Marin Athletic FoundationProviding Financial Support

For Interscholastic and Intramural Sports

The purpose of the Marin Athletic Foundation is to save and maintainhigh school sports programs in Marin County through communityfundraising.

The Board of Directors of the Marin Athletic Foundation believes that:

- High school sports are a vital part of the high school experienceand provide important and positive educational and develop-mental outcomes for students.

- School districts need community support to keep athletic pro-grams from being eliminated. Declining enrollment and statefinancial support often make it necessary for school boards to cutback in almost all school programs.

- To insure broad participation by all students both interscholasticand intramural programs should remain available.

- An aware community will make a commitment to provide theresources necessary to help the schools keep these programs inplace.

Selection Criteria

The student athletes being honored were selected by their schools inaccordance with the following criteria, developed with the involvementof school athletic directors and adopted by the Board of Directors

of the Marin Athletic Foundation:

Athletic InvolvementLeadershipScholarship

School-Community InvolvementDeportment

These elements embody values that the Marin Athletic Foundationbelieves are vital in a comprehensive education for all young citizens.

Zack Miller

For many high school students, summer is stilla time of unbridled freedom. For Zack Miller, the summer of 2002 meant unbridled freedom— for about a week and a half. The rest of histime was spent honing his game at AmericaJunior Golf Association tournaments across thecountry. Miller has been the only winner in thetwo-year history of the Marin County AthleticLeague championships, thus becoming a two-time league MVP. Miller earned Polo JuniorAll-American honors and represented the United States in the World JuniorGolf Cup in Scotland. Miller is a senior mentor to freshmen and a member ofthe chamber singers. He works with Special Olympics and Guide Dogs forthe Blind. Miller will play golf on a scholarship at Stanford.

Branson

Emily Guerry

It’s a good thing Emily Guerry has been thesocial representative of her class three timesover — she’s had plenty to celebrate as a Bull.Guerry went from being Branson’s MostImproved volleyball player to the Player of theYear in the Marin County Athletic League as asenior. In between, the middle hitter was twicenamed All-MCAL first team, twice won theBulls’ MVP award and appeared on VolleyballMagazine’s “Hot 100 Recruits” list. In softball,Guerry pitched her way to a pair of first-team All-MCAL showings. She wasalso a member of the student Senate, a soup kitchen volunteer, a SpecialOlympics coach and an instructor to young pitchers. Guerry has earned a fullvolleyball scholarship at North Carolina.

Alex Pribble

As a writer and editor of the sports section inthis year’s Drake yearbook, critics could claima conflict of interest for Alex Pribble. But what-ever glowing headlines get written, he’s earnedthem.A three-sport athlete — soccer, basketballand baseball — Pribble starred in the first twodisciplines. He was a two-year captain of thePirates’ soccer squad and earned first-teamAll-Marin County Athletic League recognition lastfall. Pribble was a three-time captain of the bas-ketball team, including this winter, when he led Drake to a regular-seasonpennant and took home the MCAL Player of the Year honors. Pribble, whocoached basketball to Special Olympians, plans to major in political science atCal, where he was recruited as a basketball walk-on.

Drake

Allison Jane Peairs

In the world of Drake girls sports, only MerrillStubing of “Love Boat” fame owned morecaptain’s hats than Allison Peairs. A four-yearvarsity player in water polo and basketball,Peairs was a captain of both teams as a juniorand a senior. In the pool, Peairs went four-for-four on acquiring All-Marin County AthleticLeague honors; she was named to the secondteam as a freshman, honorable mentionas a sophomore and first team as a junior andsenior. Last fall, she also earned a spot on the All-North Coast Section secondteam. Peairs’ non-sports activities included Drake Students for Social Justice, the dance troupe, and the yearbook. Peairs will attend UC Santa Barbara andis planning on majoring in global studies.

David D’Ambrosio

Along with a diploma, the folks at MarinCatholic ought to give David D’Ambrosio acopy of the school’s football record book, sincehe’s authored so many of the entries. A three-year starter at quarterback and team captain,D’Ambrosio holds 14 Wildcat passing marks. He took home the team’s Most Valuable Playeraward as a senior and won All-Marin CountyAthletic League acclaim as a junior (secondteam) and senior (honorable mention).D’Ambrosio also played on the varsity basketball and baseball teams, helping the former to the North Coast Section Division IV crown as a junior.D’Ambrosio served on the student council, was a member of the NHS andCSF, and volunteered with the Seeds of Learning school-building project inEl Salvador.

