POTHE to host Lenten Retreat

A Lenten Encounter with Mercy

Sacred Heart Church Saturday, March 17,

11am to 3pm Calling all parishioners! We invite you to join Deacon Patrick Finn and Catherine Gallerizzo for a parish retreat to explore the transforming power

of mercy in the Sacrament of Confession. No matter what you have done, no matter how long you have been away, Jesus is waiting for you with open arms this Lent! We’ll gather in the Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, March 17 at 11am. The retreat will include time for prayer and Eucharistic Adoration. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confessions) will be available at the conclusion of the Retreat. Topics covered will include:

Where Are You? Have you ever felt lost and alone, isolated in guilt?

Like the Prodigal Son among the pigs, we know that we have sinned. But God won’t leave us there—he searches for us and runs to welcome us home in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

An Encounter with Mercy We are not defined by our mistakes. In

Confession, Jesus invites us to encounter his mercy and be healed by his love. When he tells us “Go and sin no more,” he also gives us the grace to do so.

Embraced in Mercy: The Rite Explained Whether you go to

Confession regularly or last went a decade ago, this session guides you step-by-step through the deeper meaning of every aspect of the Rite--what it is, why we do it, and how it impacts your life. Please register online at the parish website (www.pothe.org) or call the office, 847-6890. Cost will be $20 and will include lunch and a book. For more information, please contact Deacon Patrick (847-6885 or [email protected]).

Ladies, Set aside some time for God and yourself! A real Mother’s Day Gift. ACTS Retreat for Women May 10 to 13, 2018. An ACTS Retreat is a 3 day, 3 night parish-based retreat that offers parishioners the

opportunity to experience the love of Jesus Christ in a deep, profound way. ACTS Retreats are given by parishioners for fellow parishioners. This retreat begins on Thursday evening and ends on Sunday morning following the 10:30 AM Mass and Reception at Holy Martyrs Church. Register now on our website. ACTS has already impacted the lives of 14 POTHE parishioners. Below is a testimony from one such parishioner: “I am a cradle Catholic but had no concept of having a relationship with Jesus Christ until 5 years ago. However, a few years after that, I reached a block in my relationship. In the fall of 2016, I was invited to attend an ACTS retreat. Through that retreat, God's love and mercy filled my heart and soul. I became aware of the power and grace of God in my life and the meaning of Christ's suffering, death, and resurrection. This all led to a deepening of my faith, and I began developing a more intimate relationship with our Lord.” Do you ever wonder about the Catholic faith? Are you feeling a strange inner pull to look into the Church ? That spiritual longing is God drawing you back to Himself. God never forces; He only invites. Give Catherine a call at 847-6884 to start the conversation. Evening for Catechists & Youth Ministers on Thursday, March 22 Holy Martyrs from 6pm to 8:30pm (Light Supper at 6pm) $10 per person. For those interested, a Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Deeley at 5:30pm.FMI: contact Georgette at 553-9076 .

Grow your faith this Lent with Inspiring Books, CDs, and more ! Whether you are a believer, a skeptic, or something in between, prepare to be challenged by the logical arguments in this provocative and insightful book. “This book argues convincingly that the Resurrection actually occurred and that all the arguments against its historicity have fallen flat, including recent arguments from

the New Atheists.” Karl Keating, Founder, Catholic Answers Available in the Augustine Institute Kiosk in Narthex in all churches

Haiti - In a message from our sister parish in mid-February, Father Bertrand Dieuveille described a very busy community as the Lenten season began. The church was once again holding special services on Ash Wednesday and on the Fridays of Lent with procession of the Blessed Sacrament. The Meyer Pastor stated that young people were joining in church services and that he was ministering to 157 elderly and infirmed parishioners. The work of the parish center -- Cyvadier -- was continuing and a new senior nun arrived in February -- Sister Margaret. Father Dieuveille added his special invocation : Lent is a return to simplicity and it is simply a strong relationship to our benevolent God. I wish everyone a blessed Lent. I wish this for each and every one of you. Social Justice Commission Meeting: Thursday, March 8, 6:30 pm at Sacred Heart Rectory. Interested parishioners are invited to come and learn more about the work of this parish group.

Saints for Lent The Season of Lent is a wonderful time to reflect on the lives of the saints and how they came to answer God's call. Below you will find some of the saints whose feast days fall within the Lenten season. Pick up the Booklet “Lent with the Saints”, available at the AugustineKiosks at each church. Online reflections on the Saint of the day can be found at www.franciscanmedia.org

March 3 - Saint Katharine Drexel Saint Katharine Drexel left a life of

privilege to found the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, dedicating her life to the poor and establishing schools for Native and African American children.

March 4: Saint Casimir The son of the grand duke of Lithuania and king of Poland, Saint Casimir rebelled against his princely status, wore plain garments, and gave himself to Christ's poor and sick.

March 6: Saint Collette Born in France in 1381, St. Colette was a reli-gious reformer and follower of Saint Francis of Assisi, who founded 17 Franciscan convents and brought many others back to their original rule.

March 7: Saint Perpetua and Felicity Sts. Perpetua and Felicity were arrested and martyred for their belief in Christ, during the persecution of Emperor Septimius Severus. Perpetua was a young noblewoman and Felicity a slave, and at the time they were imprisoned, Perpetua was a new mother, and Felicity was eight months pregnant. Together, the two women supported each other in prison, both refusing to re-nounce their faith.

March 9: Saint Frances of Rome Saint Frances was known for her great charity during epidemics and civil war. She started a lay order of wom-en attached to the Benedictines, called the Oblates of Mary. They pledged to offer themselves to God and serve the poor.

March 16: Saint Abraham Kidunaia St. Abraham was a hermit who lived in sixth-century Syria. Although he preferred time in solitude, the bishop sent him to Beth-Kiduna to evangelize a pagan town. At first, he was rejected and dragged away, but he continue to preach and persist, and eventually, the townspeople came to know Christ.

March 17: Saint Patrick Although he is the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick was actually born in Roman Britain in the fifth century. When he was a teenager, he was captured and enslaved by Irish raiders. He escaped after six years but, later, felt called to return to the Irish people to evangelize what was then a pagan country.

March 18: Saint Cyril of Jerusalem St. Cyril lived at the time of the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ and threatened the Church. He would get caught up in the conflict and spend 16 years in exile. His writings, especially those designed for new Catholics, are considered treasures of the Church.

March 19: Saint Joseph St. Joseph, the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is known for his faithfulness and humility, ac-cepting the will of God even when he did not completely understand what was happening. Although the Gospels don't tell us a lot about Joseph, we know he was from the House of David and was a carpenter by trade.

March 20: Saint María Josefa of the Heart of Jesus Felt called to care for the sick and elderly, St. María Josefa of the Heart of Jesus founded the Institute of the Servants of Jesus in Bilbao, Spain, in 1871. She felt it was the calling of the sisters to accompany the sick "until the door of eternity."

March 23: Saint Toribio of Mogrovejo Born to a Spanish noble family, Saint Toribio was named Archbishop of Lima, Peru, in 1580. He traveled across the archdiocese visiting his people, often on foot and alone. He worked on reforming the clergy and wrote catechisms in native languages. He also helped the poor and defended the rights of the native people, and he founded the first seminary in the Americas.

March 26: Saint Margaret Clitherow During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, when Catholic Mass was outlawed in England, St. Margaret Clitherow hid priests in her home and secretly celebrated Mass there. She was eventually discovered and executed.
