MHEG-5 is an International Standard arising from work in the Multimedia-Hypermedia Experts Group of ISO-IEC. It deals with interactive TV presentation and interaction.

Developed in ISO-MHEG group and DAVIC in 1995Standardised in ISO 13522-5Adopted by UK DTG in 1997ETSI standard ES 202184NZ profile extends to include extra Maori characters and EPG keyNew Hong Kong profile released with support of Traditional Chinese

ETSI adopted DVB-MHPDAVIC spec MHEG

Exhaustive evaluations by the DTG showed that the ISO MHEG 5 standard, based on the work of DAVIC, has significant technical advantages over alternative proprietary APIs as well as the over-riding advantage of being the only open standards API available. In order to meet the very tight timescales involved, the profile of MHEG 5 specified for the launch of services in the UK omitted a number of features that were not required immediately. These were allowed for as extensions to be added in the future. EuroMHEG contains those extensions, together with European font requirements and other features that will allow MHEG 5 to stand comparison with proprietary alternatives. In partnership with European sister organisation DigiTAG, the DTG has therefore completed the specification of a package of additional features under the name of EuroMHEG. As a source of detailed requirements, the group has worked closely with Aniel, the Spanish Manufacturers Association and a number of Spanish broadcasters and network operators. However, the aim has been to design the profile for general application and to simplify the task of migrating to the future DVB MHP operating system.(http://www.anushka.eu/intellect/Digital%20Television%20Group%20MHEG_files/prospectus.htm)

A Guide to MHEG-5Profile SpecificationTelevision broadcasters and service providers around the world are steadilymaking the transition from analogue transmission to digital. To capitalise onthese new digital services, application programs can be transmitted to digitalreceivers to provide new ways for the viewer to interact with television. The mostsuccessfully deployed interactive application language for digital TV consumerelectronics is MHEG-5 which provides consistent application programs across themarket.MHEG-5 is a presentation language and its compact and efficient transmission todigital TV devices makes it ideal for incorporation into low cost receivers, exactlythe right kind of feature enhancement for ensuring the successful take-up ofdigital TV services.

The SystemThe MHEG-5 system is reasonably simple and its client software can beimplemented in a wide range of low cost digital TV receivers. The client softwareconsists of an MHEG engine (or virtual machine) that interprets MHEG applicationsand presents information delivered to it via a carousel file system or a ‘returnchannel’.The MHEG system is designed specifically for TV use and is ‘object based’.MHEG is conceived in terms of controlled placement of objects on the TV screenand is sometimes referred to as a ‘presentation engine’. In fact it also enablesmany logical constructs and in this the UK and ETSI profiles have been extendedto provide a full solution, at low cost, to the principal needs of the broadcaster ofinteractive TV. MHEG enables interaction between the user and the applicationthrough the remote control and in some implementations allows the application toexchange information with a remote server via an IP connection.

MHEG Client-Server Interaction

The MHEG programming language broadly comprises objects for presentation, links that respond to events and Resident Programs. Presentation objects includevideo, audio, lists, text and graphics. Events respond to input from the remotecontrol, a timer, a stream event message or the result of a logical condition

Page 18: 910217MHEGDOcGathered

specified by the programmer. Resident Programs are native functions, defined inthe Profile, that extend the basic MHEG and include sub-stringing and castingwhich enable the manipulation of text objects as structured data files.

An MHEG application comprises programs of two types; application object andscene object. The application object holds global objects. There may be severalscene objects for every application. The scene object(s) holds objects local to thescene. Within an MHEG application there can be navigation between scenes.

The broadcast MHEG profiles have a simple life-cycle, allowing only oneapplication running at a time. An MHEG application can launch other MHEGapplications but on doing so the original application is terminated. In a broadcastsystem, an auto-launch application may be started when a service is selected withwhich is associated. The auto-launch application can then launch otherapplications and select to tune to other services. An application leaving thecontext of its service is normally terminated, (although recent development workhas provided for draft extensions that allow applications to persist betweenservices under some circumstances). Information can be passed betweenapplications by making use of persistent store in the receiver.

An application is normally loaded from the DSM-CC object carousel or optionallyfrom the return channel or from a DVB-CI module. Data is loaded from thecarousel, and this can be updated rapidly on screen as the content of a data objectchanges. Information is presented either as ‘included’ content, where the text orgraphic is embedded in the application, or as ‘referenced’ content, which isacquired from the carousel as required. A strategy of building applications withpredominantly referenced content enables applications to remain stable, withchanging content and graphics and even detailed layout, over an extended period.

