STUDENTMATINEE SERIES
NORTONCeNTeRFOR TheAR ST
the
2014-2015
Welcome to the 2014-2015 Norton Center StudentMatinee Series. This season, we want to provideclear information about our K-12 student resourcesand how educators can best take advantage ofthese offerings.
What has been selected for this season’s student matinee programs? Programs this season include a cross-section of music and theatre to reach students of all ages
in order to provide meaningful arts experiences. While educators are encouraged to carefully
read about each program in this brochure, here’s a snapshot of some of the connections you
can make in your classroom:
RECYCLED PERCUSSION • Music, Environmental Sciences
IMAGINOCEAN • Science, Communication, Theater
JUNIE B. JONES • Literature, Music, Communication, Language Arts
JAPANESE WINTER PLUM FESTIVAL • History, Social Studies, Music, Language Art
CAMERON CARPENTER • Music
THE TEMPEST • Writing, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Theatre, Geography
How do these programs help educators meet curriculum goals? The Norton Center provides a list of Kentucky State and National Standards that can be applied
to each performance or program, thus ensuring a valuable out-of-the-classroom experience for
all that can meet required educational needs.
Are there activities the Norton Center can provide to help educatorsmake classroom connections? Our curriculum connections provide lesson plans, reviewed by educators, which will help to
extend the learning in the classroom before and after each event. Often, there are additional
educational resources provided by the artists themselves that will also be made available to
educators. The Norton Center Engagement Coordinator can also assist with ideas and planning
in conjunction with the matinee programs.

Where can these resources be found?By visiting the NortonCenter.com website, educators can find an Education & Engagement
link for Learning Opportunities and K-12 Activities. Located within these pages are the
matinee programs, corresponding to State and National Teaching Standards, lesson plans, and
other information. The website also provides information, videos and press reviews about artists
on individual performance pages under the K-12 Activities tab.
How can educators be kept informed throughout the year? The Norton Center offers a special resource that is free for all educators. Sign up to receive emails
and exclusive educator information by filling out the Join the e-club form on our website or by
calling the box office. This form is located at NortonCenter.com/about-us/eclub.
Thank you for trusting the Norton Center to provide high quality professional programming to
engage, entertain and educate our region’s youth while meeting your specific educational needs.
We look forward to sharing another season of professional performances for young audiences
with you!

CuRRiCulumCONNECTIONSBecause we understand the value of instructional time and can appreciate the difficulty and expense of
organizing field trips, we continually strive for our matinee series to be utilized as an educational tool
by our schools. Most importantly, we create Curriculum Connections related to these shows and make
them available online at www.nortoncenter.com/education-engagement/k-12-activities/ at the beginning
of each season.
These state and national standard based lesson plans are streamlined to provide supplemental information
and activities that will enhance each of the performances in our series. Developed to stimulate learning
in all areas of the curriculum through the arts, the activities involve students in high level thinking skills,
accommodate different learning styles, and help draw conclusions across the curriculum.

What is music? What are instruments? This “junk” rock band pushes the boundaries on the typical
answers. Since 1995 when Recycled Percussion formed, the band has been unstoppable. Their music
became a national phenomenon week after week during their smash hit performances on “America’s
Got Talent” in 2009. After being featured on the cover of USA Today and being voted National Act of the
Year a record-breaking six times, the band gained worldwide recognition. Recycled Percussion will
bring their extreme percussion, engaging humor, out of the box music, and extraordinary athleticism to
the Newlin Hall Stage! Audience members will be given "instruments" and encouraged to join in the
music making fun!
A one-of-a-kind live black-light puppet show, John Tartaglia’s ImaginOcean
is a magical undersea adventure. Tank, Bubbles, and Dorsel are best
friends who just happen to be fish, and they are about to set out on
a remarkable journey of discovery. It all starts with a treasure map.
As they swim off in search of clues, they sing, they dance, and
they make new friends, including everyone in the audience.
Ultimately they discover the greatest treasure of all: friendship.

No Japanese required! Kyogen Theatre, a form of traditional Japanesetheatre, is designed to make the audience laugh. Performancesrepresent humorous fables involving colorful townspeople. Movementand dialogue are very exaggerated, making the action of the playeasy to understand. In addition to theatre performances, demonstrationsof traditional and contemporary Japanese culture including, tea sampling, flower arranging, calligraphy, karaoke, and much more will allow each participant to fully immerse themselves in Japanese culture. In partnershipwith Yamaguchi Prefectural University, the actors and many of the festivaldemonstrators will come to the Norton Center directly from Yamaguchi,Japan, exclusively for this special event. Come explore the rich culture ofthis “Land of the Rising Sun” through all five senses.

As the first organist ever nominated for a Grammy® Award for a solo album, Cameron Carpenter is breaking
boundaries in music. He is a virtuoso composer-performer whose approach to the organ is virtually
unprecedented, with a history of collaborations with jazz and pop artists that is more diverse than any
other organist. As a keyboard prodigy, he performed Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier at age 11 and now
holds a Master’s Degree from The Juilliard School. Cameron’s goals are anything but modest: the
phenomenally talented musician and composer wants the organ recognized as a premier recital instrument
on par with violins and pianos. As with most trailblazers, Carpenter has energy and
vision equal to his talent and a knack for engaging audiences that simply underscore
his commitment and passion for his work. His ability to think outside of the traditional
organ box, smashing stereotypes along the way, is sure to foster creativity and problem
solving in every student.

Shakespeare’s final work is considered one of his finest and most distinctive. The Tempest spins a
magical tale of shipwrecks and storms, revenge and reconciliation, and a father’s love for his child.
The play is set on an exotic island, where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, is exiled with his daughter,
Miranda. He seeks revenge against his conspirators, using his magical powers to conjure up a tempest to
wreck their ship. Through a 60-minute guided tour, Aquila Theatre will bring its innovative style and dynamic
physical approach to Shakespeare’s famous magical tale of forgiveness and enlightenment. The New
York Times has described Aquila’s productions as “Gleefully engaging…almost unbearable fun…directed
with inspiration.”

A GUIDE TOTheATRe eTiqueTTe
Please ensure that all cell phones are turned off. We expect all students to behave appropriately
without causing any disturbance to others around them. We want to ensure that everyone can enjoy
the performance. Anyone causing a disturbance will be asked to leave the theater.
Please arrive at the theater 15-30 minutes before the start of the performance, allowing
enough time for trips to the restroom. Latecomers disturb the other students and teachers
around them and will be seated during a suitable break in the program at the usher’s discretion.
Please remain in your seats during the performance – use the restroom before the show.
No food or drink is allowed in the theatre at any time.
The Norton Center staff members work hard to keep the theatre clean and in good condition for
all patrons. Please do not put your feet on the seats and be sure to keep your personal belongings
stored underneath your own seat during a performance.
Please be quiet during the performance, but feel free to laugh, applaud, and show your appreciation
for the performer’s hard work on stage when appropriate during the show.
Please remain in your seat until the curtain call is over and the house lights have come up.
Please observe the rules of common courtesy: act responsibly in the restroom lines and Norton
Center lobby, and respect the theatre-going experience of everyone around you.
No cameras or recording devices of any kind are permitted. Pictures and recordings are
prohibited by union regulations and copyright laws.
Most importantly, enjoy the show!
