Preface The aim of this Chronological Survey of Precisely Dated Demotic and Abnormal Hieratic Sources, inspired by Thissen's Chronologie der frühdemotischen Papyri (1980) and Pestman's Chronologie égyptienne d'après les textes démotiques (1967),1 is to provide a chronological survey of all Demotic and Abnormal Hieratic texts dated to a precise year or even month or day. It is to a very large extent based on the Database of Demotic and Abnormal Hieratic Texts (DAHT), consultable at http://www.trismegistos.org/daht, which has been and still is being compiled as part of the project Multilingualism and Multiculturalism in Graeco-Roman Egypt, sponsored by a Sofja Kovalevskaja Preis of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung. As such it is a collaborative effort, with the following task division:
Carolin Arlt mummy labels and ostraca Mark Depauw early Demotic and Ptolemaic documentary papyri (and ostraca) Marlies Elebaut graffiti Aikaterini Georgila Roman period documentary papyri Svenja Gülden funerary papyri Hermann Knuf literary papyri Jan Moje inscriptions Franziska Naether paraliterary texts
Working on the geographical distribution of papyrological and epigraphic sources, including Demotic ones, has turned Herbert Verreth into a severe but righteous 'quality control manager', guarding us from many inconsistencies and double entries. The student collaborators Sandra Bronischewski, Britta Derichs, Sahar Eslah and Melanie Kromer have entered a lot of data, especially in the early stages of the database. Melanie Kromer and especially Britta Derichs deserve a special medal for courage and self-sacrifice since they double-checked a previous version of this list against Thissen's Chronologie and Pestman's Chronologie respectively. Jeroen Clarysse, Svenja Gülden, and Bart Van Beek solved various computer problems and Chris Bennett and his website guided me through chronological issues. Apart from directing the team, the concept and layout of this publication as well as its final control and redaction are my own responsability. This Chronological Survey is the first volume in the new series Trismegistos Online Publications, which aims to provide freely downloadable pdf-documents with scholarly tools based upon the Trismegistos database (http://www.trismegistos.org) or parts of it, in this case the DAHT. The idea behind this new series is the tension between stable printed paper editions that gradually grow obsolete on the one hand and online databases that are kept up to date in realtime but are very unstable on the other. One factor is the almost exponential growth of scholarship, which has reduced the average lifespan of publications. Although in the humanities and especially in our field – unlike e.g. in biomedical sciences – five year old publications still tend to be called 'recent' rather than 'ancient', it is clear to everyone that things move faster now than they did a generation ago. Especially scholarly tools such as bibliographies and surveys now age so fast that as a medium printed paper is increasingly replaced by online consultable databases which are continuously revised. This obviously has substantial advantages, but it also has some drawbacks. Firstly, due to their flexibility and

changeability, scholars generally find these online databases hard to cite, which gains relevance in an increasingly bibliometrical scholarly environment. More importantly, when people use the information in the databases for quantificative purposes, the unstable character decreases the traceability of the raw data, which has always been a significant plus of our disciplines when compared with some of the social sciences. Or, to put it in a different way, printed paper has the advantage of providing a stable picture at a given moment in time: a set of data people can work with. For scholarly tools, stable pdf-documents with links to databases changed in realtime seem to me a useful middle way between printed paper and databases, and it is this type of pdf-documents that the present series wants to provide. It should be stable enough to be cited, with new versions being added on a regular but not too frequent basis, e.g. every five or ten years depending on the flow of scholarship. This means that, unlike the database records with which it is linked, the pdf-document will remain unchanged until a new version is provided. This document should therefore be cited as Depauw et al., Chronological Survey of Demotic and Abnormal Hieratic Sources, Version 1.0 February 2007, Köln and Leuven 2008. Introduction The aim of the present work is to provide a chronological survey of all precisely dated Abnormal Hieratic and Demotic sources. For all attested years in the almost twelve centuries between year 21 of Piye (726/725 BC) and year 169 of the Diocletian era (AD 452/453), the date given by the document is provided. For reasons of conciseness and convenience, the Egyptian system referring to the rank of months in seasons (e.g. ibd-2 Ax.t) is replaced by the names of the months as known from Greek and Coptic. The following table provides a conversion:
ibd-1 ‘Month 1’
ibd-2 ‘Month 2’
ibd-3 ‘Month 3’
ibd-4 ‘Month 4’
nA hrw 5 n Hb
Ax.t ‘Inundation’
Thoth Phaophi Hathyr Choiak –
pr.t ‘Winter’
Tybi Mecheir Phamenoth Pharmouthi –
Smw ‘Summer’

If a bilingual document, generally combining Greek and Demotic, is precisely dated by chronological information in Greek (or any other language or script) only, that date is provided. If the Demotic itself is dated but the Greek has another date, I have generally made abstraction of the latter. If the accompanying (Greek) tax receipt or note of registration allows greater precision, however, I have in most cases limited the possible chronological range of Demotic contracts and other documents dated to a month.
