The Book of Joseph Comes to Baltimore

DiscoveryA Journey

TO

2 The Voice of Beth El Congregation

Rich Hollander is, quite literally, watching his life unfold before his eyes. From a seat in the Everyman Theater, he watches as actors portraying him, his father and their extended family members rehearse their lines and prepare for the opening night of The Book of Joseph, an original play based on the improbable story of his family.

The play is at once the story of Joseph — who emigrated to the United States from Poland in 1939, leaving behind his mother and several aunts — and the story of Rich himself, who discovered this history as a fluke, and faced a journey of his own coming to terms with it.

On October 22, 1986, Rich was living a fantastically ordinary life: he was in his mid-30s, a television reporter for WBAL-TV in Baltimore, living in the Homeland section of Baltimore with his wife Ellen and their three children. A proud member of the Beth El family, Rich would later serve as president and his children would celebrate their mitzvot and weddings at Beth El.

But when the phone rang that day, it brought a new reality. It was the police in Westchester County, New York, calling to inform him that earlier that day, both his parents were in a car accident and had been killed. As life-changing as that was, it was also a prelude to discovering his father’s immediate family’s history in Poland prior to World War II.

Months after the accident, Rich went to New York to empty the house and found a box that contained approximately 200 letters that had been sent from Europe to the US, stamped all over with the Nazi insignia.

His father had never discussed his family’s history in Poland, the Holocaust, or these letters. And Rich, too, would put the box away, both physically and emotionally, not opening or delving into its contents for more than a dozen years.

But when he did, partly at the urging of his own son, having them translated and examined by scholars, he learned that not only do they tell the personal story of his grandmother and his aunts living in Poland, and then Jewish ghettos (they would later perish in the war), but they form a historically significant first-hand telling of that period. A truly rare find.

Rich worked with historians and writers to produce “Every Day Lasts A Year: A Jewish Family's Correspondence from Poland,” a book that that tells the story of the letters’ discovery and the contents in their entirety.

After the book was published in 2007 by Cambridge University Press, the story of Rich’s and his father’s journeys were adapted into play by acclaimed playwright Karen Hartman, titled “The Book of Joseph.”

The play premiered at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in January 2017. It begins a run at the Everyman Theater in Baltimore May 9-June 10.

EVERYMAN THEATRE Sunday, June 3 at 2:00 PMTickets are $56 or $65. See the show and attend a question and answer session after the show with Rich Hollander, a Past President of Beth El Congregation.

For ticket sales or questions please contact Rene Daniel at [email protected] or Elliot Merenbloom at [email protected].

The play is a poignant, emotional roller coaster with topics that are remarkably relevant today: family secrets, US immigration policy, a psychological journey of a parent and child, a father confronting his fears, strong women, survival and renewal through love.

“The Book of Joseph is an extraordinary play; an epic experience that bridges time, space and community past and present,” said director Noah Himmelstein. “It’s the kind of transformational storytelling that can only happen in the theatre.”

Rich’s artifacts are also currently on display at the Jewish Museum of Maryland.

After waiting so long for the letters to be discovered and shared by both Rich and his father, Rich says he knows that the letters had been preserved for a reason: to share this story with future generations.

To Joseph from his mother, Berta:

“So my sweet son my thoughts are always with you. Please be entirely reassured and do not think about me, everything will be fine. I close with affectionate kisses for you as well as for my dear daughter in law... I would like to write to you all day long, I believe I am talking with you. I don’t know what words I can say to you. I wish much happiness and health.”

“Through the play, whether it is produced next in New York, or a community playhouse in Peoria, I know that my family members — whose lives had been cut so terribly short — will live to tell their stories forever,” Rich said.

5The Voice of Beth El Congregation

L’DOR VA’DORBy Rabbi Steven SchwartzThis month’s issue of the Beth El Voice conveys a powerful sense of what we often call 'l’dor va’dor.' Literally translated the phrase means ‘from generation to generation,’ but the nuance of it carries a deeper sense. Large scale, it has to do with Jewish continuity, the question of how the Jewish people can maintain its identity as the generations come and go. Small scale, the phrase speaks to us of familial connection, the ties that bind grandparents to parents to children to grandchildren. How can we ensure that our children and grandchildren are Jewishly educated and connected? How do we make sure that our family histories are remembered and celebrated, that we pass on the knowledge of who we are and from where we’ve come?

One traditional answer to the large scale question of Jewish continuity is the holiday of Shavuot. Of all of our holidays, I’ve always felt Shavuot gets the shortest shrift. It comes around each year just as the Hebrew school calendar is winding down, right about the time people are finalizing vacation plans, packing children up for camp, and looking forward to some summer down time. It is a holiday that often and easily gets lost in the shuffle of our daily lives.

