Appropriate Footwear for School:

Parents are asked to ensure students wear appropriate footwear to school. This is generally a sneaker or sport shoe that provides good support for the student’s growing foot. These shoes also prove to be safe around other students when there is a rush and do not inflict painful damage to others.

Cowboy boots, thongs or strappy sandals are not acceptable footwear for school.

School Behaviour Focus:

Throughout the year teachers will be focussing on specific behaviours in their classrooms in relation to our “Be” rules.

This week’s focus is “Be An Active Learner.” Students are asked to be prepared for work by always completing their homework.

Weekly Attendance Rate:

The attendance rate for Week 4, Term 4 was 88.2%. I encourage parents to notify the school of student absence. Due to the new round of illnesses currently circulating throughout the town. Parents it would be beneficial to provide a doctor’s certificate for absences longer than 3 days.

Parents you must notify the school of the reason for your child’s absence. If the school is not notified we are re-quired by legislation to telephone you. If your child is going to have a prolonged absence you need to contact the school regarding this.

Parenting Ideas:

The Television.

For most of us the television is simply part of our lives. There are a few things you can do to make sure it is positive influence in your child’s life.

If you do not get home until after the good quality children’s programs, record them so you can have a few minutes to race around like a mad thing while your child has a lovely little rest in front of the box.

Don’t let them sit alone in the loungeroom watching the news. They don’t realise that the dreadful scene they are watching is not happening just outside their window. Catch the late news instead.

Show them you need to read the television program to know what is on the television at what time.

Find out if SBS has any suitable programs in languages that your child hears at home. Make an effort to watch these with your child. It is important that your child works out that his other language is on television too.

Talk about television shows. If you all sit and watch NCIS: Los Angeles, talk about what you like and don’t like, who is whose favourite etc.

Explain that the advertisements are trying to get you to buy something. For a long time children seem not to realise that these are an interruption to the program.

Prep Students Pick Up and Drop Off: - All Prep parents please note this.

Just a reminder that a parent or adult carer must drop off all Prep student to the Prep and pick them up from the un-dercover area each afternoon. This applies to all Prep students except for those who come on buses where other ar-rangements have been made.

SCHOOL NEWS

NUDE FOOD DAY EVERY WEDNESDAY

All students are encouraged to participate in Nude Food Wednesday at our school. Students bringing nude food in their lunchboxes have the opportunity to get points for their sporting house.

Visitors to the School:

Parents and visitors please note that if you are visiting the school for any reason that you should proceed to the office and sign in first.

All volunteers in the school must have completed compulsory training now before they can volunteer in classrooms. Please contact Kerry at the office for times of training over the next few weeks.

Teachers and staff will ask you if you have signed in if they are unsure of why you are here.

School Priorities:

Our sign advertises that the school has a number of priorities that it strives to keep at the forefront t of your child’s educa-tion. These include literacy, numeracy and working memory. To achieve these priorities we have to work on the main factor that underpins learning in many arenas –READING.

Our main priority is READING!

Did you know that one of the best ways to expand a child’s vocabulary is through wide reading?

Younger children who are read to regularly have higher levels of vocabulary knowledge. (Snell, Hindman, & Wasik, 2015)

Older children who read regularly are exposed to words that they might not hear in every day speech. Beck, McKeown, & Kucan, 2013)

New Attendance Laws:

Commencing at the beginning of this term, the school must now have parent/guardian notification of a child’s non-attendance on the day they are not at school.

Therefore, if your child is sick or absent for any reason, you must contact the school by phone, email or signed and dated letter to let us know the reason your child is away on the day they are away. You cannot get your other children to give us a verbal reason.

If we have not been notified then the school must make contact with you by phone or by a home visit to clarify why the student is absent.

Please help us with the implementation of this new law into the school.
