quartet Contest will be judged by an excellent panel of qualified judges and the winners will sing on the

Saturday Night Show on September 3rd. The winning quartet’s name will be placed on the Rik Ogden traveling trophy, which will be retained by the GLNQC Champions, for one year. The first, second and third place quartets will receive ribbons. NEW- First place champions will also be rewarded with paid registration for the upcoming Fall Convention!

Deadline for entries is August 27th!

Second, there’s the Dave LaBar Memorial Almost Classic Classic Golf Tournament on Sunday for those of you so inclined. Third, it’s a family thing all weekend long. You decide how much or how little participation you want to enjoy. Fourth, there’s the Grapefruit League Novice Quartet Contest open to any guys from anywhere who sing and the winners may make an appearance on the Saturday evening show. Last, but certainly not least, we’ve got two Barbershop shows to beat all Barbershop shows!

The Saturday night Jamboree features headliners – BHS 7th place finalists Throwback and 2013 BHS International Champions, Masterpiece! Local Sunshine favorites and International Reps and 2013 District Champs The Society, SAI family fun Bit N Pieces, Region 21 Champions SwingLine, and SAI Rising Star 6th Place Ingenue!!

Heralds of Harmony

HistoryC

OR

NER

On May 29, 2015, the Tampa Chapter will become 70 years old. You would think that a chapter that old would have nothing but old guys sitting in chairs while rehearsing and dreaming of the past; but that is not the case. We have a few white hairs and baldies, but most of our members today are young guys with lots of hair with color and everything. So I guess we are set for another 70 years. We will plan a celebration of our 70th birthday and will make a big deal out of it with bands, parades, and dancing girls and maybe not. But, we will let Tampa know that they have a fine singing organization and a community asset.

Last month, I listed non-barbershoppers who had been awarded the Barbershopper of the Month Award and it follows:

Since March 2001, the Barbershopper of the Month Award has been presented by the Board. A number of non-barbershoppers have won the award and they are as follows:

Jun 2005 – Taylor Anderson

Jun 2006 – Betty Messler

Apr 2007 – Kathy Billings

Jun 2007 – Julie Gilhousen

Feb 2008 – Liz Sipple, Patti Lawrence, and Roxanne Clapp

Feb 2009 – Patti Lawrence

Mar 2011 – Teil Rey

Mar 2012 – Roxanne Clapp

Nov 2012 – Dianne Roberts

Most of the above recipients were wives. However there were two exceptions, anyone remember who Taylor Anderson and Teil Rey were and why they were awarded? Answers will be in next month’s article.

Jun 2005 – Taylor Anderson, supported our first Heralds website

Mar 2011 – Teil Rey, a professional dance instructor and studio owner, worked with our choreography and, holy cow, was she good.

by Dave Roberts, President, TenorThis month presented an interesting problem for our website. The question of how do we build a riser placement chart for the combination chorus was the problem. I was Tony’s riser placement guy back in 2001 when we had 105 members in our Nashville Contest Chorus. Back then, there was no software to help with this problem and we used magnets, each labeled with the member’s name, and these magnets were ‘stuck’ to a large metal square establishing the member’s riser position. What a pain in the “keeshter.”

That was a cumbersome solution to a problem due to the size of the chorus. Today, we approach a similar-size problem with a bit more complexity. How do we have dual members join our Chorus with the specific intent of singing in the combination and competition chorus. That begged the question of how were we to keep our member statistics on attendance, qualification, and yes, a riser position distinguished from our regular Heralds Chorus and our combined chorus with Big O.

I know our Groupanizer software probably has multiple ways of handling this problem, but one readily became available. A member can have multiple roles within the chorus such as an active member, section leader, listener, and many others; but a role was set up for a combination chorus member. By using this role for our dual members, all functions of our website became available to our Big O friends.

I know this is probably more information than you need about our website software, but I hope you can appreciate the flexibility of all the chorus management functions that are available. And, no, I am not a salesman.

That’s right, you read that correctly. The Tampa Herald placed 5th in the 2014 Barbershop Harmony Society PROBE International Bulletin Contest (IBC).

