  • A Brief About Us

1The bird does not sing beause it has a reason: It sings because it has a song.

We are delighted to share that in the last 15 years, besides our IT education, craft promotions and skill development initiatives for women/ youth, we have convened 8 international and above 10 national conferences, positioned several exhibitions and published over 6 books on ancient India’s civilization, culture and history.

thThe 15 Year was celebrated with a grand Ganga Utsava, wherein we celebrated the History, Traditions and the interesting accounts and Artistic forms of Maa Ganga by renowned national and international scholars. The Conference and Exhibition was inaugurated by eminent personalities and the Closing of the 3 weeks’ Exhibition was by Chief of Army Gen.(Dr) Vipin Rawat.

Conceptualized in 2001, Draupadi Dream Trust has been working for almost two decades on ancient Indian Civilization and Cultural Continuity, with special focus on Vedic and Mahabharata period. It derives its name and inspiration from the historical Mahabharata Epic’s Panchala Princess, Draupadi. Registered in 2003, at the Pandavas’ city state-Indraprastha (New Delhi), it is a

Not-For-Profit, Charitable Organization working with the Mission to

Create a better understanding and appreciation of our deep rooted cultural continuity and ancient history, via revival of ancient era tangible and intangible Heritage.

Help the women /youth / local community realize and build their own capabilities, so that they can be an asset to themselves, and thus to family and society.

The Trust is working at the birthplace of Draupadi, Kampiliya, the famous capital of erstwhile Panchala Mahajanapada, in Dist. Farrukhabad, UP, at Pandava city Indraprastha, and organizes awareness programs in other areas of India too. It follows the, method of Research, Advocacy, Awareness, Training and Program Implementation, to optimize local growth opportunities in Cultural Tourism, in synergy with local Culture, Craft, Traditions and History. conducted a study from 2004 – 06 in Panchala, on ‘Development Opportunities for local youth / women in Cultural Tourism’, prepared a DPR for Panchala capital Kampilya’s development and got project sanctioned for the same.

Why Cultural Heritage? A proper understanding of our Common Cultural Heritage is crucial to creating a better understanding and appreciation of our nation’s cultural continuity and history. It also helps in proper perspective of gender parity, and making us understand the ancient systems of social engineering where women have been equal partners in progress, and caste and creed bias did not divide society.

    Why Women and Culture needs our attention? The p e r c e p t i o n s c r e a t e d o v e r c e n t u r i e s o f misrepresentations about certain periods of history,

and the personalities connected to that, have adversely influenced the thinking about liberated women of our country. A relook on the cultural aspects of status of progressive women is needed, and we believe, ‘Let’s start from the very beginning… a very good place to start…when you sing you read, you read with A B C, when you sing you sing with DO RE ME” (Film, Sound of Music), and when you talk of progressive women, you begin with Draupadi! CHAIRPERSON’S NOTE

    Dear Friends

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our supporters, well wishers, Patrons, Advisors and Volunteers/ Members for continuing to repose faith in our dedicated work for ancient Cultural Heritage and empowerment of women/ youth..

With the grace of Almighty and good wishes of all our well wishers like you we have tackled the delays due to elections and the disruptions and upheaval because of COVID 19. The year 2019-20 started on new hopes of a stable government but ended on the confusion created by unexpected Virus spread. Compliments to our visionary leaders governing our nation that our country has managed to minimize its spread and took timely steps to prepare to meet all challenges faced by public and institutions. The medical fraternity is equally praiseworthy for their great services in containment and treatment thereby bringing relief to thousands. The role of NGO’s in ensuring food supplies reaches the needy, especially the RSS Cadres, is commendable.

The COVID 19 has brought out some amazing positive

aspects of humanity and also taught us all many lessons

on role of nature connectivity with human life. Pleasant

images of clean rivers and unpolluted air after few

weeks of Lockdown was truly eye opener, as it was clear

that we humans are responsible for the dirt and pollution

and it is time we re-structured a new normal of living in

harmony with nature. Also remarkable was the

realization that prevention is the best cure against

unknown virus, and that immunity boosting methods of

natural systems like Ayurveda are being recognized by

people at large. ‘Dadi Maa ki puria aur karha’ is really

picked up, indirectly reposing faith in nature and self

protection. We pray that the lessons learnt will become

    integral to our lives now.

thFresh from celebrating the 15 Year of the Trusts

thFoundation on 15 December 2018, with a very

successful Ganga Utsav with International Conference

and Exhibition, the Trust decided to devote the FY

2019-20 for deeper and wider research, promotion and

advocacy of the tangible and intangible aspects of Epic

Bharat. Thus an outreach of the achievements of the

Trust was scheduled with remarkable support of our

well wishers. As IIC collaborated for Book Discussion

on Draupadi and Her Panchala, with eminent

Panelists, they also combined it with a presentation of

our production, Dukh Devi Draupadi Ka, a Kathak

    Dance Drama.

