Welcome Back! Time to start thinking SNOW! The September meeting will focus on our 2019/2020 trips. We have eight (8) ski trips scheduled and one (1) non-ski trip to Belgium and Holland. This year, we are introducing our first trip as a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council to

Zermatt, Utah. We have two trips heading to Canada - Banff, Alberta and Quebec. And, the BSC will be joining the Blue Ridge Ski Council on its trip to Japan. Joe Herbert will be leading this trip for the BSC. Our featured East Coast trip is to Killington, Vermont. Lots of space available on the Whitefish and Quebec trips. Check them out on the internet and sign up today. Leaders and Assistants will be at the September meeting eager to tell you all about their trips and take your down payment.

Everyone who renewed should have received a membership card in the mail. In with your card, was a BSC decal for use on your skis or helmet. Help promote the club and attach the sticker in a prominent spot so that fellow skiers know that you are a proud BSC member. If anyone asks, tell them about our great club and ask them to join. In addition to the stickers, we are planning on having other promotional items throughout the next year. Our goal is to grow the number of BSC members. As they say, the more the merrier. If you have not yet renewed your membership, please plan to do so at the September meeting. The renewal was due June 1, but it’s never too late to join the fun. See Loren Heaps (Membership Director) or Mark Jones at the September meeting. Better yet, log in to baltimoreskiclub.org and renew there.

Planned for October is the annual BSC Crab Feast. Looking ahead, our Ski Expo will be held November 13, 2019. The Expo will feature local ski shoppes, resorts, and other vendors. There will be door prizes, raffle and silent auction. You won’t want to miss it.

Oh, by the way, Troy the hotdog guy is back again this year at our Sept meeting. Make sure you come early to start the evening with a free dog. He has all the toppings to make the best dogs.

Thanks to everyone who led a summer activity and to those who attended the events. Lots of articles and photos in the Schuss to prove that BSC members are having a great time, on and off the slopes. But the fun doesn’t stop. Keep checking for announcements and let Christopher Pukalski know if you would like to lead an event.

I’m off to my last week at the beach before summer ends but I’ll be back from the Outer Banks just in time for the September meeting. I’m looking forward to seeing all my BSC friends. See you then!!!!!!

BRSC Winterfest 2019/Sunday River, Maine

Once again, Sunday River, Maine did not disappoint! With ski in/ski out accommodations at the Grand Summit, uncrowded slopes, and excellent ski conditions for the week, this was the best Blue Ridge Ski Council Winterfest to date. Over 115 BRSC members participated in the event, representing 7 BRSC clubs.

Our bus pulled out bright and early on Sunday morning for our journey north to Maine. Everyone helped themselves to hot coffee and donut holes and also enjoyed homemade banana nut muffins, courtesy of Joe Remsky. Dave Karczmarek’s special Bloody Mary cocktail made a mid-morning appearance for the group’s pleasure as well. During the course of our bus ride, Mark Chapman asked me for the 100

th time what was the difference in distance between Sunday River and

Sugarloaf and which resort did I prefer? (Mark, what would I do without you?). We arrived at the resort in good time, checked in and headed to the hotel bar and restaurant, Camp, for some food and drinks before turning in for the night.

Monday morning dawned and the group enjoyed a delicious and varied buffet breakfast before heading out to the slopes. With 8 mountain peaks to explore, Sunday River had something for everyone. Many folks took advantage of the outdoor heated pool and hot tub. That evening we gathered for the BRSC welcome party and a good time was had by all.

On Tuesday, our Baltimore Ski Club group enjoyed an exclusive and tasty Fat Tuesday dinner, complete with beads, which featured a special dessert of King Cupcakes (our version of the Fat Tuesday King Cake). Tradition has it that the person that finds the baby baked in the cake will enjoy luck and prosperity and will be crowned “king” or “queen.” Our lucky winner was Jim Curtis, who was then crowned “King of Mardi Gras”! His duty for the evening was to draw names for prizes given out at the end of night and he performed his task well.

Skiers were “racer ready” for the BRSC race held on Wednesday. Race results were announced that evening at the après ski reception. BSC competitors turned in a great performance. Winners representing our club were John Wotell, Jim Curtis, Jocelyn Curtis, Kevin Funk, Stan Wales, Jack Wotell, Tom Affeldt, Marc Burger, Diana Sugiuchi, and Marty Schnuit.

