Dressed as characters from their favourite stories, our students turned the school into a colourful celebration of everything literary. Thanks to all the parents for helping with costume design and to Mrs Moyle-Ross for organising the event. The fun does not stop at the Book Parade, with the focus now shifting to the Book Fair and further Education Week celebrations. On Friday, we invite families and friends to visit our open classrooms between 11.45am and 12.25pm. This will be followed by a special Education Week Assembly at 12.30pm which will feature the Stage 1 Choir and Dance Group and the Stage 3 Senior Dance Ensemble. The Book Fair will also be open in the library following the assembly. DEBATING The final debate for one of our teams, The Persuaders will take place against Lismore Heights this Friday, 31 July at 9.30am in our school hall. Parents are welcome to attend. This follows many months of training and events in which the students have excelled. After the gala day at our school earlier this term, we received the following feedback from one of the visiting teachers: “It was a pleasure to come to your school for the day and Bonnie and I both remarked on the excellent behaviour exhibited by all of the students in your school on the day.” Congratulations to Miss Eakin and the whole team. CLASS FEATURE - KT This term, KT is covering a Science unit of work called ‘Staying Alive’. The unit is an ideal way to link science with Literacy in the classroom. It provides opportunities for students to investigate the basic needs for survival of animals, including humans, and how their senses help them stay alive. We are developing an understanding of these basic needs and their importance through hands on activities. The students were very excited to visit the school chook pen and learn how to care for the chooks. We explored the area they live and learnt about the different foods they eat and how they are cared for.

As part of our unit, Kindergarten has purchased chickens to share between the five classes. We have an allocated day for each class to care for and feed the chickens and learn about their basic needs for survival. The students suggested ideas about how the class will take care of the chickens. We developed a mind map focusing on what we will keep the chickens in, where we will put the chickens in the classroom, what kind of food we will be feeding the chickens and how we will care for the chickens over the weekends.

We have been recording our work in a Science journal and setting up an information wall which will be used throughout the unit to collect and display information. We are recording observations of the chickens and how they are changing as they grow using photographs, descriptions and illustrations. We have linked our Science unit to our L3 session where students have engaged in the joint construction of texts and have produced excellent writing using describing words and simple punctuation.
