Charlie Brown: Cody Ranck

What do you like most about playing your role? I think that the best part about playing Charlie Brown is that throughout the show you really see him grow as a person and a character and you see him grow out of his shy shell by the end of the show which is really cool.

What is your favorite scene/number in the production? My favorite scene would probably be the baseball game because there are a lot of moving parts and it’s a really fun scene to watch and be in.

What has been your favorite/best part about the production thus far?Personally my favorite part of the production is feeling like I’m a part of a family again. Every year the cast and crew grow so close and we always feel like a family, and this year is no exception. In my opinion it feels even more like a family with everything going on in the world. I guess you could say that it gives all a sense of normalcy.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about doing the musical in the future?

This year, Central Dauphin High is performing the show, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown as its spring musical. The show tells the story of the Peanut gang’s adventures through lunch time, baseball games, and glee club performances. Charlie Brown: Sean Robinson

What do you like most about playing Charlie Brown?

I like the similarities that both me and the character share in our personalities, but the thing I like most is how he always tries to succeed no matter what.

Were you surprised this is the role you were casted as?Honestly yeah. I thought Brei would’ve been Charlie Brown and that I would have been Schroeder.

What has been your favorite/best part about the production thus far?My favorite part so far is working together with all the cast members, and how all of them aren’t at each other’s neck at all. We’re one huge family no matter what.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about doing the musical in the future? My advice would be for them to not be afraid and go for it, you never know what could happen if you try your hardest at something, and musical is an amazing place to meet and bond with new people. No matter what, take the opportunity and savor each moment.

Honestly, just be confident and listen. If you have confidence you will succeed in whatever you do even if it isn’t musical. Also listen to your superiors.Everyone who directs the show from Mr. Madas to Mr. Bitner are fantastic, they all know what they are talking about, so make sure you are always listening and paying attention because if you do that they will send you in the right direction.

Lucy Van Pelt: Madeline Widnick

Were you surprised this is the role you were casted as?

I felt like Lucy was the right part for me, and I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that I got cast as her! The directors pick the parts unbelievably well to match how they want the characters to look and act, so I think the part everyone got this year fits really well with who they are. I was so excited and determined to take on the challenge of her role.

Is musical something you have always participated in?I actually joined musical only last year! I hadn’t done musical before that because I played basketball and couldn’t balance both activities at the same time. Last year, though, my friend and I decided that we were going to audition for the musical because it seemed like so much fun, and it ended up being exactly that! Everyone involved took us right under their wing and it was such a great few months. Then I continued to do it this year and will hopefully do it next year as well.

What is it like playing a lead role?Being a lead is a lot of responsibility, but that goes for any part. It’s a lot of fun, though, and I love to see how my acting and singing fits in with everyone else’s role alongside me. I have great people to work with this year, which makes it even more fun!

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about doing the musical in the future? If you are thinking about joining musical, go for it!! Everyone in the musical makes a little family

together, and I love that there is no feeling of any hierarchy as far as grades or what part you got. Musical has given me such a positive experience and the end result makes all the hard work worth it. Every individual person’s talent is showcased in some way during each production, and it is just an overall uplifting and positive experience. We always need more people, so definitely consider joining next year and seeing how our production this year turned out in early April!

Lucy Van Pelt: Faith Mellott

Why did you start doing musical theatre?I started doing musical theatre because I have a passion for singing. I also really enjoy being able to express myself and take on abstract roles.

What do you like most about playing Lucy? What I like most about playing Lucy is that I have interactions with pretty much everyone in the show. I’m in scenes with Charlie Brown, Linus, Schroeder, Snoopy, etc., and I have made so many friends!

What has been your favorite/best part about the production thus far?My favorite part of the show so far is my song with Schroeder. I sprawl across a wooden piano while my love interest, Schroeder, plays a Beethoven song. I express my love to him and he does not show it back! It is so funny and really enjoyable to act out.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about doing the musical in the future? My advice would be to practice the songs, dances, and lines you have, even when you’re not at practice. Being fully prepared will allow you to get the most out of the musical experience and have a lot of fun. Also, if you’re on the line about auditioning, do it! You make so many awesome friends.

