ONE LOOK AT THE RESUME OF LYNN ABESHOUSE and you’ll begin to wonder how she does it all: Managing Principal of Abeshouse Partners, LifeBridge Health Board Member, Chair of the LifeBridge Health Development Committee, Co-chair (with all past Co-chairs) of the 2018 ‘Magic of Life’ Gala. Her contributions to the community are seemingly exhaustive (and exhausting!).
To kick off our annual donor honor roll issue, we sat down with Lynn to dis-cover why she always makes time to give
back to LifeBridge Health—and why she’s working so hard to inspire others to do the same.
Tell us about your personal connection to LifeBridge Health. What makes this organization so special to you?
Lynn Abeshouse: I was born at Sinai Hospital. I am the third generation of my family to be a part of LifeBridge Health. My paternal grandfather and my father

were both urologists who practiced at Sinai. When I was a little girl, my father would take me with him as he made his rounds on Sunday mornings. Those

special times made a lasting impression on me, seeing my father at work; I learned what it meant to really care for people.
Did that inspire you to give back?
Yes. I got involved in philanthropy in the community at a young age. I made my first significant gift to LifeBridge Health about 25 years ago in memory of my father. He had just passed away, and I was so grateful for the wonderful care he had received at Sinai. When my mother be-came seriously ill, LifeBridge Health was there for my family once again. It became important to me to give back to those who did so much for my parents’ care.
You’ve also contributed your time and leadership to LifeBridge Health over the years. What drew you specifically to the Development Committee?
I’ve been volunteering in various roles at LifeBridge Health for over 25 years! I was a board member at Levindale, then at Sinai, and now the LifeBridge board. I had a wonderful experience chairing the Magic of Life Gala in 2008. That role inspired me to become more active in fundraising. When I accepted the position of Development Committee Chair in 2013, I knew that I was sur-rounded by an extremely experienced team of committee members, executives, and development staff that could do a lot of great work together.

Why is fundraising so important to LifeBridge Health?
It’s simple: we are a nonprofit organi-zation and philanthropy accounts for a minimum of 30 percent of LifeBridge Health’s net income. The funds we raise are critical to enabling us to fulfill Life-Bridge Health’s purpose statement of caring for our communities together.
What’s your biggest fundraising challenge right now?
LifeBridge Health has a long tradition of multi-generational giving among families. Nationwide, the younger gen-erations are moving away from the communities they were born in. In ad-dition, Generation X and Millennial donors have a diverse portfolio of phil-anthropic interests and there is a lot of “competition” for these donor dollars. At LifeBridge Health, we are keenly aware that we were at risk of losing that stable, generational donor base that has supported us for so many years.
How have you worked to overcome those generational differences?
Two years ago, we made a concerted effort to establish a Leadership Society to focus on educating and cultivating the younger generation for future philan-thropy and leadership roles. This year, we are expanding the Society from 18 to 25 members, and our members range in age from 27 to 45. It’s been a win-win for LifeBridge Health and for the young leaders we are mentoring.
Physicians also play a critical role in your fundraising efforts.
Absolutely. The relationships our phy-sicians build with patients and families inspire so many generous gifts. Grateful patients want to express their gratitude to the physicians who help them through difficult times; it’s part of the healing process. At the same time, many of our physicians are also donors because they believe so strongly in the LifeBridge Health mission.
How does the LifeBridge Health Board and the other Hospital Boards support the Development Committee’s work?
Board members, just like physicians, are very important to our efforts. Our board members are philanthropists and sup-port LifeBridge Health in any way they can. They have deep relationships in the community, and they help us identify and cultivate new donor relationships through their personal and business networks.
What’s the most rewarding thing you’ve witnessed since joining the Development Committee?
I’ve loved seeing the dedication and commitment that so many community members have for LifeBridge Health. Also, it has been very rewarding to wit-ness first-hand the direct impact our donors’ dollars have on LifeBridge Health.
To your point earlier, there is so much competition for donors’ dollars these days. Why do you believe community members give to LifeBridge Health?
The same philosophy of personalized care that we extend to every patient, we also extend to every donor. In other words, we are “donor-centric.” When someone supports LifeBridge Health, the dollars are directed to whatever program or service matters most to that philanthropist.
I believe that there is nothing more im-portant than helping those who are faced with health care challenges. No one should have to struggle through the journey alone and at LifeBridge Health, we stand to-gether as one team to make sure all com-munity members know they have a health care partner they can rely upon. l

WWHEN CARROLL HOSPITAL JOINED FORCES WITH LIFEBRIDGE HEALTH in 2015, LifeBridge Health president and CEO Neil Meltzer noted that “Our number one priority is to make sure that we preserve what makes Carroll Hospital so special…The pride people have in this hospital is palpable. We don’t want that to change.” As Carroll Hospital Founda-tion chair Amber Dahlgreen Curtis tells us, it’s a promise that’s been well kept.
How has the partnership with LifeBridge Health changed the way philanthropy works at Carroll Hospital?
Amber Dahlgreen Curtis: It didn’t change anything. LifeBridge Health has been wonderful in terms of supporting our Foundation and ensuring the dollars raised in Carroll County stay in Carroll County. At the same time, the partner-ship has allowed us to share resources
and realize terrific cost savings and bene-fits that we couldn’t achieve on our own. It’s what you hope for when you join with a larger organization: a good mar-riage of cultures.
Some may assume that the partner-ship means everything is “good,” financially speaking. Is that the case?
We are stronger together, of course, but there will always be a need for philan-thropy. Medical technologies are always changing, and that requires continuous investment. There are also countless services that we provide simply because it’s the right thing to do. Services like women’s and children’s care and hospice: these programs are costly, they aren’t revenue producers, but they are some-thing we absolutely must have in order to care for our community. Philanthropy keeps those types of services going.

What kind of tangible effects have you seen from the Foundation’s fundraising efforts?
Our Tevis Center for Wellness and William E. Kahlert Regional Cancer Center [both of which opened in 2014] immediately come to mind. These are two state-of-the-art additions that wouldn’t have been possible without all of our incredibly generous donors. There are still many people in this community who can remember when we didn’t have a hospital, so it’s amazing to see how far we have come by working together. [Carroll Hospital was built through community grassroots fundraising and opened in 1961.]
If you had to summarize why some-one should give to Carroll Hospital and LifeBridge Health in just a few words, what would you say?
Your gift has the ability to save lives. Again, our cancer center is a great example of that. Patient use has grown by 18 percent since the center opened its doors—that’s more than we ever anticipated. Think of how many lives that touches. Your gift does that. l

CJ Wasson and Dr. Shawn Standard at the Family Society Dinner
CJ Wasson was presented with the Youth Philanthropist of the Year award at the Family Society
Dinner in November. CJ accompanied his parents, Chris and Whitney Wasson, to the event,
which was held at the Center Club in downtown Baltimore. CJ received this award for his
extraordinary fundraising efforts to benefit the Save-A-Limb Fund Fest, held annually at Oregon
Ridge Park. CJ, a grateful patient of Dr. Shawn Standard, raised more than $15,900 to benefit
the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics.