Thursday, we all relished one last day on the slopes before we bid Sunday River goodbye the next morning. The day ended with BRSC farewell party. Compliments to our hosts at Sunday River and Joe Ferrara, of Banchi Outdoor Adventures for taking such good care us during our stay.

We had a great collection of folks on the trip, including the usual suspects (you know who you are) but also some old faces and some new faces. It was certainly a treat for John Wotell to have his children, Jack Wotell, Larry Wotell and Paul Jent, along to ski with him at Sunday River. Michael and Melody Patton from Susquehanna Ski and Snowboard Club joined us and it was a pleasure to have them aboard. Carol Moyer and George Clinton from Crabtowne were a welcome addition to the party. It was nice to have Francis Thio and his lovely wife, Irene, along as well as Domi Hajdo and Cherr’ie Arkuszeski, not to mention Bill and Linda Lahey. Sallie Bunce and Cathy Greenawalt were a hoot! And, Melanie Wisniewski finally convinced Earl Deisroth to give skiing a try. Last, but not least, I would like to give a shout out to Mary Nichols, who had to cancel at the absolute final hour due to illness, we missed you(but Beth really, really enjoyed her single room). And to those of you I didn’t mention by name, I’m delighted you chose to jump on the bus with me and I hope you’ll do so in the future.

The destination for the Blue Ridge Ski Council Winterfest for 2020 is Killington, Vermont, March 8-13, 2020. I hope you’ll join us.

Sun Valley and the BRSC This was not my first time on a Blue Ridge Ski Council trip with the Baltimore Ski Club, but it was my first time to Sun Valley, and I was not disappointed! The trip was February 2

nd to February 9

th and

proved to be a great winter experience. Sun Valley is not the easiest resort to reach, but the journey was worth it.

The historic Sun Valley Lodge lived up to its reputation, full of first-class amenities and 5-star ser-vices. The photos that adorn the walls of past visitors range from US Presidents, international celeb-rities, Hollywood stars, both past and present, and the rich and famous from all walks of life.

Our accommodations at the Sun Valley Lodge Apartments were well appointed, spacious and only a short walk from the main building and pool area.

All the BRSC events were well run and organized. We enjoyed an informal Super Bowl party at the main lodge on Sunday, a mixer and welcome party on Monday, a Council race on Tuesday, and fi-nally, a farewell party on Thursday. Leader Chris Rose also hosted a happy hour event at his condo on Wednesday and did a great job making participants feel welcome all week long.

Ketchum is a first-class ski town with shops and dining to meet anyone’s budget and taste. From fine dining to burgers and beer, this town had it all.

We were blessed with several days of snow which made skiing Bald Mountain a great experience. For the less adventurous, Dollar Mountain proved to be a great option.

If you have never been on a Blue Ridge Ski Council trip with the Club, I would highly recommend you check one out! It’s a great way to mix and meet fellow winter enthusiasts from other clubs and is always a good value.

The BRSC Winter Carnival for 2020 is Snowmass, CO from 1/25-2/1/20 with Mark Jones as the BSC Trip Leader and…. Save the Date!! The 2021 destination is scheduled for Telluride, CO from 2/6- 2/13/21.

The Director’s Forum: Tips for Trips

Why is our flight time so early? Can’t we get better times? I checked online myself and there was a better flight schedule for our trip, why isn’t our group booked on those flights? These are just a few of the questions I’ve been asked over the years. I decided to reach out to a couple of experts in the travel industry to help with the answers to your questions, Effie Rubinstein of SPORTOURS and Doug Horstman of Encompasse Tours LLC.

Here’s what Effie had to say,” You may lose a bit of sleep and the alarm goes off too early, but there are many known advantages to traveling on early morning flights. You get to start your vacation sooner!

Early morning departures have the best on-time performance which gets you to your destination without delays. The evening flights have already landed and the sky is clear of incoming flights. It’s all points outta there for the outgoing flights and avoids delays.