As the year progresses, it seems to only get harder to juggle school, work, and a social life, while taking care of yourself. Taking care of yourself is so important, and once you have done so, everything else will come so much easier. Practicing mindfulness helps you be fully present, in the moment, and can help you learn a lot about yourself.

Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present, aware of where you are and what is going on, and not reacting or becoming overwhelmed by your surroundings. Here are some tips and ways to achieve mindfulness.

Mindful Moment PracticesSome practices are simple and could take seconds, yet still make a large difference if done regularly. It can be as simple as taking deep, nourishing breaths, taking note of the rhythms of your breaths, and the rise and fall of your chest and stomach. • Take a moment, when waking up, and sit up in a relaxed position, and straighten your spine, making

your posture straight but not rigid. Focus on your posture and how it feels at that moment. • At any given time, stop and ask yourself what you want to accomplish that day. Some questions you

could ask yourself could be: - What can I do to better take care of myself? - How can I be more compassionate to myself and others? - How can I have a greater impact today? - Check in with yourself throughout the day. Pause, take a deep breath, and focus on your posture. Pay attention to how your body feels in that moment and let your mind recover.

MeditationMeditation is the practice of being present in the moment, and is used to train the mind. There are many different methods of meditation and different styles work for different people, but it all comes down to stepping out of any distracted thoughts and bringing your mind to attention in a balanced way.

Mindfulness meditation is the practice of actually being present in the moment, which can help you become more mindful throughout the day especially during difficult situations. Meditation works best on a fixed schedule and location. Pick a time of day and find a comfortable spot in your house or even outside. - Sit upright, and if it helps close your eyes. - Take deep breaths, focusing on the way your body moves as you breathe. - Listen to the sounds around you, but don’t let them distract you or overtake your attention. - Pay attention to how you feel in that moment, and try to resolve any negative feelings. - Let all of your thoughts and worries roll through your mind, paying as little attention as possible to each one, in a sense, letting them go. - Transcendental meditation aims to promote a state of relaxed awareness through the recitation of a mantra. It really is just as simple as reminding yourself verbally throughout the day that you can do this.

YogaAnother way to become mindful is to practice yoga. While directing all of your attention to your body, how it feels, and how it moves as you practice yoga, helps you to put yourself in a place of mindfulness, where your entire focus is on the present moment.

Mr. Chapman

I interviewed Mr. Chapman and asked him some questions about himself including some of his favorite things, his hobbies, and stuff he likes to do. Here are the answers I got from him. So take a read and learn about one of your Central Dauphin teachers.

Q:Do you play any sports in your free time?A: Golf and ice hockey are the two sports that I play the most now. Q:What sports did you play in high school?A: I played football, basketball, and track and field.

Q: Do you have any special memories of your time as a high school athlete? A: I have many special memories from high school sports. The 1982-83 school year (my senior year) was the first season for the Mid-Penn Conference and also was the first year of the District Three football playoffs. Our team (CV) winning the first district title and finishing ranked number one in the state was my greatest memory. The two school years prior, our basketball team won the last two Capital Area Conference titles, which were both wonderful memories. The camaraderie with my teammates and coaches in high school have formed memories and meaningful relationships that have lasted a lifetime. I was extremely fortunate to grow up the son of a high school football and track coach. The first eighteen years of my life were a true blessing. Q: Why did you become a teacher?A: I wanted to have the opportunity to assist in molding young people to become successful adults. Q: What is the best part of teaching Sports and Entertainment Marketing? A: The best parts are combining marketing concepts with memorable sports and entertainment events for students to learn and understand. Q: What is your favorite sports moment in history and what made this moment so special? A: My favorite sports memory is the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team’s unexpected run to a gold medal. A magical coach, Herb Brooks, led twenty young men to become a viable team to challenge the greatest hockey team in the world, the Soviet Union. This culminated in the U.S. team achieving the incredible upset, 4-3, on its way to an Olympic gold medal.

Q: What is an important piece of advice that you’ve learned from your years of teaching that would be good for students to hear? A: One quote that I believed in when I was a student-athlete, that I have shared with my students and players, is that: “The two things that a person has complete control of are one’s effort and attitude.”

Q: What was your favorite part of college?A: I loved the competition of football and basketball, as well as the camaraderie with teammates and friends.

