microGLEIT® DCP and DF series Defined friction values and corrosion protection

microGLEIT® is the leading supplier of dry film lubricants for fasteners. Intensive research and development activity and years of practical experience with products and processes have yielded a wide range of reliable ‘friction adjusters’.

Lubricants on threaded fasteners are essential for adjusting the coefficient of friction to desired values and limiting the standard deviation of those friction values. This statement is true independent of the tightening technology used.

microGLEIT® DF dry films are mostly water-based lubricant systems; they contain special lubrication polymers and some additives such as PTFE or waxes.

After application, these dry films build thin, transparent layers with a typical thickness of 1 to 3 µm.

For fasteners of all kinds, this thin layer warrants a defined, constant coefficient of friction in the range of µtotal = 0.08 to 0.16, depending on application method and product type. Friction values are measured according to official standards such as DIN EN ISO 16047.

The range of the DF product series covers the full spectrum of design, surface and application requirements of threaded fastners.

microGLEIT® DCP sealing products are a direct extension of the proven DF series. In addition to excellent lubricating properties, the DCP series also provides excellent surface protection. microGLEIT® DCP sealants have been specially developed for coating bulk and rack parts in the galvanic plating industry.

DCP products are a novel combination of organic-mineral-silicate-based sealants and high-quality lubricants. DCP sealants provide a thin topcoat (<2 µm) with superior performance.

DCP sealants are suitable as a topcoat on all known surfaces of screws, nuts and other fastener components with galvanic surfaces, such as:

- phosphating- zinc plating, including all chromate coatings

(yellow, blue, black or olive)- zinc-nickel and zinc-iron layers- zinc-flake coatings- etc.

microGLEIT DCP and DF series Applicationprocess details

Process ConsiderationsThe following pages contain information relating to the application of DF lubricants and DCP sealants, which are used for a variety of threaded fasteners.

High layer quality is determined by the interaction between good product selection and the right process technology – ideally synergies can be achieved by matching the product, application process and mechanical element.

On the following pages, data gained from practical experience with products and procedures are presented.

Advice on coating technology, handling precautions, details of bath care, and maintenance of the equipment should help achieve a consistently high quality of coating – and as a result, define friction values with low variance.

This brochure does not replace product-specific instructions for use. microGLEIT sliding films and sealants of the DF- and DCP-series are mainly used for bulk coating of:

- screws of all types,- nuts,- various threaded special parts.

In some cases, the products are also used for the partial coating or internal coating of components.

The products are usually supplied as a concentrate and, depending on the product and application specs, they will be diluted with water before use.

Lubricants are generally used with a mixing ratio of 1:1 and higher (lubricant : water).

Sealants (topcoatings) are usually used as delivered.

Coating process

Dip-Spin-Coating The most frequently used, best-practice coating method is the ‘dip-spinning

method’. The medium is located in a dipping tank inside the centrifuge, or the parts in the screen basket are flooded with the medium.

In both cases, the parts in the centrifuge are wetted with the coating agent and subsequently the excess liquid lube is centrifuged. The centrifugal forces must be adjusted to appropriate empirical values or on the basis of previous experiments.

If scooping parts are to be coated, a centrifuge with a reversing operation and/or a pivoting device is an advantage.

If possible, the parts to be coated should be dry and preheated before beginning the procedure. The residual heat of the parts from previous process steps can possibly be utilized.

- Experience has shown that a part temperature of +30°C to +45°C is very advantageous to increase the coating quality and to further reduce fluctuations in friction coefficients and their standard deviation.

Drying can be carried out in the same working zone (warm air supply), or the parts can be dried in a continuous or chamber furnace. The chamber furnace must be partially operated in ‘exhaust air mode’ in order to discharge the water vapor.

When handling the parts within the process chain, care must be taken to ensure that the drop heights of the parts are appropriate and that the parts are not damaged excessively during the coating process.

Alternatively, the ‘drum coating’ method could be used – although the process is efficient, it is less popular than ‘Dip-Spin-Coating’.

Our team of experts is at your disposal to assist you with the exact adjustment of the individual parameters.

