Abstract: In the past only very few works dealt with fossil decapod crustaceans from Slovakia. The systematic research of this group has never been fully conducted there. This contribution provides a short review of all known Mesozoic and Cenozoic fossil decapod occurrences. So far, most of the taxa were described from the Eocene and Miocene strata. Key words: Decapod crustaceans, Slovakia, Mesozoic, Eocene, Miocene. 1. Introduction The presence of fossil decapod crustaceans from the area, which is today Slovakia, is known since 19th century (REuss 1859). However, until very recently only little attention, has been paid to the systematic research of this arthropod group in this area. Thus it has virtually no history in Slovakia, except the scatte- red mentions of the occurrences of fossil decapods in the literature which have rather informative character (e.g. PAPsovA1970, 1975, 1977, 1978; PAPsovAin GROSS et al. 1973;FILO& SIRANOvA1996; KREMPASKA1998). The only systematic works dealing partly with fossil decapod crustaceans from today's Slovakia are those by REuss (1859), DORNYAY(1913) and LORENTHEY& BEURLEN(1929). Several occurrences are also menti- oned in a palaeontological textbook by HousA in SPI- NARet al. (1966). The aim of this contribution is to provide a list of all occurrences of fossil decapod crustaceans from Slovakia known to date. However, it should be con- sidered as the preliminary one, as the research is still ongomg. © 2011 E. Schweizerbart'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung, Stuttgart, Germany 001: 10.1127/0077-7749/2011/0164 2. The material can be divided in three groups: 1) Taxa collected and described personally by myself; 2) taxa depo- sited in the museums or other institutions and examined by myself; and 3) taxa mentioned in the literature only and still waiting for the re-examination. Fossil decapod crustaceans are known from several formations mainly of Cenozoic age. Up to date over 20 genera in 17 families including 6 new species have been identified (see Table 1). Still, there is yet undescribed material from several 10- calities of the middle Miocene age known to me and pre- vious studies on many geological units were simply not focused on fossil decapods. Although a great collecting bias should be considered when making further conclusions from the presented results, in some cases the studied mate- rial provides enough data for considering palaeoecological and palaeobiogeographical implications (HYZNY & SCHLOGL in press). www.schweizerbart.de 0077-7749/2011/0164 $ 1.50

Mesozoic From Slovakia there are very few Mesozo-ic occurrences of decapods known This may in partbe attributed to collection failure

The oldest decapod remain from Slovakia is oneleft propodus of a presumed paguroid anomuran fromthe Pliensbachian of the Bela Unit (MAHEr 1959) If itsaffinity was confirmed it would be one of the oldestfossil representatives of that group

From the middle Oxfordian of the Bohunice For-mation (MISiK et ai 1994) several specimens assign-able to decapod crustaceans come from (HYZNY ampSCHLOGL2009) All material originates from a sin-gle layer of white ammonite coquina (Gregorycerastransversarium Zone) at the locality Stepnicka skala(AUBRECHTet ai 2002 AUBRECHTamp JAMRICHovA2009)It comprises one almost complete internal mould ofa dorsal carapace of Tanidromites insignis (v MEYER1857) three propodi of indeterminate anomurans orbrachyurans and further unidentifiable crustaceanfragments The material of Tanidromites SCHWEITZERamp FELDMANN2008 is the only occurrence of a Jurassiccrab reported from the Pieniny Klippen Belt and fromSlovakia as well

Paleogene The Borove Formation (GROSSet ai 1984)of the Subtatric Group is known of several brychyurangenera originating from several localities of middle andupper Eocene age

Decapods from middle Eocene strata of the BoroveFm of Liptovska kotlina Depression have been knownsince the work of DORNYAY(1913) who reported thepresence of Harpactoxanthopsis quadrilobata (DEs-MAREST1822) at the locality Mnich near the town ofRuzomberok (Rozsahegy) The presence of the specieswas confirmed by LORENTHEYamp BEURLEN(1929) andPAPsovA (1970) LORENTHEYamp BEURLEN(1929) men-tioned from the same area also Raninoides fabianii(LORENTHEYin LORENTHEYamp BEURLEN1929) and Har-pactocarcinus punctulatus A MILNE-EDWARDS1862

From the upper Eocene strata of the Ruzomberokarea DORNYAY(1913) reported Lophoranina bittneri(LORENTHEY1902) and L reussi (WOODWARD1866)However the re-examination of the material depositedin the Liptovske Muzeum in Liptovsky Mikulas revea-led the presence of L reussi only (HYZNY2010)

Several brachyuran genera have been identifiedin the upper Eocene Tomasovce Member (FILO ampSIRANovA1996) of the Borove Fm The first mentionis that by REUSS(1859) who described Ranina hazslin-skyi from Radacs (todays Radatice eastern Slovakia)on the basis of a rather poorly preserved specimen (see

REUSS1859 pI 4 figs 4-5 compare with the commentsby LORENTHEYamp BEURLEN1929 12 109) The place ofrepository of the specimen is unknown LORENTHEYampBEURLEN(1929 33) noted the late Oligocene age of thespecimen however the more recent geological surveyof the area identified the surrounding of the locality asa part of the exposed Tomasovce Mb and yielded thePriabonian - early Oligocene age (predominantly latestPriabonian) (FILO amp SIRANovA1996) Remains of fos-sil crabs of Tomasovce Mb exposed in the same area(locality Sedlice) are mentioned by PAPsovA in GROSSet ai (1973)

