Army PAs, As we celebrate National PA Week this year, LTC Detro and I want to personally thank each and every one of you for the countless contributions you make to Army Medicine and DoD Beneficiaries on a daily basis. The Physician Assistant profession is growing faster than ever at a time when Americans need quality medical providers in every community. The United States Military and our Army are no different in that need, and you are the invaluable assets that fill that need. LTC Detro and I, along with the entire Army Staff, are extremely proud to recognize the PAs on our healthcare team during National PA Week, October 6-12, 2015. You are part of a collaborative team of professional officers that, along with your combat medics and counterparts, have proudly answered the nation's calling since 1967. As we celebrate PA Week 2015, we also celebrate the Army PA as the country has and will continue to look to you as leaders in the healthcare profession. We encourage you to celebrate and share with everyone in your commands and communities that it is National PA Week. This is our opportunity for us to highlight one another, the PA profession, and all the incredible sacrifices that Army PAs make towards Army Medicine. Collectively, you comprise a unique subset of Physician Assistants that possess extensively diverse skills that encompasses battlefield/operational medicine, rehab/reconditioning, performance optimization, prevention, education, research, command, administration, and of course the various doctoral/subspecialty areas of expertise. In our Army, the Physician Assistant is not only the Soldier's primary care manager, but serves alongside them at all levels from Role 1-point of injury on battlefield to Role 5-restorative and rehabilitative care. No matter the level of care, Army PAs of the Active, Guard, and Reserve formations are always there to answer the call and care for the Solider. We welcome any highlights and photos of you and your community based activities during National PA Week and we will share them in a future Corps Connection. Again, thank you for all you do for our Soldiers, your communities, the Army, the PA profession, and the health of our great Nation. The University of Texas Medical Branch in collabo-ration with the National Aerospace Training and Research (NASTAR) Center in Southampton, PA, is conducting research into the safety training meth-ods that will be used to train future suborbital spaceflight passengers. Volunteers are invited to participate in the experiment and experience a simulated suborbital spaceflight.

The simulated spaceflight environment will be produced using a high-performance centrifuge based sim-ulator. This simulator is capable of generating high onset-offset, sustained acceleration (“G”) forces sim-ilar to those that might be experienced in high-performance aircraft or spacecraft. If you choose to volunteer for the study, you will be trained on various aspects of suborbital spaceflight and then evaluated (via questionnaires, psychological sensors, and basic cognitive tasks) during a full-scale version of the acceleration profile. The maximum G-level you may experience is +4Gz (acceleration aligned in the head-to-toe direction, up to 4 times the force of gravity) and +6Gx (acceleration aligned in the chest-to-back direction, up to 6 times the force of gravity). We will train you on certain techniques that are commonly used to mitigate the physiological effects of G-forces. You may stop your participation at any time without reason or re-percussion. There is no compensation for time, travel, or lodging associated with your participation in this experiment, though the centrifuge experience it-self is free to participants.

Benefits • You will get to experience a hypergravity, high-fidelity, simulated space launch produced by the high-performance centrifuge simulator. • The knowledge obtained from this research study may serve to improve future suborbital spaceflight training protocols. Requirements • Must be ages 18+ • Must be of adequate health as determined by applicable study criteria (most medical conditions, when well-controlled, are acceptable). • Must be able to commit to up to two full, consecutive, days of training (9am – 4:30pm). Training time is based on the training group you are assigned to and cannot be pre-selected. If you or anyone that you know is interested in volunteering to be a research participant, please visit www.utmbamc.com/research.cfm and register for more information.

Old Business Inquired about having all BOD report to SAPA conference on Saturday to help with set-up. This will

be a financial strain on the budget to provide hotel/Per-Diem for an additional day for all BOD. Bob Potter stated he did not need the entire BOD to report on Saturday, as of now, he has enough help but as the conference nears he will advised the BOD if additional help is needed.