A few exceptions notwithstanding, only a single date has been provided for each document. For those that have additions on later dates (other instalments of payment in tax receipts, notes of registration under contracts, daybook accounts, ...), only that of the principal text or, if all texts are of equal stature, the latest date is listed.
The equivalent in the Julian calendar has been converted using F. Grieshaber, Date Converter for Ancient Egypt, 2002–2007, freely accessible at http://aegyptologie.online-resourcen.de/Date_converter_for_Ancient_Egypt. This tool generally takes the most recent chronological developments into account, including those important for Demotic documents, such as the alleged skipping of years 17 and 18 by Ptolemy II Philadelphos (for which see below).
For each precisely dated text the inventory number and the standard publication is listed. Furthermore the Trismegistos (TM) number is provided, which establishes a clickable link with www.trismegistos.org/daht, where more and possibly updated information about the document is available.
This survey hopes to reflect the current chronological communis opinio, but has no aspirations to solve longstanding debates about difficult problems. Nonetheless, following remarks seem necessary.2

1. Calendar systems The overwhelming majority of Demotic texts is dated by means of a regnal year3 and a reference to the traditional Egyptian calendar, with 12 months of 30 days and 5 epagomenal days, starting on Thoth 1. A sixth intercalary day was officially introduced through the so-called Canopic reform in 238 BC, but was only implemented during Roman times, when the so-called Julian (or 'Alexandrian') calendar was introduced.4 Even then the traditional Egyptian year remained in use next to the Alexandrian calendar, probably mainly for astrological purposes. Unless specified otherwise, all dates listed below have been interpreted as referring to the Egyptian calendar before the Roman period and to the Alexandrian calendar from Augustus onwards. From year 21 of Ptolemy II Philadelphos until the very beginning of the reign of Ptolemy V Epiphanes, a so-called financial calendar was in use, which followed the traditional Egyptian year but had a different New Year's Day. For a long time it was generally accepted that this was invariably Mecheir 1, but it has recently become clear that this cannot be correct.5 According to our present state of knowledge, the financial year is only rarely referred to in the dates of Demotic documents, except in some double dates (see below). Dates according to the financial calendar listed below have been marked by (F). Most of them are Greek ostraca with Demotic subscriptions. In the Macedonian calendar a year consists of 12 or 13 lunar months and starts at the ascension date of the reigning pharaoh. Although apparently never used in Demotic, it is important because the eponymous priests in Alexandria and Ptolemais are nominated for a Macedonian year, and some contracts that can only be precisely dated because of their presence in the dating preamble have been listed below.
2. Double dates Double dates are only mentioned below if the Demotic texts themselves provide two regnal years or two dates. The cases where in a bilingual text a different date is given in Greek as in Demotic have not explicitly been identified as such. The following types of 'real' double dates are found below (from common to less frequent):
A. Regnal year and financial year (HA.t-sp X nty ir / i.ir (ir) HA.t-sp X+1) This is very commonly attested from the second half of the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphos until the very beginning of the reign of Ptolemy V Epiphanes.