PROBE is the acronym for “Public Relations Officers and Bulletin Editors” and is the Society’s subsidiary that supports and recognizes the mostly-unsung editors who dutifully create these masterpieces on a regular basis. In many chapters (Tampa not included!), internal communications often begin and end with the chapter bulletin, a tradition dating back to the days of manual typewriters and mimeographs. The purpose of the IBC is to promote better communication within our Society by encouraging chapter editors to produce bulletins that meet certain criteria in three categories: Content – Layout and Reproduction – Grammar and Style. Winning chapter and editor names are added to a plaque on permanent display in the Barbershoppers’ Museum at Society headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee.

In the Grammar and Style category, it is noteworthy to mention that Tampa scored two points below first place. Congratulations to our editor and go-to gal, Roxanne Clapp, wife of our Immediate Past President and Lead, Larry Clapp, as well as a hearty thank you to each of you who contribute to the monthly publication of The Tampa Herald.

In addition to the newsletter that is published on our website and distributed electronically each month, we owe Roxanne a debt of gratitude for all the work she does for our Chorus. Thank you Roxanne for representing the Heralds so eloquently. We appreciate YOU! —Dave Roberts, President

(Continued on next page)

Active HoH Members, watch your inbox for weekly rehearsal notes sent out by The Colonel, Russ Powell.

Rehearsal Notes, July 14, 2014aAnother exciting rehearsal with our momentum building. Everyone seemed to be pumped and ready to sing and ready to jump every hurdle. Fired up with the recent incredible Vegas performances, the Heralds were eager to listen to Tony’s motivational message as to the future direction of the Chorus. We have to continue to build on what we accomplished the previous week. We have to continue to grow and learn. Each week we have to keep getting better and better. This can only happen with consistent focus, thorough preparation and review each week. We have to keep moving forward and growing excellence. It is an honor and privilege to be a Herald.

aBe physical. If you are singing, your body is excited. Be awake and connected physically for any run-through or song performance. Singer’s stance: how you stand is important; (Ralph reminds us to flex our knees), stay engaged, remain connected with whole-body involvement; body and face with accelerated air pushing the lyrical message. Be physically ready to dissipate sound on the downbeat.

aBetter man. More treadmill time: Add some exercise or gym-time to your daily routine. Must be in good physical shape to sing and constantly replenish a strong air supply.

a“First Hello” is not a sad song: Happy memories; beautiful song about a beautiful relationship. Nothing should be down in any way; an uplifting song; more warmth in the sound, not heavy, just conversing. Your countenance should keep sending face. “Favorite pal” sung with passion and more tug. “Say I” sung with chest up as in Superman cape.

aChina: This song has to be given more substance and more respect; not a fluff song, more vocal energy, more texture added. Sing almost on our heels, like we are really cool and suave; smooth talker and smooth lover; rises and falls, growing then backing up, then growing again.

aPreparation for next week. “Joy to the World,” “Tonight, Tonight,” plus competition set: “First Hello” and China. Be looking for the eight-bar section added to China that will soon be on the website.

aPlan to attend every joint rehearsal with Big O and HoH in Orlando on August 9, 23, and September 20. Approximate time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Rehearsal Notes, July 21, 2014aAnother amazing rehearsal with over ten guests on the risers. Congratulations to Christian Espinoza for passing his audition. The Lead section keeps getting better. A video of the recent “Vocal Majority” Vegas competition performance was presented. It is hard to imagine that the “Vocal Majority” are mere mortals. They are achieving excellence on the risers because they absolutely believe what they are singing. The visceral energy is overwhelming; a lot of heart. It is amazing how passionate they perform. The enormity factor is remarkable and hard to capture on the

video as compared to a live performance.

a The energy that Tony is bringing to rehearsal is absolutely awesome and he expects us, as the performing artists, to reciprocate by stepping up our game in a similar fashion. Got to be here in mind, heart and soul. We are expected to be the artists on the risers, fully engaged and responsible for artistic expression and performance energy. The sooner we buy-in to our own personal increased focus and our own personal increased intensity, the better we will become. The Heralds are going to be GREAT EVERY WEEK, RIGHT HERE IN TAMPA, RIGHT HERE ON THE RISERS! That is the goal. You can feel the electricity building!! And it is happening in the summer months when things typically slow down. This is an affirmation of what we have been working on for so long.