But more than any other holiday Shavuot is concerned with the transmission of the tradition from one generation to the next. It marks the moment of the giving of the Torah, the sacred text that is still the core of Jewish life and practice. And the point is that Torah cannot exist in a vacuum. Without the Jews to carry the Torah, literally and metaphorically, it would cease to exist. Shavuot is the annual communal reaffirmation of our commitment to be Torah-carriers. By celebrating the holiday, we are reminding ourselves of the responsibility we have to teach Torah to the generations that come after us. When we do this, we enrich our own lives and the lives of our children and grandchildren, but we also create a space in this world for God’s great gift, the Torah, to reside.

I hope you will join us this year for our Tikkun Leil Shavuot, a night of Torah study and reflection on Saturday night May 19, and also for Shavuot services on Sunday and Monday, May 20 and 21.

If Shavuot is a national answer to the age old question of Jewish continuity, this month’s Voice also contains a more personal and intimate answer to the question.

Many of you may already know Rich Hollandar, a past president of the congregation. Some years ago Rich began a journey of exploration and investigation into his own family’s history. Along the way he uncovered an astonishing story of love and loss that winds its way through the events of the Holocaust, immigration to the United States, and a tragic accident. The research became a book, and the book has been turned into a moving play, The Book of Joseph, which will be in residence at Baltimore’s very own Everyman Theatre from May 9th to June 10th.

The play’s narrative is filled with historical information and references, but it is at its core a story of family, of the relationships between parents and children, of the expectations we have of one another, and how important it is to us to give our children some sense of who we are that they can carry forward into their own futures.

L’dor va’dor indeed!

THE BETH EL BY-LAWS AND MEMBERSHIP FOR INTERFAITH FAMILIES On March 1, 2017, the General Assembly of Kehillot of the United Synagogues of Conservative Judaism (USCJ,) the umbrella organization to which Beth El and the other Conservative synagogues belong, began to allow synagogues to expand membership to include non-Jews. In addition, USCJ is allowing each synagogue to interpret that ruling in a way that is appropriate for their particular congregation. Beth El has always welcomed families with one non-Jewish spouse (or partner) to our community. Now we have an opportunity to update our by-laws officially to include the non-Jewish spouse as an official member of the congregation. A small committee was assembled to determine how the by-laws revision should be written. The new verbiage was then presented to the executive committee, and was approved by the Board of Trustees in March. The language for the revision to the by-laws can be read in full on the Beth El website at bethelbalto.com/interfaithfamilies. Come to the annual meeting on May 16 and vote for this important and symbolic change.

We would like to acknowledge the hard work of Barbara Green for the Pesach Drive. Over $1400 was collected; we had generous donations from congregants, Sisterhood, and the Social Action Committee. We were able to supply six Beth El families with gift cards to Seasons and Seven Mile Market, and with some food. Thank you to all who helped Barbara and the Social Action Committee continue this wonderful work.

The Social Action Committee volunteered at Moveable Feasts on Tuesday April 17. It was a wonderful day. Also thanks to all who were able to attend and to Joanne Michaelson for helping to organize this worthwhile event.

Sonya and Jerry Goodman continue to provide meals for families staying at Hope Lodge. The last one for the year will be in May. If you would like to help with some of the food prep, please contact Sonya Goodman at 410-602-8766.

We have been approached by The Pearlstone Center regarding the possibility of Beth El becoming a host site for the One Straw Farm CSA. A CSA is a Community Supported Agriculture program, in which people invest upfront to receive organically grown produce through-out the growing season. There are different shares available, and you would pick up your food once a week at Beth El, a time to be decided. If anyone is interested in this, please let us know as soon as possible. It is a wonderful way to get fresh produce, to help our local farmers, and to cut down on emissions associated with transporting food from long distances. This CSA would start the first week of June, and continue through mid-November. The Social Action Committee will provide funds to purchase from the CSA and the food will be donated to families in need.

BETH EL CONGREGATION APPOINTS AMANDA MAX BEITMAN AS NEXT DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Beth El Congregation of Baltimore announced that its Search Committee, led by First Vice-President Ed Mishner, has appointed Amanda Max Beitman as Director of Development, following a six-month search that included dozens of applications and six official interviews. “Beth El is in debt to our dynamic search committee who dedicated their time and expertise to this important process,” said Ed Mishner.

The Director of Development is responsible for coordinating the entire organization’s fundraising and marketing activities. Amanda will start her new position on May 1, 2018.