Don Black suggested: Entertainment changes and Special performances for Tuesday night: Country and Western Elvis impersonator

Pat Malone will arrange entertainment base on above recommendations Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday will continue with DJ New Business Paul Lowe will reach out to Willie French to filled the position of SAPA’s chaplain. IT position needs

filling will continue to look for the right person and encourage all SAPA BOD to update a current email address.

Donation for auction at SAPA banquet: suggestion was made to encourage all BOD to bring in a por-trait or item that could be auction off at the banquet. Send the secretary a description of the item that you would like to auction and this information will be sent to Bob Potter.

Pay differences of our GS PAs vs NPs in the federal system ( 603 series) still an ongoing issue, how-ever making progress.

Don Black would like to have both General’s as guest speakers at the conference, would also like to have 82nd Airborne chorus perform at the banquet: Don request that Scot Fisher assist with the de-tails and report back to the board.

Scot Fisher will send information to Paul Lowe to send an email blast asking for interest in precept-ing students.

Inquired about Executive Director report on Affiliate members serving on the board as Director at Large. After much discussion, Pat Malone made a motion to appoint a committee and table this is-sue until we could do more research. Jamie Rigoni added a friendly amendment that the BOD re-search 3 option and discuss at next meeting:

Option 1 - Change SAPA to allow non-Army members serve on any BOD position Option 2 - Change BOD composition to create an additional Member at Large position which

can be filled by an associate member Option 3 - Propose no amendments to the bylaws

Committee members. Bob Potter Paul Lowe Pat Malone The Motion was seconded by Frank Piper. This issue was not discuss and will be open for discussion at next meeting.

I was excited to hear of Senators Jon Tester (D-MT) and Jerry Moran (R-KS) bill S. 2134, the “Grow Our Own Di-

rective” (GOOD): Physician Assistant Employment and Education Act of 2015”. Being a former Army medic who took ad-

vantage of the Army’s PA program, I understand first hand how this program will greatly benefit not only our highly trained

medics and corpsman but will enhance high quality providers within the VA system.

I have attached a letter of support on behalf of our organization. Please don’t hesitate to let me know if we can support this

effort in any other way.

Sincerely,

Paul W. Lowe

Executive Director

Society of Army Physician Assistants

October 23, 2015 Dear Senator Tester, On behalf of the 850 members of the Society of Army Physician Assistants (SAPA), thank you for introducing S. 2134, the “Grow Our Own Directive: Physician Assistant Employment and Education Act of 2015”. SAPA strongly supports this bill as it will create educational and employment opportunities for the next generation of com-bat medics who will become Veterans. This legislation takes those with medical healthcare experience gained while serving in the military and provides them with educational assistance for training as physician assistants (PAs) for subsequent employ-ment within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). It also includes standards to improve the VA’s use of educational assis-tance programs to educate and hire PAs. Of most importance to the PAs already serving within the VA system, the bill estab-lishes pay grades and requires competitive pay for PAs employed at the VA. The US Army has greatly benefited with this same concept by taking Army Medics and Navy Corpsmen who served during the Vietnam War and training them in the next level of care. I had personally closely worked with PAs from class #1 in 1973. Their newly learned medical knowledge greatly increased the medical care given to military service members serving in isolated places overseas. Within the first month of their graduation they had proved their value to their patients, unit commanders and the entire healthcare team. PAs have since become valuable assets in every branch of service and in all 50 states. This legislation will take those who have taken great care of our men and women in uniform, enhance their medical knowledge, and place them right back caring our military veterans. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any service promoting this legislation. Sincerely, Paul W. Lowe Executive Director

As our Society continues to reach into the new age and advances, it is exciting to announce that

SAPA has adopted and is beginning to transition into Office and Position specific email addresses. For

years it has always been somewhat problematic when new officers take their elected positions and Com-

mittee Chairs their appointed positions to get the line of communication re-established and flowing

smoothly. This is being resolved with the establishment of permanent Office and Position specific email

addresses. No longer will everyone have to relearn the email of the new President-Elect or forget to up-

date their contact list as a new President-Elect is seated. No longer as the President-Elect transitions into

the position of President or as the President becomes the Immediate Past President will contact lists and

distribution lists have to be updated. Also, with the many contacts outside our Society, i.e., AAPA,

NCCPA, Vet Caucus, etc., communication will not be broken as the email address for the contact person

remains the same.

