Shepherd’s Sharing Nativity Stories: This weekend, we celebrate the
Feast of the Epiphany. The visit of the Magi to the Holy Family is one of the final elements in the familiar accounts of the Christmas story. So, as we approach the last week of the Christmas season, let’s review what we have learned thus far. Only two of the Gospel writers provide us with the human details surrounding the birth of Jesus. John’s nativity story is more about the theological aspects of the event: “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” and Mark starts with Christ’s adulthood.
The “Christmas story” that we grew up with and the one we pass on to others is actually a combination of the accounts in Matthew and Luke. The shepherds and angels are only found in Luke’s account, while Matthew gives us the star and the Magi. The reason for this diversity can be found in the background, the audience, and the purpose of each of these two Evangelists. Matthew’s Gospel was written from a Jewish perspective and intended for a predominantly Jewish Christian community. Luke was a Gentile and was writing for Gentile converts and takes a more universal perspective. Matthew wants to show how consistently Jesus fits into the history and destiny of Israel and how the Kingdom that Jesus proclaims is the extension and fulfillment of the Kingdom of Israel. Luke recognizes that Jesus came to save all humanity regardless of race, culture, religion, gender, or social status, especially those who were outcasts and marginalized, like shepherds.
Women also have a more significant role in Luke’s Gospel than in the others. So, the stories leading up to the Nativity include the perspectives of Mary and Elizabeth. In Matthew’s Gospel, Joseph plays a more significant role, as would be expected in the patriarchal society of Israel. Matthew also highlights the similarity between Mary’s husband and the Joseph of the Old Testament who was also noted for getting messages in dreams. Although angels appear directly to Zechariah, Mary and the shepherds in Luke’s gospel, they appear only in dreams to Joseph and the Magi, as we hear in today’s gospel from Matthew.
Another parallel Matthew draws to the Old Testament is the fact that the Holy Family would, for a time, find refuge in Egypt just as the Israelites did. Furthermore, on December 27th, we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Innocents recalling the passage, again from Matthew, about Herod’s slaughter of male infants in his attempt to kill the new-born Christ. Much the same thing happened when Moses was born.
On the other hand, it may seem more appropriate that the story of the Magi, who were Gentiles, should be part of Luke’s account. However, recall that the Magi were looking for the “new-born KING of the Jews” and that fits in with Matthew’s focus on the Kingdom. Also,
the Old Testament prophets proclaimed that the Messiah would make Israel “a light to the nations.” That “light” could be from a star appearing to these representatives of the Gentile “nations.”
There is one other detail that demonstrates the distinct, yet consistent, approaches that these two Evangelists take in presenting the Gospel. That detail can be found in the different ways each of them deals with the genealogy of Jesus. The inclusion of a genealogy for Jesus was more than just an interesting exercise for fans of Ancestry.com. It provided Jesus with the credentials that others could use to support the authenticity of His mission. While it may be easy to get lost in all the names of who begot whom, there are some key elements in both of them and some key differences between them. Both Matthew and Luke verify that King David is part of the family tree (from “Jesse’s stem”). Matthew begins his genealogy with Abraham and traces the generations to Jesus, firmly establishing Jesus as a true member of the family of Israel. But Luke takes a different approach. He starts with Jesus and works backwards but when he gets to Abraham, he keeps going past Abraham all the way to the beginning of the human race. This is consistent with Luke’s intention to present Jesus, not simply as the savior of Israel, but as the savior of the entire human family.
Renew My Church: This weekend, I will be speaking at all the Masses regarding our participation in the Renew My Church process. Elsewhere in this week’s bulletin is a statement that we four pastors have composed and agreed to publish in our respective parish bulletins. While each of us has his own style as well as his own hopes and concerns regarding this process, we have come together in agreement with the contents of that statement. We have also agreed that each pastor may add his own reflections or comments to this basic statement, to adapt it for himself and the character of his parish.