Marin Catholic

Nicci Fish

After a hip injury forced Nicci Fish to miss thecross country postseason in 2001, she madesure to get her money’s worth as a senior. Fishstormed through the 2002 championshipmeets, starting with the Marin County AthleticLeague event, where she took the title with arecord-shattering time — more than a minutefaster than the previous mark on the IndianValley Campus course. She next captured theNorth Coast Section crown, and finallyfinished fourth among Division IV runners at the California InterscholasticFederation state meet in Fresno. Between races, Fish belongs to the studentcouncil, NHS, CSF, the Environmental Club and Youth and Government. Tim Morgan

Over the past four seasons, the Novato boysbasketball team hasn’t had the success it wouldhave liked, but it has had one constant:Tim Morgan. A four-year starter at the varsitylevel, Morgan ranks sixth on the Hornets’ all-time scoring list and was second in the leaguein scoring as a senior, with an 18.4 points-per-game average. That earned him second-teamAll-Marin County Athletic League honors, togo along with the All-MCAL double he pulledin football last fall, when he was second team on both offense and defense.Morgan is currently the student body vice president and is participating inthis spring’s school play, “Guys and Dolls.” He plans to attend Colorado andpursue a career in coaching.

Novato

Shannon Buada

With a reputation as “Miss School Spirit,”Buada probably would have made a goodcheerleader. Except she was too busy leadingteams on Novato’s fields and courts instead. As a member of three Hornet squads —basketball, soccer and lacrosse — Buadareceived a North Coast Section Scholar Athleteaward for every season; that’s not surprising, given her GPA of 4.33. Buada was captain ofNovato’s basketball squad as a senior, earninga berth in the Marin All-Star contest. Outside of sports, Buada was a memberof the Environmental and Prom clubs, was class vice president as a freshmanand commissioner of — naturally — spirit and rallies as a junior. Shevolunteers as a counselor at CYO Camp Armstrong and plans to studycommunications at UC Davis.

Adam EdwardWihlborg

Adam Wihlborg served as a commissioner inthe Breakfast of Champions program, whichseems only fitting, given his resume. A captainand four-year member of both the swimmingand water polo teams, Wihlborg has won theMost Inspirational award in the former and theMost Improved award in the latter. He hasbeen honored as a North Coast Section ScholarAthlete in both sports, is a perennial member ofCSF and the Redwood Honors Society and is athree-time recipient of the Governor’s Scholar award. Wihlborg was alsoinvolved in leadership class, Link Crew, the Students Against Violence club,Redwood’s blood drive and Meals of Marin. He was also a HomecomingPrince, student body vice president and recorded a GPA of 4.14.

Redwood

Charlotte Helvestine

A pun-maker might say Charlotte Helvestine“ran away” with this award. Bad word jokesaside, Helvestine was at the head of the pack asa three-year varsity runner on both the crosscountry and track teams. As a senior, shecaptained both squads. Additionally, she wonthe Most Improved Runner, OutstandingRunner and the Coaches’ Award (twice) andplaced fifth in the Marin County AthleticLeague cross country championships as ajunior. Helvestine was a member of the Students Against Violence Club, theRedwood Honors Society and Link Crew. Off campus, she volunteered as apeer facilitator for Marin AbusedWomen’s Services and was a member of herchurch youth group. She will be taking her 4.3 GPA to Stanford this fall.

Bret Pughe

In the world of sports, attaining perfection forone moment or one day is hard enough. To doit over four years is simply absurd. Yet yearafter year, there was Bret Pughe, taking on allcomers from the Marin CountyAthletic Leagueand emerging unbeaten. In the process, Pughebecame just the fourth wrestler — and the firstfrom San Marin — to win four MCAL titles inhis career. This year, Pughe won the RalphCutler Award as the best performer at theMCAL championships. In addition, he was a two-time All-MCAL second-team player in water polo. Pughe worked with the Link Crew, was a part ofthe Every Fifteen Minutes program and was a rally commissioner. He willattend UC Santa Barbara and join the school’s club wrestling program.

San Marin

Jenna Newberry

Apparently, Jenna Newberry doesn’t needmuch rest. After three years as a three-sportvarsity player at San Marin, Newberry isplanning on being a part of the basketball andsoccer teams beginning this fall at theRochester Institute of Technology. Newberry’sbest sport as a Mustang was basketball; shepicked up All-Marin County Athletic Leaguehonors as a junior (honorable mention) andsenior (second team) and was team captain andMost Valuable Player this year. Newberry also nabbed the volleyball MostImproved Player award as a junior. Newberry served as a junior classrepresentative, as senior class treasurer and also was a Link Crew memberher last two years. Additionally, she was involved in the Second ChanceRescue program, volunteered in elementary schools and in coachingyouth soccer.

