Set Induction
(10 minutes)
Introduction to the topic
1. Teacher present students a power point presentation with quick facts and statistics about marriage age in Malaysia to gain their attention.
2. Teacher asks students about a) what might have cause such a trend
b) in their opinion, when would they get married and why do they choose to respond that way
Teaching Aids:
Power Point Presentation
(10 minutes) Stretching exercise (optional).
Teacher starts with a stretching exercise
a) Ask students to choose, for example food that they love to eat. For each, ask them to compare it to another object and state why.
b) Ask students to be an object, a concept or an event. Ask them to “put themselves in the shoes” of that particular object, a concept or an event and say how it feels.
c) Juxtapose two conflicting qualities of an object, a living thing, a concept, or a man-made or natural phenomenon. Ask students to give their opinions about such compressed conflicts.

Teacher goes through the process of coming up with the character analysis of Anna by going through the procedure below.
a) revise with students their previous reading of the short story
b) distribute the graphic organizer/worksheet 1to students
c) by giving evidence from the story, ask students to describe Anna base on the following sub-topics:
- physical description- what do others say about the
character- feelings- actions
d) From the information gathered, ask students to suggest some direct analogy from the animal world that can describe Anna.
e) Discuss students’ suggestions and find a consensus among them on the best direct analogy for Anna.
f) Ask students to imagine being that animal and allow them to explore by asking them to:
- sympathize with the subject by imagining that it has human feelings.
- relate to the subject emotionally and subjectively
- mobilize the physical and psychological tensions of the subject
- apply factors of repetition and progression
- move subject to a new environment and adapt it to a different frame of reference
- move subject out of its normal environment
- transfer subject to a different

g) Base on the notes on the whiteboard, discuss with students - which 2 opposite words could
they pair up together and produce an integration of both qualities.
- ask students to connect different sensory modes
- ask them to fantasize surreal, preposterous, outlandish, bizarre thoughts
h) Base on the discussion above, ask students to come up with another direct analogy that best describes the compressed conflicts
i) Discuss students’ suggestions and find a consensus among them on the best direct analogy for Anna. State why they choose that analogy.
j) Teacher continues to reexamine the analogies to help students write an essay at the end of the worksheet to explicate their understanding of the interactions and relationships between Anna and the other characters.
Closure
(5 minutes)
Summary of the lesson
Teacher asks students to summarize what they have learnt in the class today.
Homework Worksheet 2 Base on the process of coming up with Anna’s character, students are to try to work on another character, i.e. David Amos by themselves first, before discussing them in the following class.
Enrichment Exercise
Instruct students to work on journal writing.
Teaching Aids:
(1 week) If you were Anna, what are you going to do the moment you realize that the fruit cake perfume is special? You may change the way the story is told and ended.
Students are to write their story in about 500 words.