aEach Bass singer should have only one voice. Different voices and sound production from the same person is not a good thing. Remain the same singer with the same voice in all registers. Sound production changes on descending scales, going from high note to low note. Mid to upper register is fine. When Basses descend the scale, they tend to go into their chest voice and become a different singer by placing their sound further back in their throat. The mid register or upper register sound placement is good. Lower-register Bass sound needs to be forward with uplifted soft palate with the same sound quality and placement as the mid to upper register.

aSong notes:

-- “Joy to the World”: ms 7, 8, 9 in the passage “Heav’n and nature sing,” pronounce “Heav’n and” as >>>> “Hev nan” <<<<.

-- China: Ms 64 - no breath for Basses.

-- “Tonight”: ms 11 - on “r” in Star. Pronounced “Stah”

aQuote for the week.

“Happiness is a fleeting emotion that can be squelched by circumstance. Joy is a representation of who and what you are no matter what the circumstance.” — Anthony DeRosa

aPreparation for next week: Contest set: First Hello, Slow Boat with special attention to insert. Review (“Caroling, Caroling”), and “Show Me Where the Good Times Are.” Off paper on China for next week. With the addition of the insert, it will be necessary to re-qualify on “Slow Boat To China.” Start submitting your recordings now.

Rehearsal notes, July 28, 2014aOutstanding rehearsal. Great chorus sound — highly charged with energy and enthusiasm. Many guests on the risers — four passed auditions: Mike and Dave Cross (father and son duo, both Leads), Rich Casanzio (graciously switched to Baritone), Jeremy Reynolds (Tenor). Ralph introduced China choreo package.

Thank you for the beautiful Heralds “Happy Birthday.” (Chorus sang to Russ!)

aCombined chorus. Only three magnificent opportunities. Attendance at all three strongly recommended: August 9 in Gainesville - 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. — riser placement and complete run-through of contest set. Rehearsal will be electrified with creative genius, high expectation, and camaraderie. Be

there to experience the artistic and emotional refinements; plus, the analysis and synthesis of choral vocal production with focus on uplifted clarity. George Gipp will be coaching choreo to amplify emotional message of contest set. August 23 in Orlando, September 20 in Orlando.

aKeep your warm air moving constantly. Support movement of air under your sound. This was the major theme of the evening. This is NOT a louder or more volume issue — sound that is air driven — more space with warm air — consistent air. Four elements of really good sound production: 1) Supported warm air constantly moving; 2) Vocal freedom without any unnatural forced pressure or constriction; 3) Uplifted space of soft palate for tall vowels; 4) Forward placement in the beak for ping and ring.

aSong notes:

aChina: Given invitation to be more expressive, more sultry and personally involved in the meaning of the song by having more fun with the playful and innocent side of love. Add more mystery, spice and charm, more ebb and flow: This is a “you and me” song with plenty of personal pronouns — more private time with her — delivering the lyric on purpose — tangible with a lot of facial expression and interest.

aFirst Hello: Tiny “s” with an aspirated “H” — NOT “Fir Stello”, but ➡️ “FIRsT Hello” — less burning flesh with too much sizzle or “SSS.”

aNext week preparation. Review rehearsal video with emphasis on China choreo!! Continue work on Show Me, “Caroling, Caroling,” “The Birthday of A King,” plus contest set: First Hello and “Slow Boat to China.” Requalification on the six Christmas songs (Caroling, Jingle 2012, Santa, Emmanuel, Drummer, Birthday) will require significant deliberate work. One submittal per week might be considered a good pace as a guide.

