I N T R O D U C T I O N

w h e n i t o o k o v er from M r L. R . Conisbee as compiler o f the Bedfordshire Bibliography in 1971, it was at once apparent that only the highest standard of research and scholarship could match the work that had gone before. While this immediately presented the new compiler with a daunting challenge, the true measure o f the task emerged only as the work proceeded. Six years later, he is even more aware of his deficiencies and of his debt to those who have helped and advised him during that time.

The period covered by this Third Supplement, January 1971-December 1975, was interesting in the events it included and fruitful in the local publications it produced. It saw a steady growth of interest in local studies, particularly as regard to their relationship with the total environment. This approach has been most evident in the curricula of schools and those o f adult education courses. Concern for the environment received a strong impetus from International Heritage Year in 1975 and this inspired a spate of new publications. The demand this created for ready access to existing printed sources, gave further purpose to the Bibliography.

It was in 1974 that an event quite crucial to the history o f our County took place. This was the reorganisation o f local government, which was implemented on 1 April of that year. On that day a new County Council and four new district councils were inaugurated. The effect o f this upon the Bibliography was broadly two-fold. Reorganisation brought the previously three separate library authorities under one county umbrella, so providing greater opportunity for co-ordinating their local history activities. The change-over among the various local authorities within Bedford­shire, provided a suitable opportunity for some o f these to review their history and several publica­tions resulted. The event was also reflected in features and correspondence appearing in the local press. Within a few months the new authorities were producing newsheets and guidebooks, explaining their services and expressing their hopes for the new areas. The new County Council has been responsible for many reports and studies which are of great interest to present students o f Bedfordshire and will be greatly valued by future local historians. Many of these, however, appeared after December 1975 and therefore are not included in this Supplement. To write any more on Bedfordshire publications during this five year period would be to launch upon a review of the literature and this is not my intention here.

It was obviously desirable to follow the arrangement and typographical rules used in previous volumes of the Bibliography. Any minor changes in page lay-out should be attributed to a back­ground o f librarianship neld by the present compiler. Abbreviations have for the most part remained the same. Locations have not been given for the widely held Bedfordshire periodicals. Not all locations have been given for those books which are available in all or most libraries, e.g. U nderwood, Andrew . Home Rule for Ampthill. 1974. B. C. L. M., but this book is available in most libraries throughout the County.