We were highly privileged to get a 15 minutes meeting

with the Honorable President of India Shri Ram Nath

Kovind, to present to him our work on Mahabharata. His

inspiration advise led to the formulation of our dream

project tiltled Mahabharat Shodh Center, for which we

also received an encouraging message from the

    Honorbale President of India.

As our deep work on ancient cities became known at wider circles, we were invited to various platforms to present the research. Thus Vivekanad International

Foundation provided platform for Indraprastha and India Think invited us to Ayodhya to present the ancient linkages between Kampilya Ayodhya and Mithila.

A series of Talks and articles on ancient Bharatiya ‘sabhyata and sanskriti’, and planning for the larger Mahabharata project has made this year very interesting, grounded and productive in meeting our objective of creating a better understanding and appreciation of ancient culture, history and heritage of Maa Bharti. Nourishing the roots of our civilization wealth has been very satisfying. As we finalize the printing of the book Ganga: The River of Sanatan Civilization, we take another step forward in awareness of our ‘sanatan sanskriti’ or ‘eternal cultural’ value.

Our work of empowerment and development of Devi Draupadi’s auspicious place Kampilya continues and we pray that soon the Uttar Pradesh government will

give attention to our request to restore the name of Kampilya Janpada, undoing the injustice of 1714, of naming the area Farrukhabad, done in the name of Farruk Shaiya, son of Aurangzeb.

We once again thank all our supporters and look forward

to the generous blessings and cooperation for a better

Bharata, for women/ youth and our cultural values.

    April 2019- March 2020

Mahabharata Project: Research, Publication, Advocacy and Promotion

After almost 15 years work on the places linked to ancient India of Vedic times and mentioned in the Epic narratives,

especially Dwapara period of Kurukshetra War, we realized that the more we find the less we seem to know. The depth

and width of knowledge submerged in the ocean of our ancient texts is phenomenal. The limitations created, in the last

about 1000 years, in the study of our ancient 'Itihasa' / history have several reasons, including its constrained placing

as a religious text by western scholars of the Schools of Divinity structure. Due the sustained disconnect with our past

literature even in our own country, the world's largest Epic, the Mahabharata, has sadly so far been studied only as a

great poetic work or a philosophical treatise. A closer look reveals that it is a storehouse of information on our sacred

geography and past historical events that gave rise to the great philosophy of Bhartiya Darshan. It is this that made us

    the 'Vishwa Guru'.

Realizing the gaps in the proper study and research in this field we conceptualized a project on for a wide research and

documentation of the neglected aspect of ancient 'Itihasa and Sacred Geography, restricting the scope to the

knowledge from the epic Mahabharata. The initial effort is to bring together scholars of ancient civilization and

culture, and consolidate available data on multiple aspects like places, art and architecture, governance, social

engineering, health systems, social life, etc. The Trust members and associates have been interacting to iron out

wrinkles and structure a long term holistic project of national relevance, also having Tourism potential, so people get

    connected to it.

  • Visit to Purana Qila and structure designated 'Humayun's Tomb'

On request and in team of Shri Tarun Vijay, Chairperson-National Monument Authority, Ministry of Culture, Government of India

Objective of this Report: UNDERLYING PRINCIPLE- Truth endures and lives for all, even tourists. So our endeavor should be to showcase the Truth at our auspicious and significant tourist / heritage/ historical places that have survived centuries, despite all odds, to tell us their tale .....

A Brief Report on current issues, some initial feedback and suggestions on misguided developments at Purana Qila and Humayun Tomb.

th28 Sept 2019 Visit to Purana Qila and structure designated 'Humayun's Tomb'

    Some initial feedback and suggestions.

    th28 Sept 2019

Purana Qila: Tourist experience should have the factual holistic cultural journey of the area.

    1. The displays of confiscated artifacts have brought in little better sense of perspective of Bharat’s antiquity, among the general scholars or the reasonably educated / aware citizen’s on ancient Bharat. However for masses who visit this place daily the place, some efforts are desirable for providing more details, and publicity / informative boards.