From Durkovec quarry (Hornadska kotlina Dep-ression northeastern Slovakia) the stratotype loca-lity of the Tomasovce Mb quantitatively rich deca-pod fauna has been collected (HYZNY2007) Severalspecies have been identified Ranina sp (presumablya new species) Calappilia tridentata (BEURLEN1939)(Fig ID) and Coeloma vigil A MILNE-EDWARDS1865(Fig IB) At the same locality also heavily bioturba-ted horizons occur with very abundant Thalassinoidesburrows These horizons usually yield very few deca-pod body fossils (pers obs)

The presence of indeterminate decapod remainsat several other localities of presumed middle to lateEocene age of Liptovska kotlina Depression were re-ported by PAPsovA (1970 1975 1978) Similarly de-capods were reported from borehole cores NB-l andS2-NB of the Paleogene basement of the Danube Ba-sin and the regions of Banska Bystrica and Brezno(PAPsovA 1977)

Neogene In Slovakia there are several depositionalbasins filled with sediments of Miocene age formingonce parts of Central Paratethys

The lower Miocene (upper Karpatian) sediments ofLaksarska Nova Ves Fm of the Vienna Basin yieldedup to now six species (HYZNYamp SCHLOGLin press) Cal-lianopsis sp nov Crosniera sp nov Agononida spnov Munidopsis sp nov Mursia sp nov and Styri-oplax exiguus (GLAESSNER1928) The representativesof Crosniera KENSLEYamp HEARD1991 and AgononidaBABAamp DESAINTLAURENT1996 are the first membersof these genera known from the fossil record The wholedecapod association is dominated by ctenochelid Cal-lianopsis sp nov representing more than 90 of morethan 120 studied specimens The association indicatesdeep-water conditions (HYZNYamp SCHLOGLin press)

decapod species were identified coming from severallocalities around the PhiStovce village (SUKATCHEVAetal 2006) The most abundant are commonly completeindividuals of Tasadia carniolica (BITTNER1884) (FigIe) Less frequent are Jaxea kuemeli BACHMAYER1954(see HYZNY20ll this volume) and Retropluma borealisFRAAuE HANSENamp HANSEN2005 (Fig IF) The lat-ter has been previously only reported from the upperMiocene of Gram Denmark (FRAAuEet al 2005)

The middle Miocene (upper Badenian) strata ofthe Studienka Fm of the Vienna Basin in the vicin-ity of Bratislava represent several different facies withdifferent decapod associations The near-shore faciesexposed at Dubravska hlavica locality are represent-ed by hundreds of claws of Callianassa brocchiLORENTHEY1898 and Callianassa pseudorakosensisLORENTHEYin LORENTHEYamp BEuRLEN1929 Togetherwith them many burrow structures are preserved inseveral occasions also containing the callianassid

body fossils (HYZNYin press) Both species are cur-rently under detailed revision (HYZNYin prep) Anoth-er facies exposed at the localities of Devln-Merice andSandberg contain remains of Calappa heberti BRoc-CHI 1883 (Fig IE) Szaboa inermis (BROCCHI1883)(Fig lA) Tasadia carniolica (BITTNER1884) and yetindeterminate brachyuran claws (presumably xanthidsand portunids) The presence of C heberti at Sand-berg was already mentioned by LORENTHEYamp BEuRLEN(1929) Finally a more basinal lithology exposed in theformer claypit in Devlnska Nova Ves (the locality isno more accessible) yielded abundant specimens of Tcarniolica and much less frequent Mursia sp and un-described galatheids The Tasadia claws were alreadymentioned and figured by TouLA (1900) and the pres-ence of crabs was later noted by TOMASOVYCH(1998)None of these works however provided a systematictreatment ofthis material The material from the local-ity is currently under description

Decapods from the localities where upper Badeni-an strata are exposed show similarities to coeval verywell known decapod associations described from theBudapest area (MOLLER 1984)

The upper Miocene strata yielded up to now onlyfew decapod remains The strata of the Stretava Fmof the early Sarmatian (Serravallian) age of Zdana andSlanska Huta (eastern Slovakia) are known of some re-mains of presumably freshwater crabs (KOROSSY 1940ZLINSKA amp FORDINAL 1995) They were described asPotamon hungaricum KOROSSY 1940 however KLAUSamp GROSS (2010) recently cast doubts on their potamidaffinities

True potamids were identified in upper Pannon-ian (Tortonian) strata of the Beladice Fm in boreholePiD-l in the vicinity of the Ordany village (FORDINAL1994 FORDINAL amp NAGY 1997) and recently assignedto Potamon hegauense KLAUS amp GROSS 2010 (KLAUSamp GROSS 2010)

From middle Pleistocene strata of the Mogyorosquarry which is today in Slovakia (Muzla southernSlovakia) KLAUS amp GROSS (2010 13) reported thepresence of Potamon antiquum SZOMBATHY1916

In the middle Miocene (lower Badenian) depositsof the Plastovce Mb (VASS 1971) of the SebechlebyFm of the Novohrad Basin (southern Slovakia) various
