In 1884 Juan Francisco

Gamurrini discovered an ancient

manuscript in Confraternity of the

Laity Library in Arezzo, Italy. It

came to bring great benefits not

only to literature, but to the history

and liturgy of the Catholic Church.

Part of that manuscript corresponds

to a treaty of St. Hilary of Poitiers concerning the Mysteries

and the Hymns and the other part is a copy of S. XI of an

interesting book that was talked about, but that had been lost

over time: the Itinerary of the Pilgrim Egeria. This was a

virgin consecrated to God, because there wasn't yet actual

nuns. Originally from Galicia, Spain, she had enough time, a

lot of money and many influences, to take a three or four year

trip to the Holy Land and visit sites of the Old and the New

Testament. She kept a very pleasant and interesting journal

that speaks of, not only the Christian customs from that time,

between 381 and 384 AD, but also of how they celebrated the

most important holidays of Christianity in the Holy City of

Jerusalem. How interesting it is to ascertain in her memoirs

that what we celebrate today is the same as what the early

Christians celebrated, including the fact that we celebrate it

the same way.

She speaks of the celebration of the Presentation of

the Child Jesus to the temple. She tells us that they would

celebrate it forty days after they celebrated Christmas and

they did it by a procession of lights to remember that Jesus is

the light that gives light to the nations. They called this

holiday Hypapante, which in Greek means encounter.

As the celebration of the Magi from the East, and the

celebration of Baptism of Jesus, this event is also an

epiphany, ie, a manifestation of Jesus as the Messiah Savior

of the world. It is an encounter between Jesus and his Father

who lives in the temple of Jerusalem, it is an encounter with

the law of Moses in compliance with that same Act, and it is

an encounter with the depicted prophets in those two elders,

Simeon and Anna, who moved by the Holy Spirit, bear

witness to of Jesus' messianism. It is also a encounter with his

people, for who he will die on the cross, making a sword pass

through the soul of his Mother, the Virgin Mary, as the aged

Simeon declares her.

We continue to celebrate this holiday with a

procession with lighted candles, signs of Jesus, but to this

ancient custom we have added a Mexican touch by

presenting to the temple the image of the Child Jesus at

Christmas that we have cradled and we have laid in the

Nativity manger.

We love Jesus and worship signs surround the

beautiful image of the Child, that is why we give him

sponsors, we clothe him and celebrate with traditional

tamales. It is the joy of Christmas that remains in our hearts.

En el año de 1884 Juan Fran-cisco Gamurrini descubrió un manuscri-to antiguo en la Biblioteca de la Cofraternidad de Laicos en Arezzo, Ita-lia, que vino a traer grandes beneficios no sólo a la literatura, sino a la historia y a la liturgia de la Iglesia Católica. Parte de ese manuscrito corresponde a un

tratado de san Hilario de Poitiers sobre los Misterios y los Him-nos y la otra parte es una copia del S. XI de un interesante libro del que se tenía noticia, pero que se había perdido a través del tiempo: el Itinerario de la Peregrina Egeria. Ésta fue una virgen consagrada a Dios, porque todavía no había propiamente monjas, originaria de Galicia en España que tenía mucho tiempo, mucho dinero y muchas influencias como para hacer un viaje de tres o cuatro años a la Tierra Santa y a los lugares del Antiguo y del Nuevo Testamento. Tuvo la feliz ocurrencia de llevar un dia-rio, muy ameno e interesante, que nos habla no sólo de las cos-tumbres de los cristianos de ese tiempo, entre el 381 y el 384 después de Cristo, sino también de la forma en que celebraban las fiestas más importantes del cristianismo en la Ciudad Santa de Jerusalén. Qué interesante es comprobar en sus memorias que lo que hoy celebramos es lo mismo que celebraban los pri-meros cristianos y que, incluso, lo celebramos del mismo modo. Ella nos habla de la fiesta de la presentación al templo del Niño Jesús, nos dice que la celebraban cuarenta días después del día en que celebraban la Navidad y que lo hacían con una procesión de luminarias para recordar que Jesús es luz que alum-bra a las naciones. Llamaban a esta fiesta hypapante, que en griego significa encuentro. Como la fiesta de los magos de Oriente y la fiesta del bautismo de Jesús, esta fiesta es, también, una epifanía, es decir, una manifestación de Jesús como Mesías salvador del mundo. Es un encuentro de Jesús con su Padre que habita en el templo de Jerusalén, es un encuentro con la ley de Moisés en el cumpli-miento de esa misma ley, y es un encuentro con los profetas rep-resentados en aquellos dos ancianos, Simeón y Ana, que movidos por el Espíritu Santo dan testimonio del mesianismo de Jesús. Es también un encuentro con su pueblo, por el que morirá en la cruz, haciendo que una espada atraviese el alma de su Madre, la Virgen María, como le anuncia el anciano Simeón. Nosotros seguimos celebrando esta fiesta con una pro-cesión con velas encendidas, signos de Jesús, pero a esta an-tiquísima costumbre le hemos dado un tinte muy mexicano al llevar a presentar al templo la imagen del Niño Jesús que hemos arrullado en Navidad y que hemos acostado en el pesebre de nuestro nacimiento. Amamos a Jesús y rodeamos de signos de adoración su hermosa imagen de Niño, por eso le conseguimos padrinos, lo vestimos y hacemos fiesta con los tradicionales tamales. Es el gozo de la Navidad que permanece en nuestro corazón.