    2. The newly constructed- Date of its construction to be prominently mentioned, along with purpose of the structure created. The red stone building has been given a mediaeval look. This is an undesirable precedent on several counts –

    (a) India has always been a multi-cultural country and its landscape of built heritage has been reflecting this since very long, and this continuity is important to showcase India’s Cultural strength of unity in diversity.

    (b) ‘creating’ a new structure of mediaeval look is fiddling with history as few years hence it will be taken as a construction of mediaeval times.

    (C) A very wrong impression, that only one type of civilization/ culture existed in his historic Purana Qila, gets percolated, harming factual antiquity and

history of this place (kindly see brief list of rulers here).

    3. Showcasing the Excavated site, under a high tech controlled transparent structure, will provide a good Archaeological Experience to visitors and add to their knowledge of our nation’s cultural journey. We had already submiited some designs in 2017/ 18 in our presentation to then Secretary Culture in presence of then DG ASI (2017).

    4. Purana Qila Site Museum: The illuminated visuals of the excavated site are very impressive

    (a) Material from site excavation should include the shreds of PGW found during

Excavations here and nearby region like the site of the ‘designated’ Humayun’s Tomb area/ others.

    (b) For other excavated pieces, it could be helpful to have label mentioning ‘pieces from ancient Indraprastha / Delhi areas of Mehrauli etc (with a line about name of Mehrauli) and like wise for other Delhi areas like Sarban (current Raisina Hill region) etc. This will give a wider and more authentic understanding of the pieces displayed.

    (c) Maps depicting Mahabharata / ancient period should ideally show all places as part of Bharata, with a bracketed line ‘now known as Pakistan /

19The bird does not sing beause it has a reason: It sings because it has a song.

  • Visit to Purana Qila and structure designated 'Humayun's Tomb'

Afghanistan/ Bangladesh/ Burma etc, to show the factual geography of that period. Current Map is not so clear on that.

    (d) The Museum should also have a graphic visual presentation of the physical transformations that happened at this place since several centuries and then post partition. Example- Quotes from books (ancient, Sultanat / Mediaeval/ British times) that mention Indrapath Qila, Notification of Indrapath and Purana Qila, Archival Photographs from Pre- partition British Records of the Purana Qila, its Revenue District records, photos of the concrete

thhabitation till early 20 century, etc.

Suggestions for further enhancing Tourist’s factual knowledge and experience at Purana Qila

    1. Ticket Counter building exterior should be either ancient or Modern look, to reflect either the textual historicity of the place or the additions as latest modern Tourist facility.

    2. Incorporation of some Battery operated Golf Carts, to be parked at Parking for senior citizens/ handicapped visitors/ physically weak visitors.

    3. Audio at ticketing counter with brief name announcements of the various points within the complex.

    4. The arches at entry of the main Qila Gate could have the traditional ‘dwarpals’ statues / or could be place for the ‘Sarthi’ of the propose ‘Rath’ to take the visitors for a ‘audio’ visual historical journey round the Qila interiors.

    5. Rath to tell the history of the Qila, the various rulers who ruled from here, in chronological order, and also some significant events of history that happened here.

    6. The details of such events to be graphically also showcased in some of the Cells on the right side of the entry inside the main Gate.

    7. As lest is devoted to the display of the archaeological

finds and antiquities, the right side cells and the new

cells being developed near the point of the Light &

Sound Show, to be devoted for the showcasing the

Inscriptions linked to Indraprastha and telling the

historical events- with some details of the same.

    8. Historical story to start from Khandavprastha, the

events leading to the Pandavas being given the five

areas of the Kuru Mahajanapada and the making of

    Indraprastha. Ref the Mahabharata Book.

    9. Post Pandava from Texts of ancient, Sultanat,

    Mediaeval and Bristish records.

    10. Dioramas and digital displays suggested

    11. Revival of the water body on natural lines also

    suggested.

    Monument Designated as Humayun's Tomb

    1. Is this designation of a single name to a Tomb having

many graves appropriate, especially when the name

of Humayun is not even mentioned there?

    2. We were explained that the replica of this monument

will be displayed within the underground Museum

created. Besides the architectural and artistic

information of this structure, what is the other

content of the Museum to be given within the large

    halls created deep underground?

