A monthly publication of Living Faith Lutheran Church
Finding Faith … Building Faith ... Living Faith August 2019
Volume #4, Issue #8
Fed by God’s Word and led by the Holy Spirit, we gather together as a community of faith,
to proclaim God’s love by ministering to our congregation, community and world.
A Message from Pastor Chad
I have to tell you, I really love the
Living Faith mission of this church
community: Finding Faith, Build-
ing Faith, Living Faith!
This is about not just connecting
with God, but the deeper pur-
pose, which is about helping to
make the world a better place… in the name of
God.
I’ve been here just over six months now. In this
time, I’ve had a good start in getting to know half
a year of the seasons of life here. I’ve had a
chance to work through a 2-polar vortex winter,
and some pretty hot weeks of summer so
far. More importantly, I’ve also come to learn
more faces, more names (Thank you all for being
patient with me! Name tags do help... not just me,
but all new people!) and more activities.
I’ve worked through a season of Lent, and a won-
derful Easter day and season. Neighborhood
Camp just finished, and I had a chance to be a
part! There’s a lot of work that people here do to
connect with the community; from Knapp Ele-
mentary School, to the ladies that sew/quilt for
others, to those that work with the food pantry,
to the wonderful people involved with the elder-
ly here, to the Altar Guild, to those involved with
the AA group… there are just so many people
that willingly give of themselves for the benefit
of others, of the community!
This is all part of the Mission of find-
ing, building and living faith! It’s cer-
tainly clear that you all – the people
of Living Faith – are part of a commu-
nity with a long history of making the
world a better place. That’s what this
“faith” stuff is really all about! It’s
about acting, working, helping, giv-
ing, praying for, and lifting up, hope
and light in a world that needs this more and
more.
With all this in mind, with the help of our leaders,
this Fall we’ll work through a year of taking time
to be more conscious about this call to Faith. A
time to “Renew and Refresh”.
We’ll take time to consciously look at different
aspects of faith. We’ll take more time to renew
our faiths, to refresh our faiths, to listen for the
Spirit in our journey together.
I’ve shared before that things are changing
around us. This is an understatement! There’s a
lot of change, but this doesn’t have to be a thing
to fear! This year we’ll be leaning into trust in
God; what it looks like now-a-days, and what it
feels like. What would you say if I told you that
the God that created the Universe is with
you? And what would you say if I told you this
God is calling us to live well in the world - without
fear, without anxiety?
We’re still called to help make the world a better
place (even if it’s just our small part of it. )

News from the Council
Council President’s Corner
Anyone remember Nat King Cole’s hit “Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer?” I pray
that you have had or will have some of those kinds of days to enjoy with family and friends.
The office staff always hopes things will slow down during the summer with maybe a few
“lazy days” to have some catch up time but so far the days have been on the “crazy side”
and here we are already looking to plan for our Fall Into Spring programming.
The Council is excited to let the Holy Spirit guide us as we “Renew & Refresh” our faith together and all
that it means to each of us to make a difference in this world and community. We hope to focus on renew-
ing all the ministries we have in place and refreshing ourselves with perhaps some new opportunities and
experiences. God is in our midst in the presence of the Holy Spirit. Let us all open our hearts and minds and
in answer to Pastor Chad’s question… AMEN, AMEN, AMEN!
Wishing you blessings each & every day, Vicki

