Dear Parents / Carers, Another week closer to the end of term, with Week 8 well in progress. At school we are busy completing assessment and beginning writing report cards . Parents and carers will notice, commencing this Semester, that the comments part will be shorter, where for each learning area we will give the student an achievement level, a general comment and a comment on their level of effort. Details of what students have been learning throughout the terms has been included weekly in this newsletter so we dont have to repeat and we have received feedback from parents that shorter comments are preferred in report cards. Of course, detailed feedback will be given at parent teacher interviews and at any other time an interview is requested. 1337 Amiens Road Amiens QLD 4380 T: 4683 3177 F: 4683 3220 M: 0429 833177 E: [email protected] W: [email protected] AMIENS STATE SCHOOL Mens Sana in Copore SanoTerm 2 – Week 8 Wednesday 12th June 2019 School Calendar - Term 2 Week 8 Monday 10 June Assembly Wednesday 12 June PE / Music Student Banking Thursday 13 June Tuckshop Friday 14 June Library Week 9 Monday 17 June Assembly Tuesday 18 June GB Zone Trials Wednesday 19 June Mrs Kelley at Facilies Training PE/Music Thursday 20 June Student Banking Tuckshop Friday 21 June Library Be Respecul - Accepng differences in othersIt was great to see that Education was deemed a winnerafter the Queensland State Budget was brought down yesterday. “Be Respectful - Accepting differences in others”

It was great to see that Education was deemed a “winner” after the Queensland State Budget was brought down yesterday. We are looking forward to seeing what that means specifically for our school. Some schools will be a bit cooler with $100 million for air conditioners, taking the total fund to $191 million over four years. We do see that the State will be hiring 240 new teachers and aides to help students with disabilities in Queensland schools at a cost of $136 million. As well as primary schools being the places where children acquire their academic and social foundations, our state schools cater for the overwhelming majority of children with disabilities and with significant learning needs. These include those whose family, social or economic circumstances hinder their ability to learn at school, their social development and their wellbeing.

Congratulations to Jacob and Ethan Kent on their selection to represent the Granite Belt in the Darling Downs Regional Athletics Championship at Harristown State High School on 18

th June

(Tuesday next week). The day commences at 8:45am at Harristown, reporting to your Team Manager, Mr Mac. Best of luck in the Shot Put, Discus and 200 metres, Jacob and the High Jump, Ethan!

Some more very good advice from Lyndell Brown, Family Support Service Officer, from the Granite Belt Neighbourhood Centre (Community Development Services). This week Lyndell compares and contrasts healthy sleeping, with “Sleep Wanting” vs “Sleep Well”. Please take note of the “Sleep Well” to give your child the best opportunity of learning when they are at

Amiens State School is pleased to support many Community Events in our local area. At the moment, students are making snowflakes and lanterns for Snowflakes in July. The lanterns will be used by children participating in the Snow Flakes procession. Crisp Art will be creatively and enthusiastically taken on this term, in the last week. The theme this year is “Art in Space” which should stimulate creative minds. Of course we are again supporting the CWA Schools Competition with the Country of study being Lithuania this year.

Students participating in the Sydney – Canberra Trip in October this year continue to conduct their Home Bake every Tuesday. For a gold coin, delicious home bake can be bought for morning tea. Congratulations to students for this fund-raising initiative.

In Technology, our internet speed and access in the classroom seems much better since the cut-over to NBN.

Please continue to support our school with your Earn & Learn at Woolies stickers, if you shop there. You’ll certainly notice our box; easily the most striking one.

From the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 Classroom

Last week, we welcomed Kiiyarah to our classroom. Kiiyarah is in Year 2 – now we have three girls and 3 boys.

The children and I would like to thank Ms Candi for her support and encouragement during the week that Mrs Yates was away.

In Week 7 Chase was chosen as Student of the Week. On most occasions, he encouraged his peers. This week, during Positive Behaviour for learning, the children will be modelling accepting differences in others. “We are all special in our own way”

The concepts of number, line, shapes and operations will be our focus for this week. The Prep children are continuing to investigate the numbers to 20. Last week, the Year 1 and 2 children completed three minute addition and subtraction facts – some of the children have achieved pleasing results. It is very important that the children are able to recall their number facts accurately. Number facts need to be practised nightly. 50% of the children are confident with these facts and is evident when completing their addition and subtraction sums. This week, all children will commence and hopefully complete their C2C maths assessment for the term.

C2C Unit 4 Spellings will continue until the holidays – this week the Year 1 are studying words that contain the “oo” sound, and Yr 2 are adding “ing” to words that contain a short vowel sound and double consonants at the end of words. Last Friday, 4 children out of 10 achieved 100% for their Spelling test. Preppies will be completing activities involving the letter “Q.” Reading Books – At the park, being Famous and Zara and the Band” Most of our children have completed Waddington Reading, South Australia Spelling and PM Reading tasks.

CWA entries will be completed this week. Preps and Yr 1 have the final part of their colouring in

sheet. Yr 2 have to complete title and one more aspect for their entry.

Enjoy your week.

Playgroup – Wednesday 11.30 – 1.00 Prep Playground

Rugged up, the Playgroup children ventured into the Cross Country looking for interesting bush plants to create a winter pinecone feature. Enhancing our skills of cutting and pasting,,we looked for Winter clothes in the magazines. Stamping, playdough creations, and puzzles are popular activities that are completed each week. Totem Tennis, large ball skills – throwing, catching and kicking and the Obstacle course are favourites outside. Thank you Ms Lyndell for your yummy treats this week.

All are welcome to come along and enjoy a special time with your child.

From the Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 Classroom

In Civics and Citizenship, students are learning about how decisions can be made democratically. They have learned the importance of rules and in have to describe how people participate in their community, in our case our school community, as active citizens. Students had to respond to the question posed of “Should the school have a mural painted to commemorate our Centenary in 2020?” They then shared their views and presented their ideas and opinions using civics and citizenship terms.

Enjoy your week.
