My dear Colleague:

Subject: Estate of Mrs. Maud Wyatt, Wichita, Kansas

About three weeks ago, an item appeared in the newspapers announcing the bequest of a Mrs. Maud Wyatt, Wichita, Kansas, in favor of The Kansas Foundation for Private Colleges, Inc.

Upon receiving this information, I called Mr. H. W. Hill, Vice President and Trust Officer of First National Bank in Wichita, the Executor of Mrs. Wyatt's estate . He has recently sent a copy of the Last Will an,d Testament as executed by her and promises a copy of the inventory of the estate when it is filed. It is his guess that the inventory will be prepared in. late June or early July.

The Will stipulates individual bequests to seven nieces and nephews of $10, 000 each and to one institution in the amount of $5, 000. She also provides for a life income of $200 per month for a Clifford W. Jaquith of Wichita.

Re: Maud Wyatt Testamentary Trust (Cl664)

We are always interested in cooperating with any type of programs designed to augment bequests for our Kansas independent colleges and it is believed that your idea of preparing a brochure has considerable merit.

You have asked for some information regarding Maud Wyatt; but, unfortunately, I was not acquainted with this lady during her lifetime and therefore must rely on our files for background data. We do know that she was married at one time but are not advised as to whether the marriage was terminated by death of her spouse or otherwise. For quite a number of years prior to her death and illness which preceeded it, she ran a successful wallpaper and paint retail store where she actually handled all sales and bookkeeping. For many years, her confidant on legal matters was Attorney Roetzel Jochems of Jochems, Sargent and Blaes, Farmers and Bankers Life Building, Wichita, Kansas 67202; and undoubtedly, if he chose, he could give you information regarding this lady. For quite a number of years prior to her death, her real estate counsellor was Nestor Weigand, Sr., Realtor, 110 North Main, Wichita, Kansas 67202, and it was under his recommendations that she acquired a great many parcels of local real estate. I am enclosing xerox copies of her last will and testament as well as two newspaper clippings which ~may afford you some information, particularly in regard to the fact that she had no immediate family although she did have nephews and nieces who benefited under her will.

If I can assist you further from our records, we would be most pleased to do so at your request.

Dear Mr. Jochems :

Mr. H. W. Rill of the First National Bank in Wichita has suggested that I write to you. Of course we are aware that the details of the Maud Wyatt Testamentary Trust are handled through you . Our colleges have been the recipients of the generosity of the Wyatt Trust for almost ten years.

I 1r1rote Hr. Hill, indicating to him that we were thinking of preparing a brochure showi ng what this trust has meant to our member coll~ges through the Foundation in the hope that it might stimulate simi lar bequests.

Since I did not know Maud \oiyatt personally, I "'onder i f you would be willing to say anything about her of a personal nature that we might use as an i ntroduction to such a brochure. Of course we have the details of the trus t. Anything that you would care to suggest would be appreciated, and I assume that such an idea would meet with your approval. We do not plan any extensive campaign :in regard to seeking bequests. A good deal of this .is done by individual colleges. However, from time to time we do have those who are interested in th:l.s way of assisting the colleges and we would appreciate your help in the above regard..

Sincerely,

Dear Williard:

Just recently I received notice from the Topeka Office that the funds from the Maud Wyatt Testamentary Trust wer e received. Even though this is an annual gift that con1es to the colleges like clockwork we just cannot allow our senses of appreciation and gratitude to become callous and not expre ss our thanks over and over. If there are members of the family still living, would you as a Trust Officer of the Fund express to the1n our deep gratitude. I sure am speaking for all the independent col~eges in the State of Kansas. Dear Dr. Smith

. ..--... •.

Re; Maud

I received your letter dated 28 June and have dbl-ayed -an,swering for several reasons, neither valid. So here it goes, in narrit:ive .J'oi:m.'

My first contact with Maud Wyatt was during the SO's when Union Development was attempting to buy 50' of her property just south of the Union National Bank. The sale was made and since she so hated to part with the property, we left her continue collecting the rent from the tenants and store her junk there, she had at one time been the manager of a paint & wallpaper store in the general area.

I was working for the law firm of Jochems Sargent & Blaes as office manager and accountant and managing property for Union Development, so I was the one Maud brought the rent to- I have no picture of her, but remember how she looked. She was short aprox. 5'2" and rather heavy, sandy hair turned gray with a poor red rinse, and at 74 .or so, she was not to photogenic .

Maud was born in Wichita, and went to business college, from there she went to work as a bookeeper for the paint & wallpaper store which she later turned up owning. The above 50' of property now sold prompted her to seekhelpwith her tax return. The sal.e reported, along with some substantial contributions to the little church in her neighborhood, (in excess of 1.0,000 plus the use of her pink cadillac) she tomplained bitterly about how the Government wanted everything she owned, it was then that the first seeds were sown- it developed that she liked young people and believed in education, liked Southwestern College but did not like her contact with that institution. The Private Colleges of Kansas was the answer. The will was drawn, Emmet Blaes & Catherine Wells witnessed-time passed and Maud continued to make substantial contributions to her little church.

Later on a neighbor of hers came to see me and expressed her fears that Maud was being starved to death by her church. A lady was hired to look after her, and I bought groceries for her., shortly after this incompetency proceedings were started. She believed in the First National Bank very strongly, but they did not want to help in the proceedings. (she had in excess of 80,000 in her checking account) probably the reason for not helping just in case she was not incompetent.

Maud owned other proper ty when she died , which you are aware of from the copy of the will.

Maud lived in an old upstairs 4 plex apartment on Jackson, which she owned. I believe she acquired her property by being frugal almost stingy with herself, her only vice was the Pink Cadillac .

The law firm of Jochems Sargent & Blaes have the legal files and since I left their employ in April 1977, do not know how much of this is still available

Mr . T. Henry Stafford did visit my home on March 3, 1971 after I had alerted .Father Alquin Hemmen (myUnc,le) of problems. Mr . Staffords opening remark was "What do you want out of this?" My answer was I have 6 children and if any ever go to a private college , it ' ll have to be because some Maud Wyatt made it possible

I do have an old Oil Canvas painting of very poor quality that Maud gave me hanging in my basement to remind me of Maud.

Father Hemmen has given me occasional updates on the Trust and asks if I know any other Mauds.

I was very happy to :t:"eceive your letter and feel · appreciated by someone other than Uncle Alquin . My last l etter was from Mr . Stafford on March 5th 1971 thanking me for the visit . I did find out that the results were fruitful.

RE: Maud Wyatt Testamentary Trust

Dear Dr. Kelly:

The December 29, 2000 annual income distribution of $22,698.30 from the Maud Wyatt Trust to the Kansas Independent College Fund was an increase of $4,424.00 over the 1999 amount. A large contributing factor was expenses that were eliminated when the 1607 S. Broadway property was sold in February. We knew for several years that achieving a sale would be beneficial and are thankful it has now been accomplished.

Another very pleasant memory from calendar year 2000 was the visit by Sister Tarcisia Roths and you on May 11. We are pleased that the Trust was able to make a $12,500.00 discretionary distribution from Principal. The opportunity of using a matching grant to enhance faculty development in the use of technology through a collaborative program must be exciting for all of your schools.

We are pleased that the Wyatt Trust not only had increased income to distribute, but could also participate in the special matching grant program during calendar year 2000. Best wishes to KICF for a very successful year in 2001.