Bath preparation Equipment maintenance and storage

Bath PreparationThe coating medium is generally prepared with demineralized (de-ionized) water.

Measurement of the pH-value is mandatory:- When the coating bath is first established- 1 to 3 times a day (depending on throughput).

If necessary, the bath concentration must be corrected – depending on product and actual pH-value, citric acid, hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide solutions are used to reset the bath values. Further details can be found in the corresponding microGLEIT operating instructions.

Maintenance of the Equipment The bath container should be completely drained and cleaned after prolonged

use, and at least 2 - 4 times a year.

Depending on the throughput, the centrifuge baskets must be removed from the process and cleaned.

- Sandblasting (e.g., with Al-oxide 220) of the (dry) centrifuge basket is advised.

- Flaming the basket and subsequent high-pressure water spraying is also suitable.

- Likewise, stripping the lubricant layer in a heated lye is possible (e.g. Sodium hydroxide solution at +80°C).

Caution – observe the safety regulations! On contact, severe chemical burns are possible!

Storage All DF and DCP media are very frost-sensitive.

During winter, frost-proof transportation and warehousing must be ensured.

The products must always be stored in a frost-free, dry place.

Please carefully close the container after the product is taken out.

Bath maintenance

Maintenance of the Coating Bath After a prolonged downtime (1 - 2 working days), the surface of the bath

should be cleaned of floating dirt or residues. For this purpose, a ‘kitchen-sieve’, a mesh filter (‘stocking-’ or ‘screen-type’), a ‘Drehkopf’ paint strainer or another other suitable filter with a mesh width of approx. 120 μm (not smaller) to 240 μm can be used.

Before the first use of a new bath, the solution must be stirred thoroughly. After that, the medium must be stirred from time to time, at least 2 to 5 times a week.

- Paddle stirrers, cone agitators with max. 30-80 rpm, and slowly running hand agitators (depending on bath size) have all been proven to be suitable.

- Manual stirring by means of a suitable rod (paddle) is also possible.- It is important to avoid entrapped air (slow, laminar stirring) during the

stirring process in order to avoid foaming.

When the bath is not in use, it must always be covered to avoid evaporation and contamination.

Ideally, centrifugal media should not be fed back into the storage tank (use it once).

Automatic Filtration If automatic filtration is used, a slow-running diaphragm pump (no gear pump,

if possible) should be used for pumping – in this way, foam formation is largely minimized.

- Filter size approx. 120 to 240 μm

Foaming If foaming occurs during the coating process or through pumping, please

contact us as soon as possible.

We can send you a suitable defoamer for the product you are using.

Quality controlUV-Indicator

The UV-indicator (sensitive to UV-wave lengths from 340 to 380 nm) contained in the media does not allow for the control of coating quality. Also, the UV indicator can neither be used as a measure for layer thickness nor for the uniformity of the coating. It is only a YES / NO method indicating whether it is coated or not.

Solid Lubricant Content The solids content (active substance) is a central quality criterion for all

coating media of the DF and DCP series. The solids content in the medium, alongside with the defined parameters of the coating process, will result in the desired layer thickness on the parts.

Compliance with the specified dry residue level (for example, as determined by previous tests) must be checked regularly. Also, new solution preparations have to be checked before starting the coating process. The testing frequency depends on the product, the coating method and the throughput volume (relative to the bath size).

The dry residue test can be easily and accurately determined by means of a refractometer (note that this is not suitable for all media) or by means of a dry residue scale. This device is used by most customers to determine the dry residue and is well-proven in daily practice.

For more detailed information on the appropriate test method for your medium, please contact our service team.

When using a simple, sufficiently accurate scale, the concentration can be determined as follows:

PA = Weight of the samplePE = Weight of the residue after evaporation of the solvent TR = Dry residue in percent

The bath parameters ‘TR’ are adjusted according to the following formula (Mixing-Cross ‘MC’):

TRBath = Dry residue of sampleTRP = Dry residue of product (concentrate) KSetp = Set point of the bathQuantity added = bath-volume / parts bath * parts productFor TRBath > KSetp the value TRP has to be ‘0’ (water has to be added)