"We are so excited to bring on a Director of Development with the creativity and energy that Amanda brings to this position,” said Josh Bender, Executive Director. “Her skills and experience in development, working with volunteers, planning events, and building lasting and authentic relationships in the Baltimore Jewish Community will make her an asset to our team and the Beth El family. Amanda will inherit a strong development program and legacy thanks to our beloved Ailene Sher, of blessed memory. She will also be surrounded by incredibly committed lay leaders who have shaped Beth El and made it what it is today.”

Amanda brings a wealth of knowledge from the Jewish communal sector to Beth El Congregation of Baltimore. In her previous role as Director of Affinities for The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, Amanda created and executed strategic fundraising plans, including the management of the Maimonides Society, a group of healthcare professionals, and organized missions to Israel.

She brings with her a prior love and connection to Beth El. “A couple of years ago I sat in High Holiday services at Beth El for the first time,” said Mrs. Max-Beitman. “I didn’t know what to expect, and I did not know how inspired and moved I would be by the service. It was the first time in years that I had been spiritually moved in that way. With Beth El as a pillar Jewish institution that is continually innovating and evolving, I am overwhelmed with excitement to become part of the team and to work with the clergy, staff, and incredible lay leaders that Beth El is known for in the community.”

Amanda holds a Masters of Jewish Communal Services from Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University. As an Orton-Gillingham certified tutor in the Dyslexia Tutoring Program, Amanda volunteers to help struggling students learn to read. Amanda lives in downtown Baltimore with her husband, Peter.

THE JEWISH WAR VETERANS, POST 888, NEEDS OUR HELP!Sunday, May 20, 2018, from 12-2:00 PMEach year flags are placed on the graves of our Jewish War Veterans for Memorial Day. The American JWV, founded in 1896 by 63 Jewish Civil War Vets, is the oldest of any American Veterans organization in the United States. We need to keep these veterans' legacies and memories alive and remember their sacrifices.

Barry Steelman, Beth El congregant and Jewish War Veteran (Vietnam), has requested our help in placing flags again this year. The cemeteries are located along Windsor Mill Road, Rogers Avenue, and Liberty Road. We will meet at Beth El in the rear School Parking lot. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to participate in a mitzvah project together; L’Dor Va’Dor.

If you wish to volunteer or for more information, contact Barry Steelman at 410-486-0023 or [email protected].

HOLOCAUST MEMORIALBeth El offers a unique opportunity and a place of remembrance and reflection for family and friends who perished during the Shoah. Renowned Israeli Artist Yaacov Heller developed a one-of-a-kind sculpture which was donated by Brenda Weil Mandel and Louis Frock in memory of their family members who perished in Auschwitz and Buchenwald and to honor those who survived. The sculpture is located at Beth El Memorial Park at 9700 Liberty Road in Randallstown.

Plaques are available for purchase for $500.

If you are interested in purchasing a plaque, contact the Beth El office at 410-484-0411.

LET’S CELEBRATE ISRAEL’S 70TH BIRTHDAYWednesdays, May 23, 30 & June 6 at 7:00 PM Share four Israeli films as we celebrate Israel’s milestone 70th birthday. Each film will represent a different story in the history of the growing State of Israel. There will be two speakers: one with an American perspective and one with an Israeli perspective presented at each screening. Held in the Offit Auditorium.

FEE: $36 for all 4 films or $10 per film at the door.

MAY 23: JERUSALEM CUTS (2008) with Rabbi Steven Schwartz and Rafi Rone, Weinberg Foundation. Jerusalem Cuts looks at the very beginning of the State of Israel, set in the Old City of Jerusalem. One war, ten days, three stories: the Old City of Jerusalem, at the dawn of a new Middle East. For the Brits, it’s the shameful end of 30 years Mandate. For the Jews, it’s the birthday of their State. And for the Palestinians, it’s a catastrophe. Only now, 60 years later, images can be shown from three opposing points of view, telling a whole new story.

MAY 30: THE WOMEN PIONEERS (2013) with Rabbi Dana Saroken and Idan Zrihren, BZD. One hundred years ago, women pioneers came from Europe to Palestine to realize the dream of creating a new woman in a new world; a woman who would be as independent as a man. This film uncovers their passionate battles and painful disappointments.

JUNE 6: SALLAH SHABATI (1965) with Ben Kreshtool, Beth El Ritual Director and Sivan Chaban, BZD. This sharp, often hilarious satire that became the most successful film in Israeli history is about new immigrants Sallah and his family, who are left in a shack near their promised apartment and are abandoned for months. A Yemenite Jewish family that was flown to Israel during “Operation Magic Carpet” in 1949, is forced to move to a government settlement camp. Sallah, the patriarch of the family , tries to make money and get better housing in a country that can barely provide for its own and is in the midst of absorbing hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees from Arab countries.