This & That
Did You Know? Have You Noticed? - The Bridal Wreath along the east side of the building was just
amazing this spring! The bushes were loaded with huge and beautiful blossoms that cascaded from top to
bottom truly living up to their given name. With all flowering bushes, pruning is necessary to their growth
and we are thankful to Dianne Bertelsen for generously donating the talents of her personal gardener to
get the job done as well as taking out some overgrown bushes in one of the front planters. Thank you
Dianne for your generosity. God bless!
Backpacks for Knapp School - This year we will be filling new backpacks with personal
care items as Racine Unified will be supplying the schools with needed school supplies.
Backpacks will be available at both campuses on Sunday, August 4. A list of suggested items
(deodorant, feminine products, toothbrushes and toothpaste, lotion, shampoo, soap, socks,
underwear and boys and girls jogging pants) will be included with the backpacks. Please re-
turn by Sunday, August 25 so that we can deliver to Knapp on Monday, August 26. Thanks
in advance for supporting our partnership with Knapp Elementary. We are blessed to be a part of their
community!
Noisy Offering - The July Noisy offering went to Hospice Alliance, a ministry that ded-
icates their time and resources to providing hospice care and palliative care to those
with a serious illness. August’s Noisy Offering will be in support of Outreach for Hope.
Hospitality Ministry Team (aka The Welcome Wagon) We are still looking for some folks to work togeth-
er as a team on ways to welcome guests and new members in a loving, inclusive and caring way. A great
way to use your creative talents and let our visitors and new members know that we are happy and
blessed with their presence! Please contact Vicki Siefert at 262-634-4154 to learn more. Thanks!
National Night Out: Tuesday, August 6 - Please join us at the biggest neighborhood
party of the season - National Night Out! We have an awesome team of Pat & Mike
Ertl, Miranda Widmar, Helen Zelinger, Joy Webb, Vicy Arnold and Vicki Siefert who will
be working with volunteers from Knapp School to organize the event. There will be
food, games, music and lots of fun and fellowship. This is the perfect opportunity to
gather with friends and neighbors! We are still in need of large salads, baked beans,
desserts and help all around.
Attention All Students! - Scholarship applications are now available in the church office and are
due by September 1. Attending a Lutheran College is no longer necessary to be considered for a
scholarship. Any questions? Please contact Tom Siefert at 262-989-6154 or the church office at
262-637-5671.
Rally Day - Sunday, September 15 - Plans are in the making for our Kick Off of fall activities at Living
Faith, including the beginning of Godly Play Sunday School at both campuses.
Member Care Needs You! - It could be just a little visit, maybe a ride to an appointment, running an
errand or picking up groceries, or even providing a meal or special treat! It’s all about caring for our Living
Faith family in their time of need while recovering from an illness or surgery or perhaps the loss of a loved
one. Please prayerfully consider being a part of this very special ministry and give Alma Vacek a call today
at 262-681-1738 or sign up on the long yellow sheet in the Weekly Journey.

Neighborhood Camp Recap
Racine Neighborhood Camp at Living Faith was a success
this summer. Over 50 children were enrolled and came at
least once. We held a steady number of about 35 campers
each day.
The campers enjoyed visiting the Safari Lake Geneva
Park. They had the opportunity to feed the animals as
they walked right up to the wagon! Our last field rip was
to the Milwaukee Public Museum. They watched star gaz-
ing and learned about the moon landing 50 years ago.
The campers participated in numerous enrichment activi-
ties and most importantly they read every day. We partic-
ipated in the Barnes n Noble summer reading program.
Campers read a total of 40 books.
We thank Living Faith for providing a safe place for camp-
ers during the day and providing healthy meals!
~Maribel Madrid & Susan Appleton
Neighborhood Camp
Thank You to everyone who helped in the kitchen or donated items for the food service during Neighborhood Camp. I appreciate all of you more than you will ever know!! ~ Karin Langlois
Socks & Undies & Jogging Pants Sundays - The last Sunday of each month has been
designated to collect socks, undies and jogging pants for Knapp School. Please look for
the donation box in the Narthex at the East Campus and at the Welcome Table at the
West Campus.
Meatloaf Ministry - A big thank you to all our members who helped to provide meatloaf meals to those
recovering from hospitalization or just in need a warm meal. Members provide the food, we put them to-
gether and wait for a call that there is a need. If you'd like to be involved in the "meat loaf" ministry call
the church office at 637-5671. It's a definite way to be involved in our church and let our members know
we care.
JOY – Just Older Youth (50 Something & Older) - Do you enjoy playing games,
having good conversations and “doing lunch?” Well, then JOY is for you! We
have a planned activity/game that begins at 11am but you are very welcome to
play a game/cards of your choice as well either before or after lunch. Please join
us on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 10:30am in the Parlor. Any questions? Just give Vicki
Siefert a call at 262-634-4154. Thanks and hope to see you there! (Please note: JOY will not be gather-
ing on Wednesday, August 7.)

August Ministry Leaders
July AIM (All in Mission) Presentation
The June AIM Offering came to $413.79 which was approved by the Council to be designated for the
ELCA Neighborhood Camp program. As of this printing, camp has completed its 5 weeks and if you hap-
pened to be in the building when in session, you will no doubt have noticed there was “lots” of action going
on!
The May Noisy Offering of $260.38 was designated for “Hope Away From Home”, a ministry that dedi-
cates their time and resources to provide a safe and loving environment and living facility for those with
mental illness.
The “Fix It Campaign & Fundraiser” continues with a Grand Total of $7,520.13 as of July 2nd!!! Yahoo &
thank you! Re-keying the building has been approved by the Council with careful consideration being
taken of who needs keys and to what particular spaces; several plumbing issues have been completed and
the lower level hallways, classrooms and food pantry
floors have been stripped and waxed. No other major
projects have been approved thus far but lots of small
projects have been taken care of. You can be assured that
we will keep in touch and let you know what the future
plans are as the funds come in!
Thank you for your generous donations to both the AIM
and Noisy offerings and the Fix It Campaign!
Together, Living Faith is reaching out and making a differ-
ence in the community, the neighborhood and our con-
gregation!

