150th Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners May 2017 THE CHIP FLYER From the President’s Notebook With May comes the end of the Woodturning 101 program. With this year’s classes we guided about a dozen people through the program. Next fall we will only have spots for 8 students and there are about 4 spots still open. I would like to again thank the instructors for their time and efforts to make the program a success. Our Spring competition at Exotic Woods had a great showing of the clubs talent. It was fantastic to see the new-segmented class so well entered. The number of overall entrants was impressive and made most of the categories close to judge. I would like to congratulate the winners and let you know that we will get you the missing ribbons at our June meeting. Thanks to Exotic-Woods for supporting the Guild and hosting the event again this year. Those who wandered down to Orchard Park, NY on May 27 to see Beth Ireland (http://bethireland.net) had a very interesting day. Being Memorial Day weekend, the locals were limited in numbers so our group was great for their demo. Beth showed how to work through turning a small guitar or banjo, from body to the tip of the neck. She runs a program to develop professional woodturners at the Centre for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine and after seeing her skills at this demo, you can understand why she is so well qualified to head this program. This month’s hands-on evening will be our yard sale again this year. I hope to have Brian run the meeting, as I will be doing a demo at Thames Valley that evening. You have a few days left to get into your shops and sort through the stuff you have doubles or triples of and bring them in to see if other guild members want to buy them. Our Annual General meeting will end our season. You will get the yearly review info in the next few days to read over before the meeting. It looks like all the current executive members whose terms are up have agreed to continue on for another term. I would like to thank them for the support they have provided to the guild for the past 2 years and look forward to working with them in the coming year again. Our final demo of the year will be done by Don Svob, covering using CA glue as a finishing. Lloyd Butler Coming up June 8th Annual Garage Sale June 15th Annual General Meeting and demo of CA finishing by Don Svob. Remember that if you put in an order for Starbond CA with Stockroom Supply, they will bring it to the meeting so you will not need it shipped. Make sure you get your order in a couple of days before the meeting (June 15th) so that they have time to get everything pull together. Thanks a lot to Don for arranging this with them. I want to extend thanks again to all the volunteers who have stepped up to help throughout the year. Without the additional support, the guild could not run as smoothly as it does. Just a few of the tasks our volunteers do throughout the year includes organizing the kitchen snacks and drinks