Spring Activitiesby: Brady Weaver

Some of the greatest times to get outside and enjoy fresh air, in my opinion, is springtime. It allows you to do so many great activities, sports, and outside hobbies! Baseball is considered “America’s pastime” and is something that many take full advantage of as the weather heats up. It typically can be played through the start of Spring to the end of Fall. However, Phillies’ and Pirates’ fans don’t typically see their team make it to the fall. Places like Koons Park and Brightbill Park are great open spots that have baseball fields and hold games. You can also use this time to go camping and enjoy the great outdoors. It is a lot of fun to go with a group of friends you enjoy being around. Some camping grounds like Chestnut Lake Campground and Blue Mountain Resort, both located in the Pocono Mountains, are great options for a close camping site. Camping also allows you to smell the fresh air and roast s’mores. As the days get longer and the sunsets get prettier, spring is a perfect time to enjoy sunsets wherever you may be. A perfect place to view a sunset or sunrise is “Shock Rock” located in Dauphin County. It’s an amazing way to end your day overlooking the mountains and trees.

Mindfulness from page 3

Here are some poses that can help you stretch, relieve stress, and prime your mind to become more mindful:• Find balance on all fours- pay attention to how your weight is balanced on your hands and knees, move

around and shift your weight between your hands and knees, studying how your body moves. • Cow pose- on all fours, take a deep breath, and while releasing that breath, bring your shoulders and

chest up, letting your spine drop into your belly, towards the floor. • Standing forward bend- stand up straight and tall, making sure to extend your spine, slowly bring your

upper body forward and down, placing your hands on the floor for support. • Warrior pose- stand with your feet wide apart, your right foot pointing forward and bring your left leg

into a lunge (at a 90 degree angle), keeping your knee in line with your foot. As you inhale, straighten your back and bring your arms up, pointing straight out on both sides. Let your head turn to the left, feeling how each part of your body is being stretched.

Mindfulness is so important. You can learn a lot about yourself, especially how to relieve stress and make yourself happy. In times like these, we all need to take a moment to ourselves and analyze how we feel in that moment, and what we can do to fix that for ourselves. Being able to achieve mindfulness can lead you to a whole new perspective.

Central Dauphin Upcoming Activities and Events

by Claire Owens

As the school year comes to a close and the fourth marking period approaches, we all look forward to the exciting activities and events that go on during this time. A year ago we were not able to have spring sports, learn in school, or participate in any of the traditional exciting activities planned. Spring sports are already back in action and everyone is getting prepared for their upcoming season. The weather is already starting to become nice again, and it’s time to start thinking about the fun things that are ahead as the school year begins to close. Senior prom is coming up as well as graduation for the class of 2021! Since we were not able to hold a prom last year this is an amazing opportunity for the seniors to be able to dress up and go to their own prom! Although these events aren’t going to be how they have in the past, we are still optimistic that they will be filled with enjoyment, especially for the senior class. As you can tell the students have a lot to look forward to at this time of the school year and we are excited to participate in these amazing events!

Adam Porter graduated from Central Dauphin in 2004. He has taken over as the director of the Midtown Cinema located on Reilly street in Harrisburg. Midtown plays a variety of foriegn movies and smaller release movies with premium snacks and coffee. Along with this Adam has also been able to create St@rtup Harrisburg which will allow people with ideas for businesses or small businesses to be brought up to a large scale by

allowing them to rent a room and have people like web designers, video productions, graphic designers helping them. Adam created St@rtup Harrisburg to bring entrepreneurship to light in Harrisburg and build a foundation that could help people.

Q-What extracurricular activities did you participate in while at CD?

A-I was in orchestra freshman year as well as marching band and indoor drumline all four years. While I wasn't officially on any mini-THON committees at CD, I did end up dancing for Penn State Harrisburg at THON in University Park in 2008 and it was a truly unforgettable experience (so get involved in mini-THON, if nothing else!).

Q-What is a funny experience or special memory you have of your time at CD?

A-Mr. Chop played Stairway to Heaven in the planetarium--in its entirety--the last astronomy class of the year.

Q-How has CD set you up for your life after high school?