Outreach/Volunteer Opportunities
Living Faith Tech Team
Here is your chance to use your technical skills and knowledge! We need peo-
ple to help operate the screen for announcements, etc. Training will be provid-
ed at your convenience. We are also looking for someone who likes to do Pow-
erPoint presentations and could put our announcements on a USB flash drive
to be used by the Tech Teams at both campuses. Please contact Vicki Siefert 262-634-4154 to learn more
about this opportunity.
FaithWorks Food Pantry
While every donation is greatly appreciated, monetary donations go further
than food donations. Checks can be made out to “FaithWorks Food Pantry”;
you will still get credit on your contributions statement. That said, all food do-
nations are welcomed. Volunteers are needed during operating hours
(Tuesdays 1:00-3:00pm and Thursdays 6:00-8:00pm.) Volunteers are also
needed to package produce and bakery on Tuesdays from 10:30am to 12:30pm. Please sign up on the long
yellow sheet in the weekly bulletin, or talk to Margaret Robinson or June Klingbeil if you are interested.
It’s Time to Gather Items for Lutheran World Relief Baby Care Kits
A Baby Care Kit contains the following new or gently used items in sizes 6 – 24 months:
• 2 cotton t-shirts
• 2 gowns or sleepers (without feet, PJ top/pants sets can be substituted)
• 2 receiving blankets (cotton, flannel, or lightweight yarn, up to 52”)
• 4 cloth diapers (flat fold preferred)
• 1 jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt with hood, OR include a baby cap
• 2 pairs of socks
• 1 hand towel
• 2 bath size bars of gentle soap (in original wrapping)
• 2 diaper pins or large safety pins
*We need the clothing items & diapers the most.*
To quote the Lutheran World Relief website: “A Baby Care Kit from LWR is like a promise. It says to that
baby, ‘Your needs will not be neglected by this world. You matter to us.’ Sending Baby Care Kits provides
encouragement by welcoming these little ones into an international community that cares.
Baby Care Kits are distributed as part of emergency and relief efforts, and they are also given out as part of LWR health initiatives to encourage women to seek prenatal care. One such initiative in Mali provided training for local prenatal health care workers, who were given Baby Care Kits to distribute when they as-sisted with births. These kinds of programs help more babies in rural, poor areas receive a healthy start in life.”
You can bring any of the needed items on Sunday and leave them in the marked box in the narthex. Or, you can also sponsor a Baby Care Kit for $15, and we will purchase the needed items. Please mark any offering given for this purpose “Baby Care Kit.”
Thank you for your support of people in crisis around the world!!

Rebekah Circle
The Rebekah circle meets on the
second Wednesday of the month in
the parlor at 9:15 am. We engage in
a Bible Study from the Gather Mag-
azine published by the Women of
the ELCA leading us to lively,
thought-provoking sessions each
month. We would love to have new
people join us. Call the office at 262
-637-5671 or Joy Webb 262-639-

Dorcas Circle
The Dorcas Circle gathers the second Monday of the month September through June at
1pm in the Parlor. We just finished a book study and discussion on “When Bad Things
Happen to Good People” and in the fall will begin “The Mission Table.” Writer Stephen
Bouman invites us – challenges us - to be a church with high expectations of the Holy Spir-
it. He assumes the Holy Spirit is not done with us yet.” We welcome everyone to join us!
Please contact Alma Vacek 262-681-1738 to hear more about it. Hope to see you there.
Men’s Breakfast & Book Study
The men's breakfast group started meeting regularly in 2017. Since then the group has
read and discussed a number of books; "Twelve Ordinary Man" by John MacArthur,
"Luther’s Small Catechism," "When Bad Things Happen to Good People" by Harold Kush-
ner, excerpts from "The Business of Heaven" by C.S. Lewis and "The Five People You Meet
in Heaven" by Mitch Albom.
The group is not meeting during the summer, but will resume their first and third Thursday
7:30 meeting at Annetta's Café in the fall. If you are interested in joining them contact Cliff
Vacek at 262-681-1738 and he will have a copy of their next planned book ("The Next Person You Meet in
Heaven" by Mitch Albom) available for you.