JUNE 13: DIMONA TWIST (2016) with Hana Bor, Ph.D., Baltimore Hebrew Institute, Towson University and Neil Rubin, Ph.D., Beth Tfiloh Dahan High School. Seven women arrive in Israel by ship from North Africa and Poland in the 1950's and 1960's and are sent straight to Dimona, a town recently established in the desert. They talk about the pain of leaving their homes behind, poverty, the difficulties of adjusting in their new homeland, and their determined attempts to create rich and meaningful lives. They recount the struggles they took part in and the insights they gained, with humor, sorrow and dignity.

Please contact Ellen Marks at [email protected] or 410-580-5166 to RSVP for all Adult Education classes,

whether or not there is a fee.

MEET BOAZ DVIRWednesday, May 2 at 7:30 PM in the Offit AuditoriumWe invite you to join us as we welcome back award-winning filmmaker, Boaz Dvir. In his newest film, COJOT, Mr. Dvir tells the virtually unknown story of Michel Cojot, a French Holocaust survivor who risked his life to hunt down Gestapo commander Klaus Barbie and plays a pivotal role in one of history’s most daring hostage-rescue operations. This documentary is brought to Beth El by The Rabbi Mark G. Loeb Center for Lifelong Learning and the Center For Jewish Education. There is no charge for this evening and the community is welcome.

TUESDAYS AT THE MOVIESwith Dr. Rosann CatalanoTuesdays, May 8, 15, & 22, from 9:30-11:30 AM in the Agus LibraryFEE: $40 for Beth El members and $50 for non-members.

MAY 8: DOWNFALL (2004) charts the last 10 days of Hitler’s life, from April 20, 1945 to his suicide April 30. Follow Hitler’s descent into madness and the chaos of a country coming apart at the seams.

MAY 15: DENIAL (2016) is an historical drama that focuses on the legal battle for historical truth. Deborah Lipstadt is an American professor of Holocaust studies. David Irving, a scholar of Nazi Germany, dramatically claims that she and other “Holocaust scholars” are perpetuating a horrible lie. Irving accuses Lipstadt of libel, so she and her legal team must prove that the Holocaust actually occurred.

MAY 22: THE GOOD LIE (2014) tells the story of four Sudanese children orphaned after their village is massacred in the Second Sudanese Civil War. Fifteen years later, they are among the 3,600 “lost boys and girls” who resettle in America.

NEW!

There will be someone, in most classes held in the Agus Library, who can help you checkout or return a book. In order to expand library hours, more volunteers are needed. If you are interested in becoming a library volunteer, please contact Marlene Siegel at 410-484-1844. Current hours are:

Gabby GrabushThe Dr. Eyal Bor Leadership Award

Gabby is currently in our Lapid program and is in 7th grade at McDonogh. She also participated in both the Tefilah Team and Cantor King’s Junior Choir through her academic years. Gabby's response when asked who her favorite teacher was, she responded that Morah Patti (Jeffery Hobbs) was her best of all because "she engaged us through incentives and captured our interest in a way that we always loved being in her class." Gabby’s Lapid teacher, Andy Shankman, only had words of praise for Gabby, “Gabby is one of the most well-rounded students I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. She has an outstanding personality that is both practical and logical. When she speaks in class her peers respect her and listen because her thoughts are always insightful. She has all the hallmarks of a natural leader and it has been a real delight to witness first hand.”

Dr. Bor added. “I am so proud to have met Gabby and her parents and I am delighted that she will receive the award in my name. Mazal Tov!”

Daisy OberfeldThe Morton Offit Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement & for Continued Participation in Jewish Education

Daisy participates in ACHSHAV, our joint leadership program with Chizuk Amuno, where she has been an active member for three years. She dives into every opportunity, always eager to explore, learn, and grow. Daisy was so affected by her December 2017 trip to Israel; she described the experience as a “life changer.” Daisy has a strong passion for Jewish history, Jewish holidays and a great love for the State of Israel. “Praying at the wall was a very moving experience for me… it felt different than praying elsewhere. I was crying touching the wall!”

Judaism and being Jewish has directed many of the choices in her life. She went to Camp Louise, a Jewish sleep away camp for 10 summers, she is part of Students Take Action for Change (STAC) at the Owings Mills JCC where they advocate for different bills that are of interest to the Baltimore Jewish community, she is a member of her school’s Jewish Student Union and a member of the Ben Cardin Program.

Daisy is a brilliant example of how our teens are interested and active in the community around them and participate in causes that benefit their Jewish community. We can't wait to see what future successes await her! Mazal Tov!