Rehearsal Notes, August 4, 2014.aAnother sterling rehearsal conducted by our sterling Director. Welcome to all our guests and a special welcome to our newest member of the Baritone Section, Steve Janes. Thanks to Ralph Brown for a great job on choreo. Don’t forget to watch the video!!!

aHarmonious Humility. There is a conversation going on. The director is communicating with us with his hands, face and body and we are communicating back with our voice, face and body. That conversation requires some very careful watching and reacting; i.e., laser-focused watching and responsive reacting. The conversation is us watching the director and reacting to him. We can’t be stuck in our old ways or the conversation begins to crumble. We can’t be stagnant or the same as last week or the communication deteriorates. As soon as you step on the risers, you are agreeing to participate in the conversation and/or communication in order to get better. This is really an issue of humility. You have to be more willing and open to change. You have to be more willing to interact. You have to be more willing to watch and make the correction immediately in order to get better.

aIf you are the same singer you were ten years ago, you just lost ten years. You can’t rest on your laurels and expect good results. You can’t sing the way you used to and expect to get better. You have to constantly improve. Even if you are a great singer today, tomorrow you will have to work harder just to stay the same. There is no staying the same in singing or anything else in life. You have to continuously change in order to get better. If you are not

growing, if you are not learning, if you are not changing, it’s possible you are going the other direction. :-) We come to HoH for growth in many ways.

aThought for the week: “You can never underestimate the influence you have on others simply by the expression you carry on your face.”

aFirst combined rehearsal. This Sat., Aug 9, Grace Presbyterian Church, 3146 NW 13th Street, Gainesville, Fl 32609. Chorus call: 9 a.m. Bring a sack lunch or eat out.

8/9 COMBINED REHEARSAL NOTES by Jason Lee, Jacksonville Music & Performance VP

VOCAL TECHNIQUE-Take all the throat out of the sound... anything that is not freely

produced will stick out even more in a chorus of this size!-Each phrase has to start good and get better.-Bs: from above. No proof, just be.-Ring with topspin- it’s much easier to match.-Ld: Over-command, over-sell, don’t over-sing.-Equal amounts of passion and precision = excellence-The look of the sound and the body complement have to match.

“SLOW BOAT TO CHINA”-Everything in the intro is going to “Don’t say maybe”-Ld: “all to myself”: rainbow the entire phrase, feed more on “all to”-Expand on the expression during “weepin’ on a faraway shore”-Bs: “China, all”: same vowel

“FROM THE FIRST HELLO”-”but now we have come...”: more agitation in the phrase-”each took our separate way”: extend the vowel on “AH-ur”-”dear and sweet”: Bs: watch volume on “dear”; really far forward on “ee”

vowels-NO BREATH at “pleasure to meet...a special treat”-BREATH at “say I, from the first hello (Br) to the last...”-key change: Bs: -”as I watch you go”: the emotion is UP!-Bs/Br: “watch you GO”: as much lift as on “you”-”say good-” is quick-Bs/Br: “say good-BYE”: audible key change! -”I won’t say goodbye” is the point of dynamic contrast to set up the

climax and tag.-Crescendo through “you’ll be always there”-In the climax and tag, worry about the lock and ring more than the

volume-QUICK breath at “...pal say I, from the first hello...”-”last”: on the held note, don’t let the direction of the sound stall. Continuous motion.

-”last, the LAST”: T: more open sound; Br: use “the” to get higher on “last”; Bs: mor air, relax the throat.

NEXT COMBINED REHEARSAL: August 23, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., in Oviedo. Details to come. See you then!

Many thanks to all our

advertisers in the Encore ‘14 Program!

click to see them alland the program too!

Rehearsal Notes, August 11, 2014aWe had a productive rehearsal where we had an opportunity to fix some trouble spots after an exhilarating weekend rehearsal in Gainesville. Congratulations to Brian Hutchison, recipient of the Joe DeRosa Award of Excellence on August 11, 2014. Don’t forget to take a look at the VM “Road to Gold” when you need a little inspiration. Also, Dave reminds us to take a second look at our advertisers the next time you are planning a shopping spree. We need to support those who support us. And thanks to Steve Cragg for making all those Christmas discs so that you can review your track as you trek down the highway.

aSecond Nature Formula. Tony credits his dad, Joe De Rosa, for the ninety-times, second nature formula. Simply stated, it takes, at least, ninety repetitions of singing a passage correctly before you own it.

aDynamics in Slow Boat. In ms 48 harmony parts: Crescendo to “heart,” then Harmony parts sing ***softly*** “I’m gonna melt your beautiful heart ...”, during Lead post.