Alex Roedel

He took home the Prefontaine Award, theMost Improved Award and North CoastSection Scholar Athlete honors, but the onething Alex Roedel probably cherishes themost is his bib from the 2002 CaliforniaInterscholastic Federation State Cross CountryChampionships. When Roedel finally madeit to Fresno last fall after a best-ever fourth-place finish at the North Coast Sectionchampionships, it capped a four-year questthat included first-teamAll-Marin County Athletic League honors as a juniorand senior. Last spring, Roedel took home aMCAL title as part of San Rafael’swinning 1,600-meter relay team. A perpetual member of the CSF and clubpresident with a 3.98 GPA, Roedel is heading to UC Santa Barbara, where heplans to eventually run track and cross country.

San Rafael

Kristin Doving

There’s a repetitiveness in the athletic resumeof Kristin Doving, but in a good way. As asophomore on the volleyball team, she earnedAll-Marin County Athletic League honors(second team), took home a North CoastSection Scholar Athlete award and wasproclaimed the team’s Most Valuable Player. As a junior, it was All-MCAL (first team thistime), NCS Scholar Athlete, team MVP. As asenior? First-team all-league, another NCScertificate and a third MVP title; to spice things up, she added team captain. In softball, Doving was All-MCAL as a sophomore and is a captain of thisyear’s squad. She is involved in the student Senate, CSF and her church youthgroup. Doving will attend UC San Diego and try out for the volleyball squad.

His time as a Red-tailed Hawk may run itscourse in a month or so, but with his 4.26 GPA,Jason Levy will always have his lifetime mem-bership in the California ScholarshipFederation — and his pair of Marin CountyAthletic League titles won as part of Tam’sboys tennis team. Levy won the Red-tailedHawks’ Most Improved Player award as asophomore, was team captain as a senior andhas received recognition as a North CoastSection Scholar Athlete. Levy will attend Cornell and hopes to play tennis for the Big Red.

Tamalpais

Kirsten Hextrum

After competing in three sports with theRed-tailed Hawks — volleyball, basketball andtrack and field — Kirsten Hextrum’s collegeyears will be spent competing in a fourthdiscipline; she’s going to Cal in the fall, and theGolden Bears women’s rowing program hasconvinced Hextrum to join up. During hersenior year at Tam, Hextrum was named MostValuable Player of the volleyball team andMost Inspirational on the basketball squad.Hextrum has been a three-time North Coast Section Scholar Athlete andworked all four years on the school’s award-winning paper, the TamalpaisNews; she’s currently Editor in Chief. Andrew Harley

Andrew Harley is planning on studyingbusiness or criminal justice in college. Bad guysbetter hope he chooses the former, because thisis one guy they don’t want to wrestle with.Harley was a three-time Marin County AthleticLeague wrestling champion at 215 pounds, and with his third-place performance at theNorth Coast Section meet in February, earned acoveted berth at the state championships. Afterbeing named a second-team All-MCALoffensive lineman as a junior, Harley broke out last fall, netting first-teamawards on the offensive and defensive lines and the MCAL Lineman of theYear prize. An avid musician, Harley has volunteered with the Book Bank ofAmerica. He will attend Pitzer College and play football with his olderbrother, Mark, on the Pomona-Pitzer squad.

Terra Linda

Jaclyn Juliet Loberg

There’s 30 square feet of open goalmouth for ahigh school water polo goalie to cover. It’s probably going to feel like 300 for whoeverwill be treading water between the pipes forthe Terra Linda girls squad next year, as theytry to fill the void that will be left by JaclynLoberg. For four years, Loberg has been theanchor of Terra Linda water polo, figurativelyand literally, collecting a quartet of All-MarinCounty Athletic League honors — second teamas a freshman, first team the other three years — and a Player of the Yearaward as a junior. She also took home two team MVP awards in swimming.Loberg will attend UC Davis in the fall and is planning on playing waterpolo there.

Alex Patterson

Three-sport stars aren’t unusual on this list, butAlex Patterson’s combination of disciplinesis: Football, baseball and ... politics. In additionto being a team captain on both the footballand baseball teams, Patterson has served insome capacity in student government duringeach of his four years at Tomales. Said Bravesathletic director Mike Marweg: “Alex took fulladvantage of his high school experience.”Patterson was a two-year starter in football andbaseball, helping the former squad to a pair of North Coast Section Class Btitles and the latter to its first North Central League II title in a decade.Patterson was also a four-year member of the Friday Night Live program. Hewill attend the University of Puget Sound with plans to play football.

Tomales

KimberlyVentresca

Kimberly Ventresca is one Governor’s Scholarfrom whom Gray Davis might want to getsome pointers. Ventresca will leave Tomales asa three-term class president, having held thepost as a sophomore, junior and senior. Hernumbers in All-North Central League votinghave been equally impressive— being honoredfive times, with a sixth (and fourth in softball)a strong possibility this spring. Ventrescahas been named MVP of the volleyball andbasketball teams, and also won both Best Offense and Best Defense awardfrom the softball and volleyball squads. In addition, she’s worked on thewatershed restoration project, the school blood drive and as an elementaryschoolteacher’s aide.
