Last Thursday our whole school came together in a

“flashmob” event to capture the spirit of what

Harmony Day means—inclusiveness, respect and

belonging. The song chosen was “Everyday People”

and students came out of their classrooms and joined

the singing procession as it moved through the school.

The group ended on the oval, singing

the whole song in harmony, a

powerful and moving voice of unity.

Congratulations to everyone involved

for making it such a great event.

Riding to School

It was great to see so many students take up the opportunity on Ride to School Day last Friday. It’s important to remember that whenever you ride your bike, scooter or skateboard anywhere that you are wearing your helmet. You don’t always know what other people who are using the roads and the footpaths are doing and accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. We are aware that the local police have been watching out around the school to ensure that helmets are being worn so make sure that yours is always on your head. As soon as you arrive at school you need to get off your bike, scooter or skateboard and walk it to the bike racks. Please don’t jump on to ride off at the end of the day until you have reached the gates. Let’s keep everybody safe.

No School Development Day to Start Term 2

Please remember that students start back at school on Monday 29th April. Some schools in the region have this as a school development day but our students will be attending as we scheduled an extra school development day in the middle of term 1. School buses have been notified and will run as per usual on this day.

Mrs Krough on Leave

Congratulations to Mrs Krough, Deputy Principal, who will be taking leave from the beginning of term 2 to start her family. Mrs Krough is expecting her first child later this year and we wish her every success for an exciting journey ahead. Miss Brierty will be commencing full time in the office from the beginning of next term and another Deputy Principal will be in place of Mrs Krough. We are currently in the middle of the appointment process to fill this position and will notify you as soon as this has been settled.

Winter Uniforms

As the mornings start to become a little chilly it might be a good time to check that you have a jumper or jacket ready for the winter months. Our uniform shop has plenty of stock ready to go. All students are expected to wear our school uniform jumper or jacket. Rain coats can of course be worn over your uniform going to and from school on wet days.

Our annual faction surfing carnival was held last Friday at Inside Grunters

with students in Years 4 – 6 enjoying favourable conditions. The rain

threatened and the wind came up for a while but we had a great little

sheltered break that provided perfectly sized waves for everybody. The

team format saw students grouped into teams of three with a surfer from

each faction in the water for 10 minutes before tagging with a buddy on

their team. Everybody surfed multiple heats throughout the day and the

winning faction was decided by calculating which team had won the most

heats. There were no individual scores or individual winners as this was

team event. Josh Palmateer’s Surf Academy provided coaching support in

and out of the water and Water Patrol Australia were contracted to

provide jet ski water safety throughout the event. The huge smiles on all

of the students really told the story of how much fun it is to improve your

surfing in a team environment with your friends. Thank you to all of the

parents who assisted in the set up and pack away and in particular to Lane

Alver and Dave Englert who scored all day. Congratulations to Forest,

who were the winning faction followed closely by Earth with Sun in third

position and Ocean in fourth. Photos courtesy Lane Alver

School Contributions Reward Pay your MRPS school contributions by the 12th April to go into the draw to win them back.

We will draw one name out of the hat for each year level and that student will receive a refund of their school

contributions. Winners will be announced in the newsletter.

One mouse melon plant donated on the last day of school 2018 by Louie Gibbs was harvested this month. Students took more than 200 melons off the one plant. They tasted ''a little like a cucumber but also a bit like a tomato.'' They were used by the Year 4s in their green garden salad. Students have also

started harvesting

our fig tree, with some lucky children allowed (under supervision) to climb the tree to harvest ripe figs. Mrs Thomas' year 3/4 class were lucky enough to sample the delicious bounty - it was the first time for some of them. It was great to see everyone (bar one student) try something new. There's still time to enter our zucchini competition with the lucky winner to be announced April 1. You could win a MRPS Kitchen Garden Gift Pack to the value of $200 so head to our facebook page mrpskitchengarden for details.

Jump on the MRPS Kitchen garden page and guess how many zucchinis the school garden produced this season. The person who guesses the correct amount will win this kitchen garden prize pack to the value of $200. The pack consists of school-grown tamarillo, chili, pepino, garlic, perennial spring onion and raspberry seedlings, jars of tomato sauce and zucchini pickle made by the talented Jenine O’Brien from paddock2produce, and a variety of organic seasonal produce picked fresh from the garden available on the day.

Visit the Facebook page mrpskitchengarden, like the page, find the zucchini post, enter your number in the comments section, share the post, and wait! The only catch is you have to be able to pick up your prize pack from the school or nominate someone who can. And if two or more people choose the same number and win, the prize will be shared (but we’ll do our best to get more of everything for you!).

Student Health and Wellbeing MRPS Code of Conduct incorporates six core values:

Cooperation, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Flexibility, Honesty and Respect

Value—Cooperation

At Margaret River Primary School, one of our core values is Cooperation which is where we work together to

achieve success. You show cooperation when you work in a small group to accomplish a task , when you allow

each person in a group to have a say, volunteer at home to help out and when you play a team sport and work

toward a common goal. Remember, many hands make light work.

SDERA

Did your family participate in the Ride to School Day? Embrace a healthier start to their and your day. Enjoy

the great outdoors and fresh air in our amazing town. But do remember to be a good role model and always

wear your helmet when you ride a wheeled device with your child. The earlier children learn the importance of

wearing a bike helmet, the more likely they will continue to wear a helmet as they grow older. Be firm in laying

down the ‘no-helmet-no-ride’ rule. Here are some points to remember when riding so your journeys are

always safe.

Anyone eight years and younger should not ride by themselves.

Must wear an approved helmet while in motion.

Cyclists must get off their bikes when crossing a road. It is the law.

Must warn pedestrians with your bell of your approach.

Must not hold onto another moving vehicle or be towed by it.

Must not be more than two bicycles abreast on a road.

Must not ride recklessly or carelessly.

Must use the correct hand signals to turn left or right, and to stop.

Must have at least one hand on the handlebar while in motion.

Talk to your children about road rules and ways to stay safe.

Riders include those on: bicycles, scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, rip sticks and other wheeled

devices.

Let’s work together to keep our children and young people safer.

Thank you for playing a vital role in your child’s road safety education.

eSafety With your children, like content that you can enjoy together. Talk

about images that disappoint you (aggressive, disrespectful) and

why they disappoint you so they learn what is right and what is

not. Always negotiate key rules that apply when on screens,

examples: time of day – how long – which apps. If you discuss

together they are better equipped to respond well to the rules

and see them as being fair. Be consistent through applying the

rules. Discuss what the consequences would be if they broke the guideline rules. Have a contract and both sign

it! Fact: On average, outside of school, 10 – 14 year olds spend 23 hours online per week.
