Explorers When our founder Frédéric Chevalier initiated this project in 2013, he was repeatedly told he was crazy. He kept hearing things like “It will never work”. It took years for him to bring together likeminded dreamers, adventurers & pioneers to create thecamp.

Today, we are an entire ecosystem of explorers. We work with about

20 private and public international founding partners, and many organizations of experimenters and disrupters.

Our profiles complement each other: new-generation creative types (designers, digital artists, mixed-media artists, programmers), entrepreneurs, post-graduate students, international researchers and experts,

small company directors, CEOs of major groups, professionals from the private and public sectors, senior managers on training courses, young people, children…

Every day, people from all walks of life will be stationed in our base camp, for a few days or a few months. You can join thecamp too!

A quest

Our challenge is to f ind new approaches to universal issues, and to aggregate people and projects driven by the same will and excitement for the future!

For thousands of years, people have had the same concerns: What will we eat tomorrow? How will we learn? What will it be like to age? How will we go from one place to another? At what speed? Using what energy? ...

What awaits us, humans? How is life going to be tomorrow?

Through life experiences, work experiences and new forms of collaboration, we want to elicit new processes of imagination, new paradigms… to explore together a sustainable and humane future.

We believe emerging technology and social innovation (virtual reality, robotics, artificial intelligence, biotechnologies, circular economy, biomimicry, social innovation, shared governance...) are game-changing levers to explore futures we want to live in!

From our base camp, we are launching all kinds of missions trailblazing possible paths for tomorrow, prototyping solutions thanks to collective intelligence. Our compass? A humanist dimension. We orient ourselves in 4 main directions: inspiration, transformation, co-creation and impact.

Expeditions

Our hope is that the discoveries we’ll make along the way will help us shape the future of food, health, mobility, energy, education, the environment... and the many other destinations we want to reach in our quest to make world changes positive for people and the planet!

A base camp

Launching this kind of exploratory mission takes time, resources, and a friendly environment you can rely on as you’re getting ready to venture into the unknown. That’s exactly why we built thecamp.

In a natural setting of 17 acres, on the edge of Aix-en-Provence and Marseille, the 110,000 sq ft of futuristic buildings designed by architect Corinne Vezzoni recall nomad encampments, versatile and existing in symbiosis with the environment.

Taking its inspiration from American universities, think/do tanks and fab labs, thecamp is a space where innovative expeditions are planned to survey, assess and invent the future in a collaborative way. It provides the optimum conditions: a human ecosystem for co-creating, the methods and tools for prototyping, partners for innovating in the field, spaces for decelerating and activities for discovering new things and creating special bonds.

A former elite sportsman with a passion for windsurfing, Frédéric Chevalier was a born entrepreneur founding his first business aged 20 (media management services for local radios) before starting work at the radio station RMC. In 1990, Frédéric Chevalier started the digital marketing firm HighCo. Six years later, he became the youngest entrepreneur to head a listed company. In 1999, the HighCo Group became the leading European digital solution dedicated to influencing buyer behaviour. A high-profile success story.

With a passion for innovation, Frédéric Chevalier loved disruptive projects,

challenges and projecting himself into the future. In 2013, the founding CEO of HighCo quit the Group and set out on an adventure named thecamp.

The founder of thecamp died prematurely this summer at the age of 53 without seeing his project’s completion, leaving behind the work of a lifetime that must be completed by the campers' community, because the future is written in the present.

The exploration of the future is underway, the "base camp" is ready.

"thecamp is an object-world set in the landscape of Provence. It will be a laboratory, an ecosystem for creation and innovation. People will come here to work, learn, exchange ideas, play, create, meditate and philosophize. And guide the changes that will invent the solutions to make the world more sustainable, more fair, more resilient and more humane."

Pierre Guthauser, Nanaui Amoros Silva and Pape Abdoulaye Seck, " the Hivers"

Pierre, the youngest of the Hivers, is 16, French and a developer. A young IT genius who has been coding since the age of eight. Eschewing traditional education, which he considers outdated, he passed the entrance exam for the École 42 with flying colors, but chose to join thecamp to be part of the adventure.

Nanaui, is a 29-year-old Brazilian graduate of Geneva’s HEAD (Haute École d’Art et de Design) and calls herself a media designer, having created some noteworthy interactive works. Together, they want to imagine and prototype solutions to the great challenges faced in the world. They will also contribute to projects run by other campers and organizations present on the campus.

Pape is from Senegal. At 30, he’s the oldest of the Hivers, a budding film-maker just graduated from the École Supérieure des Arts Visuels de Marrakech. Making both fiction and documentary films, he won the prize for best feature film by a school at the Festival Panafricain de Cinéma et de Télévision de Ouagadougou (FESPACO) in 2015.

Nusrat DurraniA recognized expert in media and founder of MTV World, Nusrat is today a strategy advisor at thecamp. Full of enthusiasm for the project, he joined the team with the aim of developing the media and storytelling of the future.

Nicolas Bard & Aymeric GuionNicolas Bard is the founder of Make ICI, a French network of makers. He is the designer of the fab lab, where campers can turn their project idea into a prototype.

Aymeric Guion is in charge of developing special projects at KeepCool. For thecamp, he has come up with the "sporting experience of tomorrow".