PAGE 6 SCHUSS SEPTEMBER 2019

It’s always great to have an early departure so you have all day to get to your destination in the event of a delayed aircraft due to maintenance, mechanical issues, weather, etc. Heading to ski country, our flights are also affected by the high-altitude conditions which may cause a deviation and require an alternate airport for landing. Weight restrictions may allow the passengers to travel but luggage may need to be flown on another flight or bused to the destination. Flying on an early flight provides the whole day for back up options for travelers, luggage and connecting flights.

Flights after 8:00am are subject to the delays that increase throughout the day. We try and avoid the last flight of the day as your have no back up options in the event of a flight cancellation. These flights may get cancelled as flight crews may exceed their maximum flight time or segments flown in a day and are not permitted to fly additional flights.

There are concerns on accommodating groups on some of the smaller regional planes that fly directly into the resort’s local airport, such as Aspen and Sun Valley, that hold 44 passengers and only 30 of those seats are allocated to group space.”

Doug added his input, “In the course of a travel day, airline itineraries vary dramatically in price. In some instances, flight times that are more favorable can cost as much as $200 more. When booking a group itinerary to a ski destination out West, our first priority is to try and confirm a mid-morning outbound flight with an early afternoon return. That said, careful consideration has to be given when comparing the cost/benefit of a more expensive fare with preferable flight times versus a flight time that may leave quite early in the morning. The goal is to book a schedule that gives the club the best blend of price and schedule.

Group travel is much more involved that individual travel. Nowadays, families and individuals can book everything online, whereas a group of ten or more people cannot. Air reservations need to be booked by Tour Operators and their exclusive, private airline desks. At the same time, large blocks of lodging space have to be quoted and monitored for ongoing availability while the other aspects of the trip are being worked on. The typical group trip work period begins as early as January of year one and extends through the club’s travel with an average of 100 hours of labor in between. Once the group is in travel, many additional considerations need to be made with regards to airline interaction, especially if there are delays or cancellations of any sort.”

The Trips Committee of the Baltimore Ski Club works closely with Effie and Doug and other tour operators to provide the best travel experience possible to our membership taking all factors into consideration. As you can see, group travel is different from individual travel, particularly air travel. The logistics of getting a group of 25-50 people to a specific destination is much more challenging than booking for 2 people, for example. Our tour companies are able to reserve and hold seating blocks on airlines for a period of time before penalties are assessed, which isn’t possible for individual travel. Some less accessible destinations have limited flights and connecting flights must match up, hence, some early BWI departures and possibly some early return flights. When possible, we always try to fly Southwest to save on baggage fees. However, there are just some destinations that Southwest does not fly to, such as Bozeman, Montana, which those of you that skied Big Sky may have noticed.

And Effie puts a final positive spin on flying out early, “Arriving at the resort as early as possible allows time to acclimate, schedule a welcome reception and distribute lift tickets, check out your new digs for the week, pick up your rentals and anything you may need for a fabulous week away, and… relax.”

The Baltimore Ski Club held a happy hour at the Riverwatch on Friday, August 9, 2019. We were blessed with a perfect day with light breezes coming off the river. About 20 BSC members, guests and friends attended. The food, the drinks and the band were very good. A good time was had by all who attended. The club has been coming to this location for over a decade and there is no reason to stop. See you next August.

The Baltimore Ski Club held its summer 2019 happy hour at the beach on July 20 at Hammerheads at the Indian River Inlet in Delaware. Dave Karczmarek, who came up with the idea of a happy hour at the beach five years ago, and wife Eileen came in from Bethany Beach. Also from Bethany were old friends Steve Cawunder and Betty Moffett. Bob & Stuart Sanford made their first beach happy hour from their place in Ocean City. Also from OC were BSC members Joe (Mal) Mihalovich and Jan Serwint and Blake. Joe Herbert came in from Rehoboth, but it was too far to kayak. Bill and Rosalie Tydings came from

Dewey Beach. The prize for coming farthest goes to Steve Andrews who drove in from Baltimore City, spent the day at the beach, came to happy hour early enough to see the band, and then drove back to Baltimore. Quite a day. The day was sunny but one of the hottest of the year. The group commandeered two outdoor picnic tables in the shade. The food was good and the beer was cold. The beach band was good for the early arrivers. It was a very good time and fun to catch up with old friends who don't make many club activities.

