Should we despair of our being unable to attain perfect purity? We should, if perfection were our goal. However, we are not obliged to be perfect once and for all, but only to rise again and again beyond the level of the self. Perfection is divine, and to make it a goal of humans is to call on humans to be divine. All we can do is try to wring our hearts clean in contrition. Contrition begins with a feeling of shame at our being incapable of disentanglement from the self. Now is the time for turning

Now is the time for turning. The leaves are beginning to turn from green to red to orange. The birds are beginning to turn and are

heading once more toward the south. The animals are beginning to turn to storing their food for the winter. For leaves, birds and animals, turning comes instinctively. But for us, turning doesnot come so easily. It takes an act of will for us to make a turn.

It means breaking with old habits. It means admitting that we have been wrong, and this is never easy. It means losing face; it means

starting over again, and this is always painful. It means saying: I am sorry. It means recognizing that we have the ability to change. These

things are terribly hard to do. But unless we turn, we willbe trapped forever in yesterday’s ways.

God help us to turn fromcallousness to sensitivity,

from hostility to love,from pettiness to purpose,from envy to contentment,

from carelessness to discipline,from fear to faith.

Turn us around, O God, and bring us back toward you. Revive our lives, as at the beginning. And turn us toward each other, God, for in

isolation, there is no life.

Almighty Sovereign, who sits on the throne of mercy, governs with kindness; pardons the iniquities of God's people. God removes their sins one by one; increasing pardon to sinners, and forgiveness to transgressors; acting charitably with all mortals, not requiting them according to their wickedness. O God, you have taught us to recite the Thirteen Attributes; remember this day in our favour, the Covenant of the Thirteen Attributes, as You made known to Moses of old, as it is written:

Hear our voice Adonai our God, and have compassion upon us. Accept our prayer with compassion and favor.

Sounding of the Shofar

Even though the sounding of the shofar on Rosh HaShanah is a decree, it contains an allusion. It is as if the shofar's call is saying:

Wake up you sleepy ones from your sleep and you who slumber, arise. Inspect your deeds, repent, remember your Creator. Those who forget the truth in the vanities of time and throughout the entire year, devote their energies to vanity and emptiness which will not benefit or save: Look to your souls. Improve your ways and your deeds and let every one of you abandon his evil path and thoughts.