MHEG-5 interactive applications include:• Video on Demand• Home-shopping• Interactive and enhanced advertising• On-screen information• Voting/Polling• Interactive gaming• Electronic Programming Guides (EPG’s)• Style and function buttons for interactive hot spots• Linked pages of information, i.e. weather data• Resizing of video in a window.• Digital multimedia teletext• Selective viewing of news and information• Interactive games

Page 19: 910217MHEGDOcGathered

• Interactive applications for education• Multi-stream news presentation• IPTV support

MHEG and Application GenresEPGMHEG can be used to build an EPG application that has data efficientlydelivered in the DSM-CC object carousel and presented using MHEG. Thesystem allows the user to tune to a chosen channel from the EPG. Thisprovides the broadcaster with the opportunity to provide a consistent EPGrather than rely on receiver manufacturer’s implementations.

Enhanced ContentThe same types of applications can be used to deliver information tosupplement the content of a particular linear programme or advertisement. Forexample, text and pictures providing background information can accompanydocumentary series or music concerts. Games can be created that ‘play along’with the running video.Multi-viewMHEG, when running, takes control over scaling and presentation of video andpresentation of audio. This provides the means to tune to other services and toswitch between running video streams in the same multiplex. This allows abroadcaster to show more than one view of an event – for example differentmatches at a tennis tournament, different players in a golf tournament or viewsof a football match. Control of video and audio selection is achieved using theMHEG application associated with the service, not by the receiver navigator.

MHEG can also control the presentation of different audio streams related to asingle video stream. This allows a broadcaster to stream a single video streamwith sub-sections containing different content, together with more than oneaudio. The MHEG can present the subsection of the video with the appropriateaudio and associated data. This is used to present, for example, the BBCParliament Channel together with a continuous selectable news feed.

The benefits of broadcaster adoption of Open Standard MHEG/DVB SoftwareSolutions include:

Page 20: 910217MHEGDOcGathered

• Providing opportunities to develop new and profitable revenuegenerating broadcast applications• Delivering a larger market potential through low cost consumer products• Using quality, reliable, industry standard software products• Customising MHEG-5 and DVB software to client’s needs• Using multiple sources of suppliers for interactive content and authoring tools• Obtaining quality assurance from product testing and accreditation

the SIR (Script Interchange Representation). The code is actually independent of the machineand the operating system."MHEG-4: MHEG Registration Procedures, "The part 4 (MHEG-4) is a “supporting” standard, which defines a registration procedure for identifiers used by the objects to identify, for example,a specific format for a content data."MHEG-5: Support for Base-Level Interactive Applications, "MHEG-5 is intended to supportthe distribution of interactive multimedia/hypermedia applications in a client/server architectureacross platforms of different types and brands. MHEG-5 is really a simplified profile of MHEG-1. Like MHEG-1, MHEG-5 develops an interpreter for interchange. However, the interpreterhas a much more simple design and requires little resources."MHEG-6: Support for Enhanced Interactive Applications, "MHEG-6 extends the declarativeMHEG-5 approach with procedural code capabilities typical of a scripting language. It definesthe interface (MHEG-5 API) and a script engine’s runtime environment on top of an MHEG-5engine using the Java virtual machine to provide a complete solution for applicationrepresentation."MHEG-7: "MHEG-7 is a new standard that aims to basically improve the MHEG-5 andextensions, by defining interoperability, the ability for one system to communicate or work withanother, and by conducting conformance tests".MHEG-8: MHEG-XML, "This new part of MHEG will provide XML encoding for MHEG-5.At present the XML DTD is being developed".EuroMHEG API has been developed by EuroMHEG initiative [183], which is taken by DigiTAG[184] and DTG. EuroMHEG API is an enhanced profile of the non-proprietary API, MHEG-5, in the form of the EuroMHEG development group. EuroMHEG contains extensions, together with European font requirements and other features that will allow MHEG 5 to stand comparison with proprietary alternatives. The aim has been to design the profile for general application and to simplify the task of migrating to the future DVB MHP operating system.

It is a language for describing multimedia presentations as a collection of objects. It includes:

Visible objects such as Bitmaps, Text boxes, Rectangles, Buttons and Sliders. Collections of objects for displaying as part of a multimedia application (Group objects). Links - objects that trigger on certain conditions and perform a sequence of actions. Programs, either resident in the engine, interchanged (downloaded) or remote (running on a

server). Variables storing integer, boolean, string, object or content references.

MHEG-5 defines two different event types:

Asynchronous events - an event that is raised by an entity outside the engine, such as user interaction, timer firing and content loading.

Synchronous events - an event that is raised as a direct result of an ElementaryAction being executed, usually indicating a change in state of an object.

ElementaryActions perform single operations, such as:

displaying and hiding Visible objects moving Visible object setting timers setting and testing variables

An Action is a list of ElementaryActions.