Hunt Valley Pub Crawl & Concert

A crowd enjoyed music by the Josh Christina Band in the Hunt Valley Towne Centre on July 19.

(l-r) Bob Little, Jocelyn Curtis, Myron Oppenheimer, Maxine Cohen, Kathy Todd, Rick Todd

Several brave souls ventured out on a sultry Friday evening to enjoy the BSC pub crawl and concert in the Hunt Valley Towne Centre. The Josh Christina Band entertained a large crowd with pop rock songs for an hour and a half. As the band played, friends relaxed in chairs around the outdoor stage, danced, or meandered between restaurants and stores. Members of our small group casually drifted from dinner at the Green Turtle to drinks on the outdoor patio of Bar Louie. Despite the heat, it was a very festive and pleasant atmosphere. We shared anecdotal stories of past ski trips and also made plans for next year’s ski season. In fact, just thinking about next winter was a way to keep cool. The converse will probably also be true when we are on the slopes in frigid weather and remember the sizzling summer heat.

Travel Insurance: Limited or Comprehensive? Reprinted courtesy of the Blue Ridge Ski Council The question of how much coverage one should buy with Trip Insurance has no straight-forward answer. It depends!

Comprehensive Coverage: For trips involving large amounts of physical activity, remote destinations, civil unrest or risky transportation, for example, comprehensive coverage that includes trip cancellation, medical rescue and evacuation, trip delays, personal property losses and even repatriation emergencies, is a must. Whether this coverage needs to be purchased separately from a commercial Travel Insurance carrier, or can be obtained (at least on a case-by-case basis) from one’s current Health-Property (Homeowners & Automobile) or Credit Card insurance is a judgement call for each individual. It should be recognized, however, that each of these “insurers” wants to be the “secondary insurer” or insurer of “last resort”. In other words, read all your insurance coverage documents carefully before deciding which to rely most heavily on. Commercially, this type of coverage is generally priced based on the trip’s cost and/or duration, as well as the insured’s age bracket.

Limited Coverage: If the cost of travel insurance is a factor, then coverage that at least includes medical emergencies, evacuation and even re-patriation is strongly advised; particularly where the destinations and/or physical activities present clear health risks. This coverage may also include certain types of trip delays and their attendant costs. Generally this type of insurance is “fixed-price” and relatively inexpensive, as it is not determined by the trip’s cost, although the insurer’s age may be a factor.

Again, Read the Fine Print! Not just the summary of coverage, whose language may be very ambiguous! As this traveler recently discovered when submitting a claim for a “trip interruption” event, the Basic “medical, etc.” which has become a standard group policy included in many of our overseas ski trips, will NOT cover events and claims under the “Trip Interruption” clause, as this coverage is

available only under the “Trip Cancellation” (full coverage) option. In other words, claims for situations where on the return trip a traffic accident or similar circumstances may prevent reaching an airport in time to board a scheduled flight, resulting in rebooking fees, layover expenses, etc., will not be covered under the “basic medical” insurance.

But, it will cover the cost of trip delays (like overnight lodging and meals) due to missed airline connections when a flight is delayed and a connecting flight is missed for reasons not under an airline’s control and therefore not covered by them. Lost or delayed baggage costs are also covered. Lesson learned: please read the entire policy to learn the extent of its coverage, and not be surprised and disappointed after the fact.

Shop Around: There are many travel agents and insurance carriers in this business, with some rates available for half the cost of others, so shop around. The BRSC may be of help to its Member Clubs or individual travelers in identifying firms with reasonable rates and claims-response records.

Aspen Skiing Co. applies to replace Big Burn chairlift at Snowmass August 22, 2019