SAINT PHILIP OF JESUS FIRST MEXICAN SAINT

Fr. Jorge Román Philip was born in Mexico City in 1572. Though unusually frivolous as a boy, he took up a mercantile career, and went to the Philippines, another Spanish colony, where he led a life of pleasure. Later he desired to enter the Order of the Franciscans and was admitted at Manila in 1590. After some years it was determined that he was ready for ordination and sent to Mexico. He sailed on 12 July 1596, but a storm drove the vessel upon the coast of Japan. The governor of the province commanded on December 8 1596, the arrest of the Franciscans in the friary at Miako, now Kyoto. The friars were all kept prisoners in the friary until December 30, when they were transferred to the city prison. There were six Franciscan friars, seventeen Japanese Franciscan tertiaries and the Japanese Jesuit Paul Miki, with his two native servants. The ears of the prisoners were cropped on January 3 1597, and they were paraded through the streets of Kyoto; on January 21 they were taken to Osaka, and thence to Nagasaki, which they reached on February 5 1597. They were taken to a mountain near Nagasaki city, "Mount of the Martyrs", bound upon crosses, after which they were pierced with spears. The vesper of his death, Philip wrote the next letter to his Parents: Nagasaki, Japan. February 4, 1597 Dear parents and friends The night passes quickly. Tomorrow I will be executed on the cross, but I have no fear. My thoughts turn to you and my beloved country. Now that I am to receive the baptism of blood, I remember that I was baptized in the Cathedral of Mexico, and the times that I attended Mass in San Francisco Silversmiths. I regret the years I lost my looking for my desires , selfish and dissipated. Blessed be God who came to my aid and I realized that it was not worth living for that. I wanted to be a missionary, but now God rewards me before the trail granting me to give my life to prove my love. I regret not having returned to Mexico, even though for just one day, but I will return. I am sure I will return to tell everyone that true life which is worth living, is eternal life. On February 5, 1597 at the time he was to be executed on the cross and pierced with two spears in his sides, the maid in Mexico, seeing a fig tree full of figs, shouted exclaiming:

en 1572. Era de naturaleza inquie-ta y rebelde, de tal manera que an-

te cada travesura su Madre excla-

maba: ¨¡Ay, Felipe, Felipe! Dios te

haga un Santo¨. A lo que la sirvien-

ta comentaba: ¨¿Felipillo Santo?

Primero esta higuera da higos an-tes que éste sea Santo¨.

Durante su juventud, llevó

una vida relajada y de placeres. Su

Padre lo envió a Filipinas para

abrir una tienda de platería, lo cual aceptó con gusto, ya que esto le

daba la oportunidad de vivir de

manera libertina sin restricciones.

Sin embargo, Dios llama de la ma-

nera más inesperada y luego de

una buena noche de juerga, se dio cuenta que los placeres del mundo sólo le dejaban malestares y va-

ciedad, por lo que después de platicar con un Padre

Franciscano, ingresó a la orden y al término de unos

años, viajaba a México para ser ordenado Sacerdote,

pero el navío naufragó en las costas de Japón debi-do a una fuerte tormenta. Allí se unió a los Jesuitas

que Evangelizaban hasta que fueron arrestados y

conducidos al martirio. La víspera de su muerte,

escribió esta carta a sus padres:

Nagasaky, Japón. 4 de Febrero de 1597

Queridos padres y amigos La noche pasa rápida. Mañana moriré ejecutado en la cruz, pero no tengo miedo. Mi pensamiento vuela hacia ustedes y a mi patria querida. Ahora que estoy para recibir el bautismo de sangre, re-cuerdo que fuí bautizado en la Catedral de México, y las veces que asistí a Misa en San Francisco de Plateros. Lamento los años que perdí buscando mis apetitos, egoísta y disipado. Bendito sea Dios que vino en mi ayuda y comprendí que no valía la pena vivir para eso. Quise ser misionero, pero ahora Dios me premia antes del trabajo, concediéndome dar mi vida para probar mi amor. Lamento no haber vuelto a México, aún cuando apenas fue-se un día; pero volveré. Estoy cierto de que volveré para decir-les a todos, que la verdadera vida por la que vale la pena vivir, es la vida eterna. Paz y bien Fray Felipe de Jesús El 5 de Febrero de 1597 a la hora en que era

ejecutado en la cruz y traspasado por dos lanzas en

sus costados, la sirvienta en México, al ver la higue-ra llena de higos, dando gritos exclamó: ¨¡Felipillo es

Santo! ¡Felipillo es Santo!¨