The only thing changing is the person accessing that email account. Or as a once popular TV series

stated, ‘only the names are changed to protect the innocent’. So as ‘Joe Friday” stated, “we want the

facts and just the facts”, here are the facts: SAPA is beginning to transition to an Office/Position based

email system.

As the Officers and Committee Chairs come on board with this, the email for that position on the

website will be changed to reflect the permanent email address for that position. So far 10 of the 18 (and

hopefully, by the time of this publication, all 18) email accounts have been assigned to the appropriate

Office/Position and is being used by that Office/Position personnel. Below is the list of emails, I encourage

all SAPA members, non-members, interested parties to begin using these email addresses for continuity

of communications.

If you need the assistance of any of the BOD or Committee Chair, please address your communication

to the appropriate email as listed above.

Respectfully Stephen W. Ward, MPAS, PA-C (Ret)

Chair, IT Committee

Dear Fellow PA’s, Hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New year. As we look back on 2015, it has gone so fast. Hope you have been enjoying the e-mail blasts of information that have been sent out over the last several months. We are looking forward to an excellent conference in 2016 and hope you can join us. There will be several important breakout sessions this year with some very important issues that we face and we need your input. To mention a few and one on top of the list is the GS pay disparity be-tween the PAs and NPs. This is a work in progress as we send this out and we plan to push it to comple-tion this time. Please come and share your experiences with us. The more information we can send up the chain, the better our chances of a good outcome. As we endure the pain of ICD 10, our workshop should make you come away a bit more prepared to face the task at hand. Our BOD and committee chairs have been working very hard to make this a rewarding, exciting and worthwhile conference. We have been having a Tele-Conference every other month and this has put us ahead of the timeline in preparing for the April conference. I would like to personally invite each and everyone of you to join us for SAPA 2016 "Moving Forward" conference. I would especially invite all of my former PA students that I so enjoyed at BACH during my time as IPAP Clinical Coordinator. I wish you a prosperous 2016 and a big thanks for what you do each and everyday, taking care of Ameri-ca's best. Respectfully, Donald A. Fellow PA’s,

As I sit here writing, what will be my last Editors Notes, I reflect back during my time as the SAPA Journal Editor-in

-Chief. Close to four years ago, I volunteered and began to perform duties as the SAPA newsletter Editor-in-Chief.

I took over from LTC Detro. I have enjoyed collecting articles for publication along the way. Much like LTC Detro

before me, it has been difficult to obtain information from those PAs who have retired and within the National

Guard/Reserves. For this reason, the majority of the newsletter has focused on the active duty side as I have ac-

cess to this information through numerous sources such as Human Resources Command, Army Medical Specialist

Corps (SP), and open source news articles.

I would like to believe that I have been successful with improving the newsletter but not to the level that I had

hoped. In addition, I have attempted to utilize the newsletter to stimulate the recruitment of PAs for membership

in SAPA; whatever school or course I attended during my time as a PA I would mention that I was the Editor-in-

Chief and attempt to solicit articles for future editions and coax about SAPA memberships.

I am currently serving as an Aeromedical Physician Assistant and after 23 years of faithful service to the U.S Army

and my country; my family and I have decided to retire from active duty. Therefore, I have decided to move on

from my editorial duties. CPT Chad Merfeld, a fellow Aeromedical Physician Assistant has volunteered to replace

me. Chad is extremely excited about this new role and the ability to contribute to our profession. Please provide

him with your support through the writing of articles, provision of newsworthy information, pictures, and other

topics that are of interest to active duty, reserve, and retired military physician assistants.

I will be assisting Chad with the next issue with a anticipated release of June/July 2016. Chad’s email is as follows:

[email protected].

I have enjoyed my time as the editor and hope to see you all at this year’s annual SAPA Conference. So please

take some good pics at the SAPA Conference
