1889 b~, Captain Ditlev Torm, announ-ced the start of a new service from portsin the U.S. Gulf to Mediterraneandestinations.

The first sailing, in the new everythree week service, will be the TORMTHYRA from Houston May 10.Discharging ports for the new serviceare Lisbon, Barcelona, Algiers, Vallet-ta (Malta), Beirut, Mersin, Port Saidand Alexanderia. Vessels will also callat Libyan port Benghazi and Marsa E1Brega subject to sufficient inducement.

Torm Lines, has over 25 years of ex-perience in regular service from Northand South Atlantic ports to theMediterranean.

Hellenic LinesOrders Two Ships

Hellenic Lines Limited announcedthat it has placed an order with SaseboHeavy Industries Co. Ltd. of Japan fortwo Roll on/Roll off and containercarriers with an option for anadditional two sister vessels.

The vessels, to be constructed inSasebo, will have the followingcharacteristics: 190.5 meters long by28.5 meters broad by 20.8 meters deep,with a total of 3100 running metersyielding a capacity of 250 X 40 ft.trailers or 110 containers of 20’ X 8’ X8’ and hoistable car-decks allowing thecarriage of 450 American cars.

The vessels will perform at 20.3knots. They will be equipped with 4twin sets of flush hatchcovers that,when conditions allow, enable the useof shore-based gantry cranes for fastercontainer operations. The vessels willbe able to discharge and load a full andcomplete cargo of trailers ! containers /cars/heavy lifts within 24 hours. Thisperformance is made possible by thevessels’ 7 meter wide stern slewingramp of 160 tons capacity and its in-ternal equipment of one ramp andthree elevators.

The entire project will cost HellenicLines $100 million.

Collections for calendar year1976 by the Treasury Department’sU.S. Customs Service increased by 19per cent over 1975, U.S. Commissionerof Customs Vernon D. Acree reported.

The totals were $5,390,361,849compared to $4,526,112,241 in 1975,an increase of $864,249,608.

Commissioner Acree noted that theCustoms Service returns some $16 tothe U.S. Treasury for every budgetdollar it spends in carrying out itsresponsibilities at the Nation’s 300 por-ts of entry.

Customs collections consist of dutyon imported goods (tourist purchasesas well as commercial shipments), ex-cise and other Federal taxes, forfeitedmerchandise, fines, and recoveries ofgovernment property.

ITC Completes TanksStephen W. Miles, president of Intercontinental Ter-

minals Company, announced the completion of the first sixof twelve 80,000 barrel capacity storage tanks at their DeerPark Terminal on the Houston Ship Channel.

These tanks will all have an internal floating roof designand will store a full range of petroleum and petrochemicalproducts. The total cost of the project is estimated at $5million and will be completed in early August.

Intercontinental Terminals Company, a Houston-basedcompany, is a liquid and dry bulk storage service companyfor chemicals, acids, heavy fuel oils, lubricating oils andother petroleum products.

Maersk Has New ServiceMaersk Line will inaugurate a monthly independent

Delta Offers LCL ServiceDelta Steamship Lines, Inc., is offering consolidated,

through bill of lading service for less-than-container load(LCL) quantities of breakbulk cargo to Guatemala City(Guatemala), San Salvador (El Salvador); San Pedro and Tegucigalpa (Honduras) and Managua (Nicaragua).

Delta, with LASH/Container vessels, is the first regularlyscheduled liner service from U.S. Gulf ports to institute thisthru bill of lading convenience for shippers/consignees, saidFred A. Lykes PlansTo Expand

Lykes Bros. Steamship Co., Inc. hasproposed to build or acquire fourSEABEE ships or roll-on/roll-off vancarriers for a new service.

Lykes has applied for an operating-differential subsidy for a new serviceon Trade Route 18 between U.S.Atlantic and Gulf ports and ports inSouthwest Asia from Suez to Burma,and Africa on the Red Sea, the Gulf ofAden and the Gulf of Aqaba. Lykes isalso requesting privilege calls on TradeRoute 10, between U.S. North Atlanticports and Portugal, Spain, AtlanticMorocco, and the Mediterranean. It isfor this service that Lykes proposed tobuild or acquire the additional ships.

The company would make as manyas 36 annual sailings on the proposedservice with its C3 and C4 freightersand its C5 partial containerships,provided that it may substitute onevoyage with a SEABEE barge carrierfor two voyages with conventionalvessels.

This service would be in addition tothe present service as well as thatproposed in Lykes’s application forlong-term renewal of its aDSagreement.
