West Valley Central School District Newsletter 6 June 2018
I can’t believe that June is here already. Each year seems to go by faster than the last.
Our young children keep us running and pretty soon, they are out on their own. You bring
them here for Pre-K and before you know it they are preparing for graduation. You can’t help
but wonder where has the time gone?
Our annexation study completed by Dr. William Silky will be presented to the public on
June 21st. I originally thought they were coming on May 21st, but I was mistaken. I hope eve-
ryone can attend that evening and hear what the experts have to say about our options for the
future of our school. The results are important for the whole community, whether you have
children, grandchildren or are a town resident.
One of the great advantages of a small school is that our faculty and staff have the
pleasure of thirteen years of seeing and working with your child. Thirteen years to prepare
them for life after high school. We can’t help but be proud of the young adults that they have
become and we will miss them, but we will look forward to hearing about their new adventures
and remind them that they can never go back in time, but they can always come home.
Thanks to our students for another great year. Thanks to our faculty and support staff
for everything they do for our students. Thanks to our bus drivers for getting them to and from
school safely every day. Thanks to the cleaners, maintenance staff, secretaries, principal and
everyone who provides the important services that keep our children safe and sound. Thanks to
parents for sending us your most prized possessions to watch over each day. I also want to
thank our community for continuing to support our school. West Valley is a wonderful place to
get an education.

West Valley senior Edward Thiel who is enrolled
in the Natural Resources class at the Ellicottville

Equipment Operation category at the state
SkillsUSA competition held in Syracuse, NY, on
April 26. SkillsUSA is a career and technical
organization serving more than 36,000 high
school and college students. It prepares students
for leadership in the world of work and
emphasizes technical excellence, character and
community service.
Congratulations Edward!

Yes it is June, but not yet time to celebrate the end of the year as
we still have a couple of very important weeks of school left.
Students in grades 9-12 will be taking their respective Regents
exams beginning on June 5th with the administration of the new
Global Regents exam and will continue on from June 12th-20th. Our 7th and 8th grade students
will again be taking their core subject exams during the morning session in the first week of
Regents exams. Additionally our 4th and 8th grade students will complete their state
assessments in Science on June 4th.
Throughout June our elementary students will be attending a number of field trips that
will engage them in learning experiences that are connected to their grade level curriculums.
The field trips our students are attending range from the Darien Lake Science Day to the
Buffalo Botanical Gardens. 7th and 8th grade students will also be traveling to the Rochester
Museum of Science and George Eastman House.
The end of the school year is also a time to reflect and celebrate the achievements of our
students throughout the year. Congratulations, to our top five seniors. You can read a brief on
each student in this newsletter. On Thursday, June 7th we will host our annual Academic
Awards Banquet for students in grades 7-12. In addition to these celebrations, there is also an
opportunity to see the growth and development of our Music program at our spring Band
Concert on June 8th. I am looking forward to seeing you at many of these events.
As this is our last newsletter edition for the 2017-2018 school year I want to express
how proud I am of our students, parents, staff, Board of Education and community for making
this a successful year. The success of our students throughout their time at West Valley Central
will be most evident at our High School graduation ceremony on June 23, 2018 at 1:00 pm in
our Auditorium. I am already looking forward to the start of a new school year, but before we
get back to work in September please have a safe and joyful summer!

SkillsUSA State Competition Results
West Valley Central School was well represented at the SkillsUSA
State Competition, which was held on April 26th at the state fair-
grounds in Syracuse. The WVCS students earned the right to go to
the state competition based on their scores at the local level of
SkillsUSA competition at Alfred State College. The students
learned and perfected their crafts with the help of the classes they
take at the Ellicottville BOCES Center. The students had the oppor-
tunity to interact with students from all over New York State, and
observe the different competitions. Senior Cheyanne Folts competed
in Crime Scene Investigation. Senior EJ Thiel competed in Precision
Heavy Equipment Operation placing 2nd in the State. Junior Brandon
Blackmon competed in Carpentry. Michael Boberg audited the Precision Heavy Equipment
competition. Junior Becca Smith competed in the culinary arts competition and advanced to the
final round. All of our students were excellent competitors. Congratulations to the students,
their families, and their BOCES programs for an awesome accomplishment.

The HeARTbeat of West Valley
My how the year has flown by! It has been a particularly cold school year, so
Photography students took full advantage of the breaks of sun by going on a field trip to
Thunder Rocks at Allegany State Park. They focused on landscape photography while enjoying
some of the local scenery. Sixth graders have been working hard on a cube painting, focusing
on value, while 4th graders have been learning about Huichol culture and yarn painting. The
Huichol are an indigenous group of people from different parts of Mexico. They create these
beautiful, vivid, and colorful artwork made from yarn and small beads. Their designs are very
intricate and often include symbols and stories. Our 4th graders created their own yarn paintings
either depicting a story or using symbols.
Our Celebrity Artist is second grader Karly Otto. Her
favorite food is steak and her favorite color is teal. She wants
to be a hair stylist and loves swimming. Her favorite book is
Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. The two turtles
seen here are by Karly.
Also shown are our
preschoolers, proudly presenting
their Mother’s Day iris prints.
West Valley’s District Wide Art Show turned out to be
fabulous, showcasing the talent of our student body. We
hope to continue this every year, building the event and
adding activities. The art department is very proud of the
progress our students have made this year and we look forward to next school year! We wish
you a fun-filled and safe summer!

Our P.A.R.P. (Parents As Reading Partners) Kickoff was held on May 7th with our
Elementary teachers participating in the “Mexican Mayhem” Show. The teachers were timed to
match up Spanish words with colored flowers and numbers, they had to put a Sombrero puzzle
together and participate in a dress-up race. The advanced Spanish class did a great job with
Spanish commercials in between the playing of the games. Then our two weeks of Fiesta
activities began with: dress-up days, finding “nacho” your favorite book to donate, and
‘Taco’ ‘bout a good book where kids filled in a taco with the favorite title of a book and added
it to the taco truck bulletin board.
Our Fiesta Family Reading Night was on May 9th with Senorita Forster reading us some
great stories while the children snacked on Nacho chips and cheese. We made a Mexican
mobile, decorated wooden maracas, and scratched off Mexican designed ornaments. Our big
event, the “Fiesta Carnival” was on May 18th where students received tickets for each night of
reading, played a variety of carnival games, and won a prize every time! Students also received
popcorn and cotton candy.
We would like to thank the West Valley Teachers Association for providing the funds
for all the carnival supplies. A special thanks to all the teachers, staff, students and parents for
all your support through the year and we look forward to another successful reading year next
year. Gracias!