3 Referring to the ruling pharaoh or emperor up to Diocletian, from which time onwards the so-called Era of the Martyrs or the Era of Diocletian is used instead, counting years from his accession in AD 284 / 285. The only other real example of an era in Demotic is the reference to years 17 and 32 of the so-called Callipic cycle (or era) in the astronomical papyrus TM 45557 = Berlin, Staatliche Museen P. 13146 + 13147 Ro = Proc. Amer. Philos. Soc. 125 (1981), p. 312-316, for which see A. Jones, Calendrica I: New Calippic Dates, in: ZPE 129 (2000), p. 147-148. There are a few cases where the regnal years of the reigning pharaoh's predecessor are continued: Harronnophris / Chaonnophris (? unless these are two names for a single rebel pharaoh), Marcus Aurelius / Commodus, Caracalla / Septimius Severus, and Valerianus / Gallienus. 4 For a discussion on this Alexandrian reform and the complications for the conversion of dates in the early years of Augustus, see most recently D. Hagedorn, Zum ägyptischen Kalender unter Augustus, in: ZPE 100 (1994), p. 211-222; A. Jones, Calendrica II: Date Equations from the Reign of Augustus, in: ZPE 129 (2000), p. 159-166; C. Bennett, The Early Augustan Calendars in Rome and Egypt, in: ZPE 142 (2003), p. 221-240 and id., The Early Augustan Calendars in Rome and Egypt: Addenda et Corrigenda, in: ZPE 147 (2004), p. 165-168 (compare also C. Bennett's website Egyptian Royal Genealogy, the Alexandrian Reform). The converted dates found below do not take these complications into account and may therefore be incorrect by one or two days: Demotic dates in Roman times may very well often be those of the Egyptian wandering year anyway, so there is always an uncertainty of a couple of days minimum. 5 There are several attestations, including Demotic ones, which confirm that it could begin before 1 Mecheir in the later years of Ptolemy III: compare CPR XVIII, p. 82-89.

B. Dual rulers / Coregencies In Demotic the only example of a coregency explicitly characterized as such by means of a double date is that of Kleopatra III and Ptolemy X Alexander I (year 11 = 8 until 17 = 14; BC 107 – 101). Other Demotic double dates seem to refer to dual rulers, such as Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II and Kleopatra II (or Harsiesis?) (year 39 = 1; BC 131), Ptolemy X Alexander I and Ptolemy IX Soter II (year 26 = 29; BC 89 – 87), and Ptolemy XII Neos Dionysos and Berenike IV (year 24 = 2 until year 26 = 4; BC 59 – 55).
C. Transitions In a few cases the scribe seems to have marked a change of power by means of a double date. This is the case for the succession of Ptolemy VI Philometor by Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II (year 36 = 25; BC 146 – 145), Kleopatra Berenike III by Ptolemy XII Neos Dionysos (year 2 = 1, BC 81 – 80), and Gordianus by Maximinus Thrax (year 4 = year 1; AD 240 – 241).
D. Dual regnal series There are two sets of examples with references to dual kingships: year 36 = 1 of Ptolemy VI Philometor as king of Egypt and Syria respectively (BC 145) and year 19 = 4 of Kleopatra VII Philopator as queen of Egypt and territories assigned to her by Antony.
E. Civil 'Alexandrian' year = Wandering 'Egyptian' year In the Roman period occasionally an Alexandrian / Egyptian double date of the type Tybi 18 n pA Wynn = Mecheir 1 n pA rmt-Kmy is provided.
3. Years 17 and 18 of Ptolemy II Philadelphos Ever since Pestman, Chronologie, p. 18, it has been assumed that originally Ptolemy II Philadelphos counted his Egyptian regnal years from the death of his father (283 / 282 BC), but switched to another system, taking into account his coregency (starting in 285 / 284 BC), in the middle of his reign. Supposedly he skipped years 17 and 18, which were at that time unattested in Demotic or Greek sources. Recently Muhs has argued that this change of counting basis is in fact imaginary and that the two regnal years are indeed attested.6 Although the last word has not yet been said about this chronological problem, I have followed Muhs's reconstruction.
