PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It's strange how we learn about things. I got a no-tice on my cell phone a few days ago that someone had entered a “like” on the Doctor’s Woodshop Facebook page. I don't usually pay much attention to that but I noticed that the name was Aaron Meredith. I had a great uncle named Aaron so I was curious though I doubted it was him since he died 30 years ago. Turns out that this Aaron is a wood-turner in North Carolina who specializes in snake-skin pens (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ3l6SrviM4). This is a spe-cialty you don't come across every day. Just out of curiosity I ordered a couple of kits since I'm always looking for new sources of material. These are very high quality pen kits; even better than the kits from Berea (http://www.bereahardwoods.com/). If I ever get around to turning one I will bring it in for show and tell.

Thanks again to all those people who participated in the auction last month. The turnout was good, we made some money, and the day was a lot more pleasant than we've had the past couple of years. Yes, the auction is a hassle to organize. Yes, it's an imposition on the host (particularly when they are trying to sell their house). But, it’s also a lot of fun. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (CONTINUED)

strating anymore. I remember the last time he was here, the microwave drying of the bowl ended badly, but it was most entertaining and memorable. His use of the ability Madrone to move like there is no to-morrow creates vessels of interesting and unexpected form. Moreover, he is also an outstanding technical turner, making the right cut at the right time. You know that's very high on my list of skills to evaluate a woodturner. I'm looking forward to his visit. To allow maximum time for the demonstration, we will make the opening segment of the meeting a little shorter. Also, we will need to leave a little more time to clean up. Although for the life of me, I can't figure out how the cup shavings that I generated last month wound up as dust on a table across the hall. I think we got painted with somebody else's dirty brush. Anyway, hope to see all of you at the meeting. — Mike

NWWT WILL HOST CHRISTIAN BURCHARD SEPTEMBER 3 -5, 2015 NWWTs is excited to have Christian Burchard as our featured demonstrator at our regular September meeting (Thursday, Sept 3) where he will demonstrate his techniques for turning thin hollow forms from wet Madrone. In addition, Christian will present an all-day demo on Friday (Sept 4) and an all-day hands-on class on Saturday (Sept 5). Both all-day sessions will run from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM and will be held in Cot-tage 5 at the Multnomah Arts Center (7688 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR 97219). The fee for the all-day demo is $35 and for the hands-on class it is $125. Participants in the all-day demo and the all-day class should plan to provide their own lunch – bring something or go to a nearby restaurant. Christian is encour-aging those attending the all-day demo to bring a piece they're having trouble with or need help with. He will review the piece and show what he might do with it. Those taking the class can choose to turn a hol-low form or a sphere. If doing a sphere, it is suggested that you bring your favorite wood, but if you have none, there will be wood available at the class. And of course, bring your own tools and safety equipment. The hands-on class is limited to 8 participants, so register as soon as possible. Register for the class or the all-day demo on our web site at www.northwestwoodturners.com.

Christian was born in Germany in 1955 and has been living in the United States since 1978. He opened a studio in Southern Oregon in 1982, and currently resides on the outskirts of Ashland, Oregon. His early fo-cus was on furniture and interiors, but gradually shifted to woodturning and sculpture, moving between vessel-oriented forms and sculptural turning. His work has been included in most of the major turning-related exhibits of the last twenty something years and is exhibited widely throughout the US. His pieces are part of many public and private collections. His current work includes wall sculptures and freestanding sculptural objects. He works almost exclusively with Pacific Madrone; the burls that grow within the roots of these trees are his favorite. He works with wet wood, and by cutting or turning his forms very thin he takes advantage of and encourages the changes that occur as the wood dries.

For information about Christian and examples of his work visit www.burchardstudio.com.

OCTOBER PROGRAM — JIM HALL Jim Hall is an accomplished and versatile wood artist. He was a founding member of the Cascade Wood-turners Association 25 years ago, and has been a member of NWWT for many years. His work includes Bin Pho-inspired thin-walled, pierced and air brushed pieces, intricately carved hollow forms, and rosettes and turned boxes made and embellished using a rose engine lathe. He continually explores new techniques and methods to challenge and add to his skills producing imaginative and excellently executed work. He graciously shares his knowledge and experience with anyone showing an interest, and will, no doubt, pro-vide us with an informative demonstration.

AUGUST ANNUAL PICNIC AND AUCTION

The picnic and auction on August 8th was a great success! There were around 35 attendees with 29 registered bidders who spent about $2600, netting us about $1600 after expenses. A big THANK YOU to David Wil-liams who once again allowed us to use his home for this event. Also, thanks to all who helped organize, setup, and run the auction. Special thanks to Rockler, Woodcraft, North Woods Figured Wood, Doctor’s Woodshop for their generous support, and to our members who donated items for auction. Can’t forget to thank all who purchased items either! Auctioneer David Colsen did a great job pushing the bidding up and keep-ing the auction moving along, all the while being engaging and entertain-ing. For those who were not there, see the next page for a glimpse of what you missed.
