The Visiting Committee for Computing would like to comment on the

format of the last visit and suggest a few minor changes." As always the visit was well organized and the Committee enjoyed

Stanford's gracious hospitality. We were again impressed by the total

impact of Stanford as a great University.

The Visiting Committee enjoyed the considerable amount of science in

this visit. As an experiment we visited a number of facilities rather than

having the people involved coming to us. We visited the Artificial Ir.telli-

Sof-gence Project and SLAC. We feel that this was successful and reco^end

that it be continued. We hope it will encourage more attendance and par-

ticipation in Visiting Committee meetings. We had also hoped that the

meetings most directly involving the Computer Science Department would be

held in Polya Hall. Although this could not be arranged for this visit,

we recommend that efforts to meet in Polya Hall be made for appropriate

" portions of future visits.

We recommend that in the future Provost Miller meet with the Visiting

Committee for lunch on Tuesday to answer questions which occurred to us

during the visit and to receive some immediate feedback. A final executive

session should be scheduled after Tuesday's lunch. We feel it desirable

to see the Provost both Sunday evening and after the Tuesday lunch, but if

that is not possible we deem the Tuesday lunch the most critical.

The Committee believes its limited time in Palo Alto should emphasize

personal interactions with administration, staff and students. It would

like to prepare for those discussions by studying relevant documents and

material prior to its arrival at Stanford. This will both better prepare

Committee members for those discussions and make more time available to

Information Package for New Members of Advisory Structure

I have been advised that we will have five or six new members on theExternal Visiting Committee, which will be meeting on campus October24-26. The general strategy we want to use with this group, new andold members, is to confine, our verbal presentations to areas of signifi-cant intellectual interest and challenge to them where we can expectsome immediate feedback. Ongoing functions should be covered well inreference material so that they can bring up items from it if they wish.To this end, I have listed below the contents of a care package for them,to be available for mailing by approximately the end of September. V.I. P. parking permits are available for $1 each per day. The request

will be noted as coming under the jurisdiction of Provost Miller.

I will include with the request for reservations an inquiry if a

parking permit is required. When I know how many I need, I shall