4. The 'Oxyrhynchos-ostraca' A difficult problem is the date of the ostraca in Cologne and Pisa, traditionally known as the 'Oxyrhynchos-ostraca', although probably rather from one of the oasis or an unknown place on the caravan-routes (cf. DBL p. 813 § 14).7 I have accepted Kaplony-Heckel's assignment to the reign of Ptolemy VIII, although two ostraca listed below seem to cast doubt over this identification. The reading HA.t-sp 9 in line 4 of O. Pisa 925, accepted by the DBL p. 631, seems possible, but would be a very early attestation of the rule of Ptolemy VIII (although perhaps not entirely impossible if the double dates for his years 10 and 11 below are accepted). Perhaps reading year 29 might be another possibility. The reading HA.t-sp 24.t in line 1 of O. Pisa 936 on the other hand seems entirely certain and does not really fit with the regnal years attested for Ptolemy VIII. One could opt assigning it to Ptolemy VI, but this would imply that all regnal years ranging between 25 and 36 attested in the 'Oxyrhynchos-ostraca' could belong to either Ptolemy VI or Ptolemy VIII.
5. Double dates for Ptolemy VI and Ptolemy VIII Most of the double dates allegedly referring to the reigns of Ptolemy VI and Ptolemy VIII are retrospective or have recently been read otherwise.8 I have therefore eliminated the following two documents from the list:
TM 53581 = Egypt, Medinet Habu, in situ = Graff. Med. Habu 48 (year [21?] = 10, Phaophi 15? – Hathyr 14) BC 160 Nov 20 year 22? = 11, Phaophi 20
TM 46696 = Cairo, Egyptian Museum CG 31211 = P. Cairo 2 31211
Both may date to the joint reign of Ptolemy X and Kleopatra III, years 9 = 12 (TM 53581) and year 8 = 11 (TM 46696) respectively. This would make P. Cairo 2 31211 the earliest date for this coregency, eight days before P. Grenf. 2 23a. For Graff. Med. Habu 48, see the discussion on C. Bennett's website.
6. The 29th dynasty I have followed J.-Y. Carrez-Maratray, Psammétique le tyran. Pouvoir, usurpation et alliances en Méditerranée orientale au IVe siècle av. J.-C., in: Transeuphratène 30 (2005), p. 37-63 in his (and Devauchelle's) reconstruction of the 29th dynasty: Akoris (years 1-6; marked in the table as 'first reign'), interrupted by Psammouthis (years 1-2), and Akoris again (wHm-xa year 1-8; marked as 'second reign') followed by four months of Nepherites II.
7. Harsiesis TM 45932 (P. Eheverträge 11 D + Z; Heidelberg, P. dem. 10 + 11) is dated to a pharaoh Harsiesis son of Osiris, which has long been identified with a rebel Harsiesis under the reign of Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II. Recent research (see A.-E. Véïsse, Les revoltes égyptiennes (StudHell 41), Leuven 2004, p. 48-52) has shed some doubt on the existence of such a rebellion, as a consequence of which the papyrus would have to be redated to the fourth century BC. I am not enterily convinced by the argument and find the early date palaeographically problematic, for which reason I prefer to stick to the 'traditional' date.
* * *
In their early Demotic and Graeco-Roman chronologies, Thissen and Pestman listed 162 and 1632 precisely dated texts respectively. The current list has over 4080 entries, which illustrates how Demotic studies and the number of texts available have boomed in the last 27 to 40 years (since Thissen 1980 and Pestman 1967). At least for the Graeco-Roman period, however, the graphs below show that the chronological distribution pattern for papyri and ostraca has barely changed in that time.

This stability of the chronological distribution, even after 40 years of Demotistic scholarship, makes it rather unlikely that future publications will complete upset the general picture. Its significance, if any, is a difficult question which I will address in more detail elsewhere.
