Ebbs and flow of the Church

The mountains my disappear, and the hills may come to an end, but my love will never disappear; my promise of peace will not come to an end – Isaiah 54:10

August 19, we as the church had the privilege to have Pastor Wayne Kent, Executive Director of Disciples Heritage preach at both our Sunday services. His sermon “Making your List” made me think deeply about my life and who I would put on my rhetorical list of names. I know I have may people who helped me along in my path in life; in my career, my studies, my faith and during many character building moments. I hope I get the chance to thank many of them personally, either here on earth or on the other side of the veil. If you didn’t get a chance to hear Pastor Kent’s address, I hope you go to the web page and watch or listen to it.

I was fortunate to have dinner with Pastor Kent and his wife Leslie the Saturday night with many of the Elders (past and present) in the CLC. He discussed about the ebbs and flows of the local churches and how many churches dissolve after 40 years if the church does not revise its common vision and goals. We at First Christian Church of Richlands have a strong heritage and can thank those who had the vision to start our church 178 year ago, about 20 yrs later the vision changed and in 1882 the church built a sanctuary on the Hargett and Church streets. Christian Women’s Fellowship News Mary Ann Metts, Secretary

On Tues., Aug. 14, at 7 pm our CWF met with several members present. After praises and concerns

were shared, Tammy offered our opening prayer. Our devotion, ‘Grace and Peace’ by Billy Graham

was given by Rosolyn. It was about Jesus being our greatest Tranquilizer (or we may say Com-

forter). The devotion was based on Ephes. 4:7.

The first item of old business discussed was rescheduling our movie, “Miracles from Heaven.” It is

to be shown on Sept. 16, at 2:30pm in the church Fellowship Hall. Popcorn and sodas will be provided by our ladies.

Our church family is invited to the movie. Next, Mary Ann reported a good response from crafters. The CLC and FH

will provide hot dogs, chips, sodas, water, and desserts. We began changing the dates on the banners and posters on

Tues. Night, Aug. 21 at 6:30 pm in the CLC.

Our first item of new business was planning our grilled chicken dinner for Sept. 16 after our 11 o’clock service. Our

menu is grilled chicken, potato salad, string beans, apple rings, rolls, desserts and tea. CWF will provide the chickens.

The ladies will furnish all other items. The adult price is $8 and children 12 and under is $4. Also, an item for new busi-

ness was suggestions for the entertainment for our Dec. 3 Christmas Party at 6:30 in the fellowship hall. We agreed for

Tammy to ask Beth, Angela and Kim McGowan to provide music for this.

We were then given a report on our Christmas box balance after tonight’s offering. Brenda Huffman, our CWF Treas-

urer gave an update on the balance in the CWF Treasury. She reported before this meeting, we gave a love offering to

Kim Jones, our speaker for Woman’s Day. Also, we gave $100 to our Youth Bingo. At tonight’s meeting, we agreed to

give a monetary gift to a family in our neighborhood, who has a member with cancer.

Our next meeting’s date is Sept. 11 with Sylvia Hall, as hostess. We encourage ALL LADIES to please join us. You will

be a blessing to God and us. Hopefully, you also will receive a blessing.

After delicious refreshments served by Brenda Pike, our meeting was closed with Peggy giving our closing prayer.

S.T.A.R.S. News!

The STARS played Bunco and had an ice cream bar on Sunday, August 12. There were approximately 20 in attendance.

Great fun and fellowship was had by all! This month we are planning a trip to Myrtle Beach, Broadway at the Beach on

Saturday, September 29. There is a sign-up sheet across from the office and in the vestibule. Please sign up so that we

can have an accurate count to be able to plan accordingly. We are planning to depart from the Church by 8:00 a.m. and

return by 4:00 p.m.

Samaritan Shoebox Brenda Huffman

ALL THINGS GREAT AND SMALL

One is a very small number; unless, of course, it stands before the mighty word “million.” The number “one” seems insignificant unless you are talking about what God can do with “one.”

So when you see a child sitting in a trash heap in Guatermala, remember—that one child was created by God who values that little soul worth more than silver and gold. In fact, the Bible says that one soul is worthy of the priceless blood shed by the Savior of the world.

One person all alone can easily be overlooked, until you consider this: “It is the same in Heaven,” Jesus said when looking for one lost coin or one lost lamb, “there is rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner whose heart is changed, through repen-tance,” Luke 15:10.

Many ask, “Why a shoebox?” Try this on for size: “How beautiful . . . are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation” Isaiah 52:7.”

Shoes in a shoebox don’t get very far, so why not step up to the challenge? Find that shoebox collecting dust way back in the closet, dump the shoes out and fill it up, wrap it up, cover it with prayer and walk it into a post office or partnering church and send it to Operation Christmas Child. Your shoebox can travel to places you will probably never go. It can wind up at the feet of a little child who is looking down, when he or she needs to be looking up. Through a simple shoebox, you can send good news---the Gospel of Jesus Christ---to a little one who may have never heard His name. Will your feet symbolically carry the Good News to the least of these? If so, you have just discovered the heart of Operation Christmas Child.

Taken from “Operation Christmas Child, A Story of Simple Gifts” By Franklin Graham and Donna Lee Toney

“One” starts with you. One shoebox, one t-shirt, one pair of flip flops, one toothbrush, one pack of crayons, etc. One can equal a whole shoebox of essential items to fill a shoebox for one child in need. Shop for the items on the Samaritan Shoebox calendar of items to fill a shoebox. Bring the items in to one of the two drop off locations (vestibule or fellowship hall) at the church. You can help make our Samaritan Shoebox Ministry the best ever. Be the hands and feet of Jesus.
