No ano de 1985, o sueco Alfred Bernhard Nobel, que também foi inventor da dinamite, criou o Prémio Nobel, por iniciativa própria e pela necessidade de oferecer um prémio de grande notoriedade, a todos que realizassem alguma contribuição para o bem de toda Humanidade.

In 1985, Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the Swedish who was also the inventor of dynamite, established the Nobel Prize, on his own initiative and because of the need to offer a prize of great notoriety to everyone who performed some contribution to the good of all mankind.

Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) inventou a dinamite e outros explosivos. Pensou, na altura, que tais invenções seriam muito úteis para a construção civil e para a indústria mineira.

Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) invented dynamite and other explosives. He thought at the time that such inventions would be very useful for the construction and mining.

No entanto, a dinamite foi, essencialmente, utilizada como uma potente “arma” durante a guerra, tendo causado muitos danos à humanidade.

However, the dynamite was essentially used as a powerful "weapon" during the war and caused much damage to humanity.

Triste com a sua invenção, Alfred Nobel, um ano antes de morrer, em 1895, decidiu criar uma fundação com o seu nome, para onde doou toda a sua fortuna, com o objetivo de que esta fosse entregue, anualmente, a personalidades importantes que tenham prestado um valioso contributo à humanidade nas áreas da física, da química, da medicina ou fisiologia, da literatura, da paz e, mais recentemente, da economia.

Alfred Nobel was sad with his invention, and a year before he died, in 1895, he decided to create a foundation with his name, and he donated his entire fortune. He wanted that a prize to be delivered annually to important personalities who have made a valuable contribution to humanity: in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, peace and, most recently, the economy.

Os Prémios Nobel foram distribuídos pela primeira vez a 10 de dezembro de 1901, cinco anos após a morte do seu fundador e ainda permanecem.

In Portugal we have two Nobel prizes. One for medicine to Egas Moniz and another for literature to José Saramago.

We really enjoyed doing this work, because we practiced our English comprehension and reading. We also learnt new vocabulary and much more about Alfred Nobel Life.