A- We were able to host a Swiss exchange student, Simon, my junior year which vastly expanded my world view. It afforded me the chance to travel and meet people from countless other places and cultures that I may not have been able to if not for CD's willingness to welcome international students in that way.

Q-Have any teachers/faculty members influenced you? And if so, which one has impacted you the most?

A-Mr. Milbrand. As he said: "To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late. To be late is to be fired."

Q-Did you attend a college or university after high school?

A-I attended PA Culinary Institute in downtown Pittsburgh immediately after graduation then transferred to Penn State Harrisburg for a degree in Public Policy. Life had other plans, though, so we'll see if I finish it someday.

Q-What was the main factor in your decision to create St@rtup? How was the idea brought to life, and what was the process to make it successful?

A-My business partner, also named Adam, and I met at a Harrisburg Young Professionals new member social in 2012 and became fast friends. He was a web developer and I had seen The Candy Factory, a coworking space in Lancaster, doing well for a couple of years and thought "Harrisburg needs this." We think we're still on the way to 'success,' but through some thoughtful risk-taking and help from an endless team of partners, family and friends, we've been able to build a growing community of engaging, smart and tenacious entrepreneurs, freelancers and remote workers. continued on page 8

Op/ED How to Have A Great Prom

by Kate Henning

If you asked me years ago what I wanted my senior prom to look like, it would be the complete opposite of what I would say today. I would say that I want a huge dance floor, DJ, big tables with all of my friends, my hair and makeup done, and a huge party afterwards. Sadly, we all know we will never get the senior prom we imagined when we were young, but we can make the best out of the situation we are in.

Location: I think the most reasonable location for our prom would be at the High School. I know it isn’t The Radisson or The Hershey Hotel, but I think it would be the most realistic and doable. But, if another location is available and has enough space, I would 100% rather go somewhere else.

People: Seniors only. Sorry Juniors, but at a small location like the High School and with the restrictions we are under, it makes sense to only have a Senior prom. Plus, you have next year. Obviously everyone can bring whoever they want as a date, but CD Seniors have to take priority.

Food: Food trucks. I think we should have food like we have at Homecoming in a normal year, this way we don't have to share serving utensils. Also if we did this we would have to make prom ticket prices lower, because we are buying our own food. Maybe we could also have prepackaged food for snacks at tables. We could have little goodie bags of cookies or chips.

Music: I think, if we have the money for it, a DJ with a mask is totally reasonable and doable.

Attire: Normal prom attire- long dresses, suits, and dress shoes. I feel like if we are all allowed to dress down and wear shorts and t-shirts to our “prom”, it shouldn’t be considered a prom. Also, I know masks are a must, but if we could find a way to do an all outside prom and could be maskless while safely socially

Adam Porter from page 7

Q-How do you think it has changed small businesses around Harrisburg? A-While we've not quantified this as well as we should've over the years, we've seen so many ideas and initiatives take form from our members simply sharing space. There's immense power in being together and we see the benefits of, and need for, coworking only growing in a post-pandemic world.

Q-When you started the Midtown Cinema did you think it’d grow into what it is today and does it surprise you at all?A- I've been fortunate to be caretaker of this neighborhood anchor for nearly eight years, but it was started in 2001 by Allen Brown and Todd Shill (my sophomore year at CD!). Our team started just as the transition from 35mm film to digital was taking place. We've also been able to see the addition of our building neighbor, Zeroday Brewing Co., and we recently completed a significant renovation to our entire facility. It's been a strange year to run a movie theater, but our patrons and members have been incredibly supportive over the years.

Q-Did you always want to create businesses for the community or was it something that there was an opportunity and you took it? A-I'd certainly say the latter. Entrepreneurship wasn't a modeled behavior growing up, and Central PA is a particularly risk-averse area, so I'd be thrilled to inspire others to take the leap.

Q-Do you have any advice to high school students and/or your younger self? A-You are beautiful. Who you are is just who you're supposed to be. Call your mother. Do your math homework.

Connor Grauel

interviewed by Anna Conway

The academic student leader selected for this issue is Sophomore Connor Grauel! Connor is a well-rounded and determined student with quite interesting future goals and study tactics. We asked Connor some questions to get to know more about him:

Q: What do you do to make yourself successful in the classroom?A: I always try to be as active as possible in the classroom. Even if I don’t really know the answer, I will still raise my hand and participate. This leads to my success as a student. I also always ask questions if I don’t know the answer. Not doing this will lead to falling behind in class which just leads to a downward spiral.