Posted from the Aspen Times via Facebook

Aspen Skiing Co. wants to replace one of its workhorse chairlifts at Snowmass Ski Area and has asked the U.S. Forest Service to do so. Skico is looking to swap out the aging Big Burn detachable quad chairlift with an updated lift of the same type. The application was submitted Aug. 13, and White River National Forest Supervisor Scott Fitzwilliams signed an acceptance letter Thursday, triggering the agency’s review. The critical criteria for review are “purpose and need” for the new lift. “The Purpose of the Big Burn Lift replacement is to replace the aging, existing high-speed detachable-grip quad chairlift — that has served Aspen Skiing Co./White River National Forest guests well for the past 33 years — with a new high-speed detachable-grip quad chairlift that incorporates the most current state-of-the-art components and technology,” the application by Skico Director of Mountain Planning Victor Gerdin said. “There is a need for this proposed action because it has been determined the existing lift can no longer provide, due to its age, reliable and consistent access to some of Snowmass Mountain’s most popular intermediate terrain,” the application continued. The Big Burn Chairlift was among the first generation of high-speed quads that Skico installed at its ski areas. It replaced a slow, fixed-grip double chair that had lines of legendary length. The high-speed lift debuted for the 1986-87 season and was an immediate hit. It was relieved of some pressure when Skico replaced the slow, old Sheer Bliss chairlift with a high-speed quad, providing alternative access to Big Burn terrain. The aging Big Burn lift’s “haul-rope” failed a recent inspection and requires replacement prior to the 2019-20 season, Gerdin wrote. That emphasizes the need to get it replaced, he said. The replacement lift is proposed in the same alignment as the existing lift. “The lift’s bottom terminal will move approximately 250 feet up the line to improve circulation and lift loading behind the bottom terminal,” Skico’s application said. “The top terminal will move slightly uphill or downhill to improve circulation in the unloading area.” Skico is considering chairs with retractable “bubble” covers to provide additional passenger comfort on the lift, Gerdin wrote. The lift is somewhat exposed, particularly on stretches without trees. The capacity will remain at 2,200 passengers per hour. The lift replacement was among the projects outlined in the 2013 Snowmass Mountain Master Development Plan, which was approved by the Forest Service. That will streamline review of the specific proposal. Skico’s application didn’t identify when the lift would be replaced, if approved. Skico President and CEO Mike Kaplan said earlier this week it was too soon to tell if both the Big Burn lift replacement at Snowmass and the Pandora’s terrain expansion at Aspen Mountain would be pursued at the same time next summer. Skico is seeking approval from Pitkin County for Pandora’s and other projects on Aspen Mountain.

BSC Trips Cancellation Policy

1.The Club does not intend to unduly penalize a trip participant who cancels from a BSC trip. However, other trip participants should not have to incur additional costs due to your cancellation.

2.Deposits and payments made toward the trip reservations being cancelled will be held until such time as a determination can be made that the Club or trip participants will not incur additional costs due to non-recoverable costs.

3.Non-recoverable costs are defined as those that are associated with the trip that due to contractual obligations cannot be recovered when the individual cancels his/her trip. Non-recoverable also include those costs associated with replacing a person or persons on a trip (i.e., name change charges on airline tickets, etc.) Refunds, if any, will be made based on the non-recoverable involved plus a cancellation fee. Cancellation costs will not exceed the cost of the trip. Club cancellation fee will be dropped if non-recoverable costs exceed 50% of the trip cost.

4.Replacement of a trip participant by a trip participant is strictly prohibited. Only the Trip Leader or Assistant Trip Leader can replace a trip participant who is unable to go on the trip. The canceling trip participant may suggest a replacement candidate to the trip leader or assistant trip leader, however the canceling trip participant is responsible for the cancellation fee (if applicable) and any non-recoverable costs.

5.Be sure to know the cancellation dates in relation to the trip you select so that you can avoid monetary losses. The following cancellation policy in is effect in relation to BSC trips. NR=Non-recoverable costs

Multi-Day Bus, Carpool or Flight trips: More than 125 days before departure - $0 More than 110 days before departure - $10 & NR

What to Wear in Winter in Japan? Recommended Clothing In January and February, you will need a down jacket or a coat. You will definitely need gloves and a muffler too On windy days, it is a good idea to have a knit cap and earmuffs. If you plan to be outside for a long time on cloudy days or in the evenings, we recommend that you use disposable kairo (heating pads) to protect your hands and feet from the cold. The heating pads can be purchased at any convenience store, supermarket, and drugstore. A pack of 10 heating pads costs around 200 yen. In order to use them, you just need to open the pack. The iron sand contained in the pad will begin to heat up in contact with the oxygen in the air. The pad will stay warm from 8 to 12 hours.