News from the Crazy Scrip Lady!
“It’s summertime, and the livin’ is easy…”
Can you believe it? It’s already August and it’s time to buy school
supplies! Cards are available for local and national retailers including
Target, Office Depot, Walmart and many, many more. Retailers set aside a
certain percentage of their profits for charitable giving, and they often pre-
fer to give that money to causes supported by their customers. SOMEONE will get those charitable dol-
lars from the retailers – why not help make that money come to Living Faith to support our ministries?
Need your SCRIP right away? We keep the cards listed in the left hand column on the front page of the
order form in stock in limited quantities – first come, first served. Need a small gift? We stock a number of
cards in denominations of $10 (there are even a few $5 cards available.)
To get your SCRIP at the East Campus, see Dick Langlois at the SCRIP table before the 9:00 service or at
coffee hour. At the West Campus, see June Klingbeil. You can also pick up an order form and call Karin at
672-0635 or email her at [email protected] to place an order.
Sundaes on Monday
An Afternoon with Laura Ingalls Wilder - Monday, October 14, 1:30pm in the East Campus Parlor
Please mark your calendars now and plan to join us as our favorite performer
Jessica Michna brings to life the story of Laura Ingalls Wilder in “The Road to the
Little House.” How did Laura’s life really evolve? What motivated her to put her
experiences on paper?
A $5 donation is being asked to help cover the speaker fee as well as an invita-
tion to bring a new or gently used children’s book. All books collected will be
given to Knapp Elementary to enrich and grow their library. Please invite your
family and friends for a delightful afternoon followed by “A Make Your Own
Sundae Bar” with all the fixings! Reservations can be made by calling the office
at 262-637-5671 or filling out the long yellow sheet in the Weekly Journey.

It’s just that things are a bit different today compared to yesterday. But, you know
what? That’s okay!
It’s okay. God is with us… still. Let’s Renew and Refresh together. Let’s remember together. Let’s remind
each other again. Let’s keep listening for the voice of God together. Let’s continue to join all the different
communities in Racine… in this Synod… in this state… in this world… to help make this world of God a bet-
ter place... in the name of this Living God! Let’s continue to find, build, and live our faiths together- however
that looks, and wherever that is! Can I get an “Amen”?!

TerraCycle Update
Focus: Oral & Personal Care Program
Each and every year, the products we use every day to make our bodies clean, our teeth
bright and shiny, and keep us smelling fresh, end up being thrown away after use and
ultimately end up in landfills. Tom’s of Maine (a pioneer in environmental stewardship
since 1970) and Colgate have partnered with eco-innovator TerraCycle® to provide a
second life for empty and used toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, floss containers,
mouthwash bottles, soap packaging, and antiperspirant and deodorant containers.
Together we can convert these would-be waste materials into fun and unique products!
Oral & Personal Care Program accepted waste: ANY brand of toothpaste tubes, tooth-
paste caps, floss containers, mouthwash bottles, mouthwash caps, deodorant containers and caps, soap
packaging, and toothbrush and toothpaste tube outer packaging. Please note: This program does not
accept aerosol deodorant cans.
Please Remember: We can ONLY ACCEPT THE ITEMS WE FOCUS ON in these updates.
NO empty water bottles! NO miscellaneous plastic packaging! These other recyclable items should be
put in your recycle bin at your home. Thank You!
Changes Are Coming … Gradually
Thank you to everyone who has been collecting and bringing in the Box Tops for Educa-
tion symbols. Please keep bringing them in when you find them on packaging. Eventually,
the Box Tops program will become digital-only. Over the summer you’ll see some partici-
pating brands begin to change their packaging from a physical Box Tops clip to the new “No More Clip-
ping” Box Tops icon.
“No More Clipping” means just what it says – we can’t turn in that symbol for credit. When you see this
symbol, you have 2 choices: 1. Follow the directions for choosing Knapp School to receive the credit at
BTFE.com & download the Box Tops app to your smart phone, OR 2. Bring your receipt to church just like
you used to bring the Box Tops symbols and Karin Langlois will make sure Knapp gets the credit for you.
As an added plus, during the transition, Box Tops for Education will award credit for
both ways of collecting.
Questions? Contact Karin Langlois: 262-672-0635
Fix It Campaign & Fundraiser
Thank you again for all your donations to the “Fix It
Campaign and Fundraiser!” Our total as of this
writing is $7,720.13!
As we have mentioned, it will take time to complete
all the projects that are needed as we have prom-
ised to only do what we can with the funds on hand.
This means that it will be an on-going effort. Dona-
tions will always be welcomed and encouraged.
Additional Fix It Campaign envelopes are located
at the entrance of each campus and our plan is to do
some fundraising to supplement your donations.
Please let us know what great fundraising ideas you
have and would be willing to help with. Fundraisers
can be fun and a great time for fellowship!
As we promised, the Council is taking careful con-
sideration of projects needing attention and will
keep you posted on further progress. Please let us
know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks, Blessings and Peace! Vicki.
