5PM MUSIC AND ASSEMBLY 6PM CONVOCATION BEGINS The arrival of thousands of families and unaccompanied minors from Central America to the South Texas border has pushed the immigration issue to the forefront of debate in the national discourse. As there have been voices that called for protection, justice, and the humane treatment of refugees and immigrants, so also has there been a backlash of anti-immigrant wrath that has found expression from governors and members of Congress to neighborhoods and communities across the country. The heart and core of El Paso-Las Cruces is its identity as a community of immigrants. Just as the spirit of hospitality - bienvenidos as it is expressed here – has been strong and vibrant for hundreds of years, so also does the struggle for human rights have deep roots and a legendary history in this community. That history, that struggle, that voice and commitment will once again be manifested on Saturday, October 11 at 6 PM. All segments of the El Paso-Las Cruces border community are called upon to join the convocation and stand with the refugee and immigrant.
