TheA-30isare-interpretationoftheexcellent“Knockabout”daysailersofacenturyago,recallingtheheadydaysoftheHerreshoffManufacturingCompany,whenproductionrunsofhand-craftedcedar-and-oakdaysailersrolledoutthefactorydoorsinBristoleachspring.Shecarriesasimilarsaucysheer,sleekbowwithdistinctive“chin”,anddelicate,gracefulcounterstern.Asweetellipticalcoamingofbentwoodcompletesthesensationofsteppingbackintime.Authenticdetailslikehandmadewoodworkandcast-bronzedeckhardwarefillinthedetailsofatruelast-centuryexperience.

TheA-30isexceptionallywell-manneredundermainandjib,ormainsailalone.She’salsosetupforsportiersailingwithamastheadasymmetricalspinnakerorlight-airreacher—bothtackedtothestemheadforseparationfromthejibstay.Hersmallwettedsurfaceandgeneroussailplanmakeherslipperyinlightairwhileherrelativelyheavierdisplacementgivesherapleasantandsecure“heft”inachoporingustyconditions.Anoptionaldeeperkeelgivesevenbetterwindwardperformanceforthosenotconcernedwiththinwater.

ArtisanBoatworkshasmadeanameforitselfbuilding,restoring,andmaintainingbeautiful,classicwoodenracingyachtsfromthepast.Weandourcustomerslovetheseboatsfortheircombinationofnostalgicbeauty,speed,andsweethandling.

Overtheyearswehavehadmanyinquiriesfromcustomerswhoareaspassionateasweareaboutthesemagnificentsmallyachts,butwhowouldliketoupdatethedesignsinvarioussensibleways.Asisoftenthecase,however,theoriginaldesignsgreatlyresistmodification—theywereperfectexpressionsoftheprioritiesoftheirday,partlyduetotheruthlessefficiencywithwhichtheirdesignerstrimmedawayweight,volume,andanyotherfeaturesthatfailedtoservetheoriginalgoalofwinningraces.

TheA-30isourofferingtothosecustomerswhowanttheaesthetics,performance,andtraditionaldetailingofhistoricdesigns,butwithimprovedcomfort,anoptionalauxiliaryengine,andafewtechnologicalupdatesthatseemconsistentwiththeoverallconceptofabeautiful,fast,easily-handledfamilydaysailerandweekender.Sometimessuccesscomesnotfrominnovativefeatures,butinaninnovativecombinationoffeaturesthathavebeenwellprovenovertime.WethinkthisisthecasewiththeA-30.

GoodLooks

AestheticallytheA-30couldhavesailedrightoffthepagesofaboatingmagazinefromthe1920s.Withhergracefulsheer,longoverhangs,distinctiveknucklebow,lowfreeboard,andbeautiful,roundedwoodencabintrunk,shehasalloftheappealandauthenticityoftheclassicOne-DesignsonwhichArtisanBoatworks’success has been built.

Accommodations

Comfort is a big priority in the A-30.Wegavetheboatthemaximumbeamthatallowshertobetraileredwithoutapermit,providingadditionalinteriorvolume,andcreatingaboatthatwillsailfastandupright—aplusforreassuringfamilysailing.Thecockpitisdeepandsecure,withgoodvisibilityunderthesails,acoffeetableontheenginebox,widecushionedseats,andgoodbacksupport,unlikethetypicalracing-oriented

cockpitsoftheolderdesigns.TheA-30 is renderedvirtuallyunsinkablebybuoyancycompartmentsforwardandaft.

Whilemanyofourfavoritedesignshaveavarnishedwoodcabintrunkwithalovelyroundedfront,fewhaveanythingbeyondbare-bonesaccommodationsbelow.IntheA-30wehavekeptthelookbuthavedeliveredagooddealmore,withadoubleV-berth,storagelockers,ahiddenportabletoiletand, theultimaterarityinaboatofthissizeandtype,apairofcomfortable,built-inseats.Onecouldspendafewdaysaboardorevengoon anextendedcruise,inreasonablecomfort. Addaboomtentforanevenbettercruisingsetup.

Mechanical/Electrical

Ourexperiencewithyachtsfromearliererasgivesusagreatrespectfortheirsimplicity,and for the pleasures of using simple boats. However,werecognizethatdifferenttimescallfordifferentboats,andwhileyou’llprobablyneverseeanA-30withaflatscreenTVorvariousotherfancyaccoutrements,wehaveincorporated a number of options based on our customers’requests.Chiefamongtheseisanauxiliaryengine.TheA-30canbebuiltwithnoengine,orasmalldiesel,orforthosewhocanplugintore-charge,anelectricauxiliary.Thedieselisfittedunderasmallengineboxneartheforwardendofthecockpit,butclearofthecompanionwayandlocatedinsuchamannerthatitservesnicelyasacoffeetable.Lightingand instrumentation are specified according to theowner’sneeds.

Quality

Ourbackgroundisinhigh-endcustomwoodenboatbuilding.ThequalityfiberglasshullanddeckoftheA-30isfinishedwithexactlythesamecareandattentionasourwoodenboats,astandardwhichisseldomseeninproductionboatbuilding.Eachboatisbuiltoneatatimeforaspecificcustomer,withmanydetailsofthedesign,finish,andequipmenttailoredtohisorhertaste.WethinktheA-30 represents a uniquelydesirableandpracticalcombinationoflooks,comfort,performance,easeofhandling,and practicality.
