2018In the latest global listing of contractors by

turnover, an apparently uneventful year in

total revenue terms is only part of the story

as several companies made satisfactory,

and sometimes spectacular, progress.

Less than the sum of its parts?

encouraging given the challenges faced by the industry in the previous 12 months. As ever the excitement was in the twists, turns and changing fortunes that brought this collection of global demolition contractors together.

POSITIONS 1 TO 10As night follows day, NorthStar leads the d&ri100. But for a second consecutive year, there is less of a gap than there had been 12 months earlier.

CEO Scott E State summed up

the year as follows: “During 2017 we focused our business mix towards large opportunities we had in the coal ash remediation space. In addition, emergency response from the unprecedented storm season diverted resources to those segments.”

The result was a decrease in turnover of more than $75 million, and the figure for 2019 will be eagerly awaited.

Just as the top company stayed the same, so did the chasing pack.

Keltbray retained second place, increasing turnover by close to $50 million and more than halving the differential between NorthStar and itself in the process, with demolition playing a leading part in an overall turnover increase for the group of 15%.

Erith Contractors, in third, celebrated 50 years in business during 2017 and marked its progress with a series of high-profile demolition jobs in its native south east of England – including the World Demolition Award-winning Marble Arch place in London – and the similarly honoured bulk

A t first glance the d&ri100 for 2018 echoed its predecessor of

pharmaceutical plant project across the Irish Sea for Bristol Myers Squibb.

The company backed this up with a £2 million ($2.7 million) investment in what it called “sustainable, technologically advanced plant”, adding that; “The past year has left us well placed to continue our better than best practice in 2018.”

The three positions below Erith were all US companies – with fourth-placed Brandenburg climbing two places and breaking the $200 million barrier in the process after a year that included the demolition of the retired 800 MW John Sevier fossil coal-fired power plant in Tennessee. This meant all the top six places were occupied by American or British businesses, but mainland Europe restored some sort of balance by filling three of the next four, including a 15% revenue rise for Netherlands-based Beelen Sloopwerken that took the company three places up the list to seventh. >13

While Liberty was posting a significant increase to reach the top 20, the figure needed to reach this level was around $12 million down on its 2016 equivalent, providing its own pointer to the eventual value of the d&ri100 in total.

POSITIONS 21 TO 50DSM Demolition (21st) continued to reap the benefits of its management buyout, with an increase in turnover of close to 25%.

Scudder (25th) successfully completed projects across demolition, deconstruction and civils enabling including London-based contracts at the Lots Road power station, Royal Opera House and Selfridges as well as sites in Leicester and Birmingham in the English midlands.

Nabekai Corporation (26th) was the highest placed Japanese company in the d&ri100 and was one of several contractors in this part of the listing to improve on 2016 with some healthy percentage turnover increases. Others included the French firm ETS Genier Deforge (24th), Italy’s Despe (30th), Raz-Max from >14

Russia (31st) and PP O’Connor of the United Kingdom (39th). Netherlands-based DDM (46th) broke into the top 50 based on an increase in turnover of more than 20%. Its success leaned heavily on demolition of chemical plants and oil refineries in both Europe and Asia, with the newly established DDM Dismantling business making its own contribution. Raz-Max carved out a similar niche in the far east region of its home country, as well as on a major environmental project in Moscow itself.

Also in this part of the listing were the consistent performers Priestly Demolition (27th) and Delsan-AIM (28th), the highest placed Canadian contractors in the d&ri100.

Avenir Deconstruction of France improved their position at the same time.

The British company leading off this part of the listings was Thompsons of Prudhoe, based in the north east of England, and MGL Demolition (59th) made it a double success for the region with a huge increase in turnover of its own.

Sauer Bau of Germany, as well as rising four places in the table, held the symbolic 75th position, its turnover of $25.8 million being around $1.5 million lower than the total Wooldridge Ecotec posted in the same spot a year ago.

listing improved their turnover relative to the previous year, leaving Homrich Wrecking the best performer with an increase of just under 5%.

POSITIONS 76 TO 100Inevitably, things tighten up considerably towards the end of the list, with barely $7.5 million separating the final 25 companies. Strong performances included those of AR Demolition and the

National Wrecking Company to enter the list at joint 85th, while R Baker & Sons posted a $4 million increase on a turnover that was only $18 million to start with, which earned it a climb of 10 places to 89th.

New entries, the lifeblood of the d&ri100, also become more frequent at this end of the table, with no fewer than four in the final nine positions.

These comprised two from

the USA – the World Demolition Awards winning Berg Corporation (92nd) and Grant Mackay two places further on – and two from the UK in the shape of Goody Demolition and DDS.

So there it is. The 2018 d&ri100 is decided, now the preparation starts for 2019. Will we see a new name at the top of the list, or will NorthStar remain out in front? As always, it will be fascinating to watch. ■