Q: What are your future goals?A: I don’t really know for sure what I would like to do when I'm older, but it would be cool to go to Penn State and work for NASA or something like that. Becoming an engineer sounds cool, but there are many possibilities out there.

Q: Do you have any study tips?A: Study in a way that is unique to yourself. Everyone learns a different way, so try different ways of studying. Last year, I would study history riding on a hoverboard (it worked!). Whatever works, works!

Q: Are you involved in any clubs/sports?A: I am a part of choir, musical, tennis, NHS, and I play soccer for CASA. These clubs/sports are fun and I recommend them to everyone here at CD.

Q: What is something unexpected about you that would surprise people?A: I am an Uncle to a handsome two year old toddler named Gavin.

Q: How do you feel about online teaching?A: Well, I like sleeping in, but other than that it’s just “eh”. When we were off for two months straight, I had the same schedule everyday and zooms were getting tiring. Being back four days is fresh, but man am I tired. Waking up has been a struggle, and I miss that luxury, but seeing people again has been a treat.

Q: How has COVID-19 affected you?A: Covid has been rough for everyone, but for me it has really been the missed experiences and trips. Missed choir performances, missed holidays with the family, missed parties with friends, and much, much more. Everyone must stay hopeful and think positive for the future, because hope will keep us afloat on this vast stormy sea.

Snow Days or Virtual Days?Which is better?

Virtual Snow Days (Pro-remote learning)

by Blaise Heshler

There are many pros about having online learning on snow days. Instead of attempting to drag yourself into the cold building, you can learn from the warmth and comfort of your own home. Even though it's not technically a “day off,” you still have the opportunity to get some extra rest. Most teachers are pretty lenient, and some decide to not have any online meetings. Another pro would be that there are no makeup days. This has been the first year since kindergarten that we have had full holidays. It will be the first time in a long time that we have a full spring break, and no extra days at the end of the year.“Having a school day despite being in person has been very beneficial. It enables me to stay on top of my work and to not get complacent” says junior Tommy McGovern. Not only do some students think remote learning is a good idea, but teachers do as well. It keeps the students from getting lazy, and it keeps them on track. This proves that virtual days are worth it. Think about this when you’re enjoying your first real spring break in years.

Traditional Snow Days (Pro-days off)

by Nathaniel Mosey

Snow days are long anticipated days that students look forward to every winter, a day off school to relax and have fun playing in the snow. Now it is just another day. Before virtual learning, students were able to make some money shoveling driveways and sidewalks or could volunteer to help their elderly neighbor. They could also have a family day playing games and watching movies with their parents. Another benefit of staying home is being able to engage in different types of education. For example, they can still participate in physical fitness while shoveling, building snowmen and igloos, and sledding. Math and science are reinforced during baking, playing games, and making money shoveling. Erin Kurtz, 3rd grade teacher at West Hanover was quoted to say “With everything going on during this pandemic, I think the kids need some normalcy. They need to be able to wake up in the morning, be excited about the snow, and the fact they are off school.” This is why we need to keep our snow days!

CD’s Favorite Easter Candies

by Olivia Heard

Since Easter is upon us, I took it upon myself to do a short poll on Easter candy. The results were interesting, to say the least. I did not expect some candies to be as popular or unpopular as they were. The other category was added for those who liked candies that were not on the list or they were too few in numbers. Some of these included licorice and various types of chocolates. Regardless of bias, here are the candies you chose:

Who doesn’t love video games right? I know besides my boring job and homework I spend a good amount of my time on the game. One person who is great at video games is Jayden Laudermilch. Jayden is a Junior at Central Dauphin and his inter-esting job is that he actually gets a monthly check just to play some of his favorite games!

Q: How’d you first get into Gaming? So I first got into gaming when I played the Xbox 360. I was playing a game called Halo and I was actually really good. I then went to Playstation and played NBA 2k11 and there was online play where I played pretty good. I played NBA 2k20 competitively and I saw that I was better than a lot of people.