    3. On the Renovation vs Conservation matter Dr Jamal

Hasan Director (retd) ASI, will be a better person to

give a studied opinion. I can only say that the

    antiquity

During the conversation it was revealed by the architect

that though there are several graves within this building

but there is only one with a female’s name), others have

20 The bird does not sing beause it has a reason: It sings because it has a song.

  • Mahabharata Project: Research, Publication, Advocacy and Promotion

no name on them. Thus while answering the question of

whether Dara Shikoh Tomb is here, answer revealed that

there is no surety about the actual identity of these tombs

    here., not even of Humayun’s!

As per our little knowledge we have come across in Abul

Fazal’s Aine-e- Akbari that Humayuns wife made his

Tomb at Kilokri, which is not Nizamuddin or Purana

Qila area (note- Nizamuddin is prior to Humayun, so

this place was already known by his name and Kilokri is

    much further away from here).

    1. Some Historical proof of location of Humayun’s

    Tomb.

While going through texts for my articles on History of

Indraprastha (2016) I noticed an extract from Abul

    Fazal’s book Aine – e - Akbari. I have given the text

below which gives Kelukhari as the burial (final)

place of Humayun in this book. It is well documented

that Humayun’s wife took the initiative to build a

special Tomb for him, and records from the horse’s

    mouth say…

    Ain-E-Akbari-Vol-II …. (some extracts) —”Muizz-ud-

din Kai Kubad (1286-9) founded another city on the

banks of the Jumma called Kelukhari. Amir Khusrau in

his poem the ‘’Qiranu s Sadain’ eulogizes this city and

its palace. It is now the last resting-place of Humayun

where a new and splendid monument has been erected.”

I learn from reliable sources that Kelukhari is current

Kilokri, which is Maharani Bagh area, nearer

Okhla, Friends Colony? So how can Humayun’s

Tomb be at Nizamundin near Purana Qila and

Sunder Nagar, site? Surprisingly an unmanned tomb

is designated as Humayun Tomb. It could as well be

of Sara Shikoh or some other family of umpteem

nobles that sprang up here during mediaeval period.

    Where is Dara Shikoh tomb?

Indraprastha Qila site is a most ancient site so why a mediaeval era design Entry Gate Ticket Counter structure was approved by DG ASI? This is playing with History and creating disinformation on geo-spatial landscape of Bhartiya cities. Indraprastha has been mentioned in all texts, including Ain-e-Akabri, where Humayun attempted to create Dinpanah but was foiled by Sher Shah Suri.

Equally shocking is this new 2018 creation within Purana Qila complex. Near this location was an iconic Old School building which was mysteriously and hurriedly demolished. ASI is mandated to preserve history not 'destroy' or 'create'. Unfortunately it has done great damage to preserving truth and factual history.

located ancient Vishnu Stambh / Mediaeval Minar and related locations, and Indraprastha Development Board on likes of KDB.

Brief Background: It is shocking, painful and surprising that active prominence to medieval tombs and monuments of our subjugation are getting promoted, especially at our capital Delhi. While previous government helped in renovating these places, since 2017 these places are getting illuminated to add salt to wounds. We all know trials and tribulations of Sardar Patel, V M Gadgil and K M Munshi in recreating Somnath Temple. Then Culture was under Education Ministry so ASI was under the then Education Minister! Since then God knows what peculiar policies ASI has been following that crores have been pumped into Masjids and Tombs to ‘renovate’ them but ancient sites and monuments are lying in tatters. In the name of ‘conservation’ ancient Bharat places are kept in ruins, whereas the mediaeval structures are getting prominently highlighted in the name of Tourism. Strangely tourists who come to an India of over thousands of years of history are shown history of a few hundred years. Asi does not even actively promote ancient temples, rather underpays Bharta. This partisan approach, started post partition, got impetus during the 1970’s when, as a part of National Integration Policy, concerted efforts were made for renovations of mediaeval tombs, and even transform prominent places linked to Bharata, like Purana Pandav Qila at our national capital. As a part of this National Integration Policy few organizations were created to tilt history (ICHR) and to take forward the work of tilting perceptions about tangible heritage, prominent being, INTACH. The Agha Khan Trust for Culture was given open field for its mission to celebrate invaders like Humayun through their Museums (please also read Case of Indraprastha and ASI INTACH and AKTC). In the name of promoting art culture and social welfare of Muslim minorities, Islamization of Delhi began and has continued. Effort by these organizations to get Delhi a

UNESCO Heritage City tag BASED ON MUSLIM HERITAGE LEGACIES, was also supported by the previous regime, which was thankfully stopped in 2014 once new government came to power. Once again ITACH Delhi chapter has cultivated AAP government to restart Heritage City tag based on medieval structures. But is shocking that from 2017 the ASI started illuminating these monuments of Hindu humiliation.

