These shortcomings and the lack of a review on the progress in modeling the climatic consequences of large scale deforestation indicate that this second edition (1987) does not represent a substantial advance on the first edition, published in 1974. In summary, the book contains some interesting information on forest structure and management practices that could all have been condensed into a useful short book with a more precise title. The December 1963 BULLETIN* carried a slightly modified version of an address delivered at the banquet of the Raytheon Company Weather Radar and Sensors Symposium, in January 1963, by Dr. David Atlas, later a president of the Society. The following paragraph is excerpted from that address.
