Even the best-run businesses experienceunforeseen problems: a burst water pipe destroys your computer system; a break-in causes unexpected losses and damage; a

sudden health problem and you’re out of action for weeks. Scenarios such as these can take a successful business to the brink of failure if the risk hasn’t been anticipated and planned for.

Expert risk management is a foundation stone for any successful business but it’s surprising how many businesses think “they’ll be all right”.

Ask insurance expert Brent Lehman from Willis about how the franchise industry is managing risk and his response is a mixture of concern and frustration. “On a daily basis the franchise industry is under-insured,” he says, “and last year’s Victorian bushfires really made that clear.”

As well as loss of property, one of the key areas franchisees need to think about is business continuity and succession planning. In a small business where one person may be the key to the success of the business, the loss of that person (temporary or otherwise) can be devastating.

Mr Lehman also suggests that the franchise industry should leverage their buying power tonegotiate insurance packages on behalf of franchisees. “Few franchisors offer their franchisees insurance options or discuss with them the importance ofinsurance,” he says.

Despite the tendency for the franchise industry to under-insure, Mr Lehman says awareness of the importance of insurance, especially for loss of income

insurance due to illness or injury, is growing. “There’s a few standout franchise businesses and the franchise industry as a whole has been working hard to build awareness of these issues.”

Charter Security’s Neil Haines also says there’sroom for improvement in the franchise industry when it comes to security. “Some people see security as a cost to their business that can’t generate a return but they really need to see it as part of a loss prevention strategy,” he says. “CCTV, for example, will activelydeter low-threat crime. Look at the major retailbusinesses such as department stores – they havesecurity cameras and security staff because they knowif they didn’t people would walk out with things.

“CCTV can also be a really effective training tool. It can help staff identify potential security risks andlearn how to more effectively prevent theft.”

The lack of appropriate and effective basic security is also an issue. “I’ve seen businesses run a $1 million business by day and then lock up at night using a $20 lock. They go home and think everything will be fine. You need to consider both daytime security and night-time security. Franchise businesses are very systems-driven, so it makes sense to make security part of those systems too.”

While the franchise industry could do better when it comes to insurance and security, Darryn McAuliffe from NAB has a more positive industry report card for the way the industry has handled the past 12 months.

“Overall we’re very pleased with how franchising has managed the downturn,” he says, “and we’recontinuing to invest in franchise businesses.”

How can you make your operation disaster-proof?

“I’ve seen businesses run a $1 million business by day and then lock up atnight using a $20 lock.”

Mr McAuliffe says a major consideration for the banking industry is cash-flow – generating it, managing it and maximising it. “It’s all about vigilance. Businesses need to keep costs down and keep a close eye on market trends and local activity to safeguard their customer base. When cash ismismanaged or dries up, businesses fail.”

The recent downturn has been an opportunity for the franchise industry to keep costs low by using its buying power to renegotiate with suppliers. Mr McAuliffe says good franchisors will negotiate on behalf of franchisees.

Another way to mitigate risk is to identify small problems before they become bigger ones. “It’s really important to keep key advisers and business partners abreast of changing conditions in your business,” he says. “It’s also really important to have succession planning in place and to review your business plan regularly. Heightened vigilance on industry trends and the changing external landscape is important if you want to avoid external factors having a negative impact on your business.”

Mr McAuliffe says that from the banking industry’s perspective, the franchise sector continues to be a good risk. NAB has invested in eight franchising specialists across the state who will be offering a specialised banking service to the industry.“Understanding the industry well means we can shorten the selection process and makes thingssimpler for potential customers.”