This is request for your kind support for creation of Indraprastha Development Board, ( on lines of Kurukshetra Development Board), to counter the ‘fallacious history’ of our capital City-State.

With reference to above subject, I wish to inform you that sometime back I had a detailed visit at Purana Qila

st(1 after tragic demolition of iconic Old School Building). The recent renovations and new structures are not in synergy with the factual narrative of Purana Qila, rather are source of further ‘fallacious history’. Please note these ancient locations are a living symbol of India’s journey of civilization- the symbol of the rrials & tribulations of history and our cultural traits of assimilation, absorption and acceptance. I shall be grateful if ASI could kindly consider the following rectifications in these significant monuments, as per below given suggested -

Purana Qila: documentation of factual history and removal of fallacious history by -

    1. Prominent large Signage of 1911 Notification Document of [Purana Qila (Mouza Indrapath)] at entry points of the monument, Copy of Notification showcased, along with mention or copies of other Gazeteers that document Indrapath, AND Revenue District Map of 1877, Land Settlement records.

    2. Display of chronology of prominent rulers, with dates from Yudhishtra till Hemu Chand, inside the Museum.

22 The bird does not sing beause it has a reason: It sings because it has a song.

  • Draupadi Dance Drama, India International Center, New Delhi

    3. Prominent signage that mediaeval structures within Purana Qila are those built by Sher Shah Suri.

    4. A Signage This was the point of Old Indrapath School Building, with date of construction and demolition building, names of important Archaeologists who used it as office, and its important use during partition.

    5. Re-Creation of the Ticket counter having either modern structure or ancient ethnic look like cottage. This places represents rulers from most ancient to Hindu King Hemu, so cannot be showcased having only as partisan structures. The mediaeval structure is fallacious, misguiding point.

    6. Demolition of newly created (2018), red stone building inside Purana Qila, near Book Stall. This is another fallacious structure which will be gradually misunderstood and misrepresented. It makes no

sense here, as this place has had rulers of various periods not just mediaeval.

    7. Revival of old well at Qila Entry.

    8. Exposure, preservation and creation of Archaeology Site.

    Vishnu Stambh/ Qutub complex:

    1. Renaming it as Vishnu Stambh Sthana

    2. Illumination showcasing the ancient Vishnu Stambha and ancient mandir pillars/ statues, with information about temple Deities’

These above points I have requested ASI to rectify soon but they don’t care a damn.

We look forward to your kind consideration of the above, which will go a long way in propagating factual journey of our Capital City-State and shall be much appreciated.

23The bird does not sing beause it has a reason: It sings because it has a song.

The Draupadi Dream Trust has been doing intensive research on the ancient hidden, submerged or destroyed aspects

of our Capital City-State Delhi NCT. The current geo-spatial landmarks of Delhi do not at all reveal its true ancient

identity, thereby creating a wrong sense of its history, culture and archaeological remains. Some talks were given by

us on the topic, which drew much interest.

As part of our Mahabharata project, we initiated a Panel Discussion on Indraprastha in collaboration with

Vivekananda International Foundation, at VIF auditorium. The Panel speakers were carefully chosen from those who

had worked at grassroots at Indraprastha or published research papers on the topic.

    Ancient Significance of Kampilya

The archaeological site of Kampil known as the capital town of king Drupad of Mahabharat (Mahabharta 1/137/73-74) is located at Lat. 20°37'12” North and Long. 79°16'48” East in the tehsil of Kaimganj of Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh. It is believed to be the capital city of ancient south Panchala. The early rulers of Kampil relating to Krivi (Rigveda 1/30/1, 8/2/24, 8/22/12, 8/87/1, 9/9/6), Turvasu (Rigveda 1/36/18, 5/31/8, 6/20/12, 8/4/7, 10/49/8), Keshin (Shatapath Brahman 11/8/4/6), Shrinjai (Rigveda 4/15/4, 6/27/7, 6/47/22) and Somak families are frequently mentioned in Vedic literature. Kampilya is a very ancient settlement; there is a mention of goddess Subhadra in Yajurveda.