aReview Slow Boat ramp-up to key change in ms 42, then ms 43 thru 46, particularly tuning on “so big n’ shi-ny” in 46. This is gonna take some time to ‘own’. The extra reps on your own will be helpful.

aFinishing word sounds is like releasing a bird into the sky. Let the bird fly up and away and not drop like a brick. Get through all of the word

sound and release away from you. This includes every finish, but had specific reference to the last word “sound” in Caroling.

aErosion. Do not let your sound erode away. Hold the vowel sound all the way to the end of the phrase. Don’t fidget or change the shape of your mouth or move your jaw or it will give the appearance in front of the chorus that the sound is pulling away.

aComments from the Peanut Gallery and a Call to Focus. It is difficult to be on top of our game and always be 100% baseball-ready all the time. However, if we keep losing our focus on the risers with only 20% retention of review material that we just went over minutes earlier, we are probably not going to get where we want to go for the next several years. It is very easy to lose ground and sing at a B-level at a moment’s notice. Conversely, the window of greatness is very small and requires a lot more accountability and awareness on a consistent basis. We all know we can do better and we just need some extra encouragement to do so. That seventh inning stretch is almost necessary just to remain alert and alive. There is something about being a Herald that makes us want to do better. Improvement while we are together is an expected element of our precious time together.

aRalph Brown will be conducting early-bird choreo next week starting at 6:15 p.m. Got to be there. You don’t want to go to the next combined rehearsal without knowing the choreo cold. Next week, focus will be

on contest set and other material for the Fall District weekend: (“Smile,” “Tonight” and Lord Bless); plus

“Jingle Bells,” Caroling, and “Birthday of A King.” Have a great week!!!!

Interesting and Exciting Day Joint Rehearsal with Jacksonvilleby Roxanne Clapp, Editor

REMAINING HOH & BIG O JOINT REHEARSALS

August 23September 20

Location:Tuskawilla Presbyterian Church, Aloma Ave in Oviedo

Must be member in good standing and qualified on the contest songs to attend.

Our first Saturday joint rehearsal was held on August 9th from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. in Gainesville. The Orlando venue was not available for our first joint rehearsal with Big O and our Jacksonville buddies came through with this alternate location at Grace Presbyterian Church in Gainesville (FOR THIS REHEARSAL ONLY).

The risers arrived around 8:30 a.m. and were all set up and ready for singin’ by the time I arrived at 9 a.m. Great job to all of those that arrived early enough and helped out with the risers.

Official chorus call time was at 9:30 a.m., and it seems everyone planned their drive time accordingly, all NINE of the risers were packed with barbershoppers!

There was a lot of great singing in the morning and Tony made a few changes in riser placement. Do you know where you stand?

I don’t know if everyone was as happy as I was to see the lunch break roll around at 12:30 p.m., I just couldn’t wait to get me some of that delicious red velvet chex mix that Shannon brought :). Tony allowed us all to come back at 20 minutes till 2 instead of the oh so short-timed 1:40 p.m. (Isn’t he a sweet guy?!)

A lot more incredible sound filled that room in the afternoon. At 2:30 p.m., Triple-G (George Gipp) took over and showed everyone some fancy choreo moves, and Shane Scott wrapped it all up around 3:30 p.m. by directing out KTWWS.

A lot of guys worked together on breaking down the risers. They were down and loaded on the Heralds wagon in no time! Then we were off on the road again... with some fond memories and a vision of a very bright future.

Note that this is THE ONLY Gainesville rehearsal - the other Saturday rehearsals will be in Oviedo.

Do you feel the excitement,

hear our singing improving, see all the new members & guests at HoH rehearsals lately? ... The improvements are evident and attracting new singers to our group. —Jerry Tobin

I look forward to further development and an ever-crowded risers. —Drew Kirkman, Lead, HOH

OUR MISSIONThe Tampa Bay Heralds of Harmony Chorus and quartets seek to pre-serve and further develop the barbershop style of a cappella singing

through musical excellence and through frequent public performances for the broadest possible spectrum of West Central Florida audiences,

and to contribute to the cultural development of the community through responsible public service.
