Membership/Name Badges/Signing In or Out
Membership is available to those individuals 55+. The
annual cost is $50 per year (fiscal year runs from July 1
June 30). New memberships will be prorated after
January 1, 2020. The cost to any current member
renewing their membership after August 31 is $55.
All members must wear their Center name badge when
at the Center. Members must sign in/out on the sheets
placed at the front and back entrances, and must
indicate if they are in possession of their name badge.
If you do not have your badge with you, please stop and get a
Visitor’s Badge from the receptionist, and when you leave, return
the badge to the receptionist.
Use Good Judgment
Participants assume the risk of taking part in all activities. The Mt.
Juliet Senior Activity Center is held harmless from all claims
resulting from taking part in any activity at the Senior Center or
by participating in any offsite activities sponsored by the Center.
Participant Code of Conduct
Any participant whose behavior infringes on the rights of other
participants and/or staff, volunteers or instructors, could result in
participant being asked to leave the center. Any concerns about
the center can be expressed to the elected membership advisory
council representatives or directly to the Center’s Director.
Inclement Weather Policy
The Mt. Juliet Senior Activity Center utilizes the Wilson County
Public Schools Inclement Weather Policy to determine its weather
policy. MJSAC will be closed if the Wilson County Public
Schools are closed due to weather conditions; all meals, activities,
classes and trips are cancelled. If schools delay opening or close
early, the Center will open or close accordingly.

Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels (MOW) still needs kitchen volunteers daily and
also drivers to deliver to home bound clients. If you can help,
please contact our OnSite Manager Lisa Cook at (615)7582777.
She also wishes to thank those who have volunteered since the last
newsletter.

your use of fragrances when coming to the Center.
We have several actually many folks who are
highly allergic to many fragrances. Please be consid-
erate in your usage. Thank you!

Kitchen/Cleaning Help
We can always use additional workers in the kitchen
for preparation, serving and clean up for Monday and
Friday “InHouse” Lunches. See Sharon or Mona.
Volunteers are the hear tbeat of an organization
like MJSAC. There is no way that our limited num-
ber of staff could produce the great programs and ac-
tivities that our members enjoy without assistance
from volunteers. Thank you to all who have already
volunteered to help in so many areas.
Please consider volunteering for any of the many op-
portunities available. See the sheets in the front hall-
way.

The Members Advisory Council (MAC) meeting
will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 26.

15th Annual Spaghetti Day:
Thank you to EVERYONE who volunteered for
Spaghetti Day! The center made in excess of
$6300 from our 15th Annual Spaghetti Day!
Whether it was packing orders, busing tables, baking
desserts, cleaning dishes, or just greeting guests,
everyone who pitched in had a hand in the huge suc-
cess of this event.
We especially want to thank the Noon Rotary Club
of Mt. Juliet and Josh Conner, Modern Wood-
men of America, for their underwr iting and
sponsorship of this event. Other significant contribu-
tions to the effort included Olive Garden, Provi-
dence (breadsticks), Providence ChikfilA (tea),
and Zaxby’s, Hermitage (containers).
Our fabulous cooks Nancy Britt, Betty Sue
Wheeler, June Rae Wagoner and Barbara Briley
spent in excess of 230 hours in the preparation of
the meals and they were fabulous!
Some 2019 Spaghetti Day Facts:
There were 45 Center Members volunteering.
There were 24 Noon Rotarians cooking pasta,
making deliveries and serving meals.
Another 20 or so from the community (including
Wilson County Mayor Hutto, and the Sher-
iff’s Department Deputies and Trustees)
worked shifts.

BINGOCIZE®!
The overall goal of a Bingocize
®
class is to help
older adults improve and/or maintain mobility and
independence, learn and use information on falls
reduction and other health related issues, while
winning prizes!
In the one month since its introduction, partici-
pants have also discovered that it is FUN!
Bingocize
®
affords those with limited mobility
and/or balance a way to regularly participate in
limited exercise that will improve lower/upper
body strength and range of motion. It is not for
someone who regularly exercises or attends exist-
ing center exercise classes.
Class is at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, and will grow
to two classes per week if there is a demand for
such. Class size is limited, so come try it and if
you like it, sign up for future sessions. See Mona
Tissue or Sharon Coghlan for more info.

Quilts, Quilts and More Quilts
In an earlier issue of The Senior Spirit, we told you about our Quilting Club becoming a bona fide
group within The Quilts of Valor (QOV) organization that aims to produce beautiful quilts to award
our long-serving veterans. Our group has now finished three quilts and one was presented on Septem-
ber 11 (Patriots Day) to MJSAC member Bob Masto, in honor of his service in World War II. The
group will be presenting two more quilts in the near future.
In addition to the QOV quilts, the group has also pieced 14 other
beautiful quilts that are available for sale on the Center’s website.
Money raised from the sale of the quilts goes to the Center, so if
you are interested, or know of those who may wish to purchase
one of these beauties, please visit (or direct them to visit)
www.mjseniorcenter.org. The quilts are pictured, along with a
description and price, under their own tab on the site (“Quilts”).
One of these lovely quilts would make a great holiday or wedding
gift.
(Pictured left, Bob Masto and wife Nell receiving a beautiful Quilt of
Valor produced by the MJSAC Quilting Club. Each quilt is accompa-
nied by an official QOV Proclamation.)

The following came to the Center from Marilyn Wade, Greater Nashville Regional Council please read
carefully!
5 Ways to Keep Your Brain Fit as You Get Older
1) Challenge yourself.
One especially useful idea is to get out of your comfort zone by tackling something new, even though you
might feel a bit befuddled at first. That sense of befuddlement actually challenges the brain to stretch.
“The comfort zone is where the brain turns to mush,” according to the authors of “Ageless Brain: Think
Faster, Remember More, and Stay Sharper by Lowering Your Brain Age”.
2) Retire to something, not from something.
Early retirement might seem like the vacation you’ve been waiting for, but it can lead to serious mental
decline. In fact, when researchers studied civil servants in Britain 14 years before and after their retire-
ment, they found that retirement presaged a decline in their shortterm ability to recall words.
3) Learn something new every day.
That’ll build up your cognitive reserves. There was a fascinating study done of London cab drivers, who
are all required to pass a test that involves memorizing a city map of 25,000 streets and 20,000 landmarks.
According to brain scans, the drivers who had passed that test had actually reshaped a key region of their
brains, strengthening cognitive function.
4) Stay connected to others.
Your brain gets a workout when you interact with other people. Inone study, elderly people who had the
least social connection at the beginning of the experiment experienced twice as much memory loss over
six years compared to those who had the highest levels of social connection.
5) Finetune your balance.
Studies have shown that people who can’t stand on one leg for more than 20 seconds are more likely to
have damage to small blood vessels in the brain, such as tiny bleeds or ministrokes. If you miss the mark,
incorporate balance exercises into your day, as well as the advice to try a tai chi class. Why? Because a
study of tai chi practitioners in their late 60s found that their stability was particularly strongin the 90th
percentile of the American Fitness Standards.
(Note: The Center offers both Tai Chi and Bingocize
®
classes weekly both of which affect balance!)