Parish Mission 2018 Save the Dates: February 24th to 27th
Sr Alicia Torres will speak to us on the Eucharist, Evangelization and Discipleship
On Sunday February 25th we are planning a Pot Luck Luncheon. Our mission will be a multi-generational event, with some adaptations to
the traditional model of Parish Mission.
Sr. Alicia is a founding member of the Franciscans of the Eucharist of Chicago on the city’s West Side. The new Franciscan community is devoted to adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament, evangelization and service to Chicago’s poor. Sr Alicia is also a 2015 “Chopped” champion on the Food Network’s reality TV cooking show.
Sr. Alicia will share with us her love of Jesus, Our Lady and cooking as for her they are all gifts that God has given her to share her knowledge and experience with God’s people.
Sister’s parish community has also been through the pilot program for the Archdiocesan ini-tiative Renew My Church and she is willing to share her experience of that process as well.
PLEASE PLAN TO JOIN US AND BRING A FRIEND!!
The Knights of Columbus Council #14553 The Knight of Columbus would like to invite everyone to come pray the Rosary at 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 11, 2018 in the church. There will be refreshment after the rosary in the Sheridan Room.
Mary’s Rosary Please join us in, our special prayer service to honor Mary, and pray the Rosary.
Renew My Church
Four Catholic parishes in our area announce a collaborative effort as they participate in an Archdiocesan process called “Renew My Church.” The four parishes involved in this process are:
Our Lady of Loretto, Hometown St. Catherine of Alexandria, Oak Lawn St. Germaine, Oak Lawn St. Terrence, Alsip
What is “Renew My Church”? “Renew My Church” recognizes the wisdom and the rich history of our four parishes individually. By sharing those strengths with each other, we can accomplish far more than any of our individual parishes. Together we will be able to share more fully in the mission of Jesus Christ. Centered in the Break-ing of the Bread in the Eucharist and the Sacraments, and given direction, inspiration and encouragement through the Living Word of God, we envision stronger and more vibrant parishes that will nourish the gift of faith for today, and even more significantly, for future generations. “Renew My Church” will help us in so many ways:
Through helping us recognize how blessed we are; Through helping people get through the tough times; Through helping people find true joy in life and treat each other like Jesus; Through building stronger communities of peace, justice and charity; Through helping all of us to witness to our faith in our communities and in our world.
Rev. Edward J. Barrett, St. Terrence Rev. Thomas Cabala, Our Lady of Loretto Rev. Michael J. Furlan, St. Germaine Rev. Dennis Ziomek, St. Catherine of Alexandria
Fr. Mike’s comments: I think we realize that parishes throughout our Archdiocese are facing the challenge of
diminishing resources, both in terms of finances and personnel. The Renew My
Church process provides us with an opportunity to address these challenges in a
constructive way. Changes will come, and some may be painful, but we rely on our
faith and the strength we can draw from working with each other.
Split The Pot Drawing
Envelope number 1484 was drawn for last week’s “Split the Pot” raffle. The parishioner assigned that number made at least the minimum contribution to both the Sunday and “Split the Pot” collections and is the winner of $4,060.00. Congratulations!

Please be generous in your support of our parish ministries and services.

Dear Parishioners,
I have asked to have my name added to the prayer list because I've been diagnosed with breast cancer. The prognosis is good and I know God will take care of me. You remain in my prayers and I ask that you keep me in yours. May the New Year bring you happiness, health and an abundance of blessings!
God's Peace, Kath Rimac
GiveCentral is coming to our parish. We recently announced a new program for our parish. GiveCentral is an online site that many neighboring parishes use to streamline their Sunday collections. The program is completely voluntary for parishioners. By signing up for the program, you will have the ability to have your weekly Church donations automatically made from your checking account. This will make writing a check or finding your church envelope on your way to Church a thing of the past. It will also simplify the record keeping we need to prepare for tax season.
The program also has the ability, in the future, to allow you to make contributions to special parish events or fundraisers. We’re excited about the possibilities of this program and will have detailed information about it in the very near future.
The Vitality Group is still looking for more helpers for the new website. and to help update Facebook. We have started a new group of people, which will work on the website and Facebook. If interested call the Parish Center at 708-636-5060.

For the past twenty years, we’ve closed our celebration of Catholic Schools Week with a Parents’ Night Out party. This year, we’ve decided to make this “a night on the town” for everyone who supports Catholic Education in all its forms at St. Germaine! We’d love to meet any of our parishioners—those who have had students in our school or religious education programs and those who know the value of educating our young people. We especially would like to invite parents of the alumni of our school or religious education program to join us to do a little “bragging” about how well our students have done! Alumni (over 21, of course) are also welcome to join us—and let us know how you’re doing. With rising expenses and fewer students, it is becoming financially more difficult for our programs to make ends meet. If you are not able to join us for the “Night on the Town,” you can still lend your support for our programs. We are planning to list individual family sponsors of the event. A booklet will be available that lists any of our parishioners who are able to make a donation to support Catholic Education. Since our colors are “blue and gold,” we will list BLUE sponsors who make a donation of any amount up to $50. We will list GOLD sponsors who make a donation of more than $50. We hope that we can count on your generosity in supporting Catholic Education at St. Germaine Parish. ********************cut here and return to the collection basket, school or Parish Center********************** You can count on me to support Catholic Education in St. Germaine Parish. Please list me as a sponsor in the booklet:

Gold Sponsor—any amount over $50 Name ____________________________________________________________ We are grateful for your support. The students in our programs will remember all our donors in their prayers!

National Migration Week: "Many Journeys, One Family" January 7–14, 2018 “I feel compelled to draw attention to the reality of child migrants, especially the ones who are alone… I ask everyone to help those who, for various reasons, are forced to live far from their homeland and are separated from their families.” -Pope Francis For nearly a half century, the Catholic Church in the US has celebrated National Migration Week to reflect on the cir-cumstances confronting immigrants, refugees and victims of human trafficking. Today, more than 65 million people are forcibly displaced around the world, and more than 22 million are refugees. The US is the cornerstone of the interna-tional humanitarian system. We must maintain our leadership and protect life-saving U.S. humanitarian assistance.
ACTION: Respond to the call and urge your legislators to protect poverty-reducing international assistance and in-clude passage of the Dream Act (H.R. 3440/S. 1615). Visit the USCCB website: www.JusticeforImmigrants.org.
