Modern Warfare 3: Find Makarov - Operation Kingfish Short Film

The popular Call of Duty series have brought out a new franchise; a short film. The genreof the short film is Action, sub genre war.

The narrative is about a team of special ops named 141 who are after a man namedKingfisher. But when they get to the base, there is no sign of Kingfisher. He is targeting

another team called Bravo 6 and the captain of that team, called Sheppard double

    crosses them.

At the end Bravo 6 are cornered, Roach a character is shot down and the rest of the team

take him to the chopper whereas one of the members, Soap, stays back returning fire. All

of this team mates are on the chopper, and he has been shot down while his team mateshave no choice but to fly off.

At the end they discover that Kingfisher is Makarov. Yes I know youre reading this and

have no idea what Im talking about, but you have to play the game to understand it.

In this short film many camerashots are used such as an

    extreme close up; this extreme

close up is used to show how acharacter feels towards the

situation that is going on in the

    background. We can see his

    quite emotional.

    Camera movement such as

    panning is used, when the

camera moves right to left andkeeping the focus on the

    subject.

Here is a medium shot and we

see to characters, the camerapans from left to right to show

    movement and to build up

    energy within then next shot.

In this medium/ long shot we

see three characters, here astatic camera was used but it

was used on a dolly, where it

can pan and follow thecharacters as they move.

We can see on the bottom

screen that there is text, thiswas inserted in to the frame

    during editing process. The text

    gives the audience a better

understanding of what is goingon, where and why.

This is a point of view shot of a

sniper looking down his scope. Now this wouldnt be possible

to do with a camera and scope, here editing was used to place

the footage of the man in to the

    scope.

I predict that masking was used. At first a layer was added on on top of the first footage. On this layer we had the scope. Then the inside of the scope was cut out, after doing so

another layer was added on top of the scope and the footage was added. This point of

view shot adds realism to what the character is doing, by adding realism and showingwhat the character is seeing, the audience can get that first hand experience of what the

sniper is seeing. Thus making it more appealing.

Here is a close up on the

subject and his hand on the

    sniper rifle. The previous shot

was the scope, and then it cuts

to this shot. We can see that

    continuity editing was used

    here. Continuity editing is the

    predominant style of film

    editing and video editing in

the post-production processof filmmaking of narrative

films and television programs. The purpose of continuity editing is to smooth over the

inherent discontinuity of the editing process and to establish a logical coherence between

    shots.

In most films, logical coherence is achieved by cutting to continuity, which emphasizes

smooth transition of time and space. However, some films incorporate cutting to

    3/9

continuity into a more complex classical cutting technique, one which also tries to show

    psychological continuity of shots.

The sniper rifle tell the audience that this character is a sniper rifle, from the close up of

the gun. We can also see that characters costume; he is wearing a camouflage ghillie. This shows us the audience that he is a sniper; this is because of his costume.

Here is a long shot/establishing shot in the film.

From this shot we can see the

set location and the backgroundwithin this shot. We also see a

    character who is wearing a

    army costume. But he is

    represented as being the bad

guy who the sniper will kill.

In the background we see a green jeep, this green jeep makes us, the audience goes its an

army jeep, which it is. So we can confirm to our selves that this is an army base camp and

the man is on look out.

In the movie many close ups are

used to show the characters facialexpressions and emotions. In this

shot we can see that this

character, Soap, is looking downthe sight of his gun. His eyes aresquinted and his face looks

    serious since hes aiming down

the gun. Soap is represented to bethe good guy, this is because he

stands out as he is not wearing a

uniform nor is he wearing ahelmet.

This is one scene, where they

have show satellitecommunication, this can be an

    establishing shot where the

satellite is the subject and hasbeen composed in the middle.

Of course its impossible to get

a shot like this. This shot wasprobably made during the

    editing process. C.G.I, computer

    graphic image.

    Here is another establishing

shot, we can see that there are

    two subjects and they have

been represented to be thegood guys. There uniform tells

us what they do and why. Wecan tell that they are snipers

    since theyre ducked down in

    cover. The background is a

slum sub urban area, but itsan army base.

Here is a close up of a character

who has just been head shot.Editing was used here to make

the shot look more realistic. We

see a bullet exit and blood whichadds the sense of realism.

Here is an establishing shot, shot

from the view screen of an AC-

    130. This is my favorite shot, this shot is very appealing and

will be to gamers because of the

realism it contains. This is apoint of view shot from the AC-

    130 camera thats used.

Once again, this shot would be

    created using C.G.I technology.

Filming a real AC- 130 will betoo expensive.

In the film, bird eye viewshots are used, this one was

    used to show the characters

location within thebackground. This tells the

    audience where they are

    going.

In this scene, a stead cam is used

    when following these subjects. A

steady cam is strapped to theoperator, whilst he films and

    follows.

The steady cam gives a smoothindication of movement and gives

a realism of tracking with the

    camera being bumpy.

Over the shoulder shots are used

too, as we can see here. These

shots emphasis the feelings theaudience have towards the

    characters

    .

The lighting in this scene was

very dark, but lights enough tosee Soaps face. This Is because it

    gives this scene mystery and

makes Soap feel that he isisolated.

    Here is an establishing shot,

    where the camera is probably

dolled up in a car. The camerapans along with the characters as

it shows the them running across

    the battle field.

    Special FX being used during

    editing process.

In the short film many camera shots were used, such a close up shots, medium shots, long

    shots, master shots ect.

These shots were used to show characters, locations, props and other subjects. There were high and low angle shots used at some points to show dominance over other

characters.Medium and close up shots were used during dialogue scenes, whereas long shots were

used for the big action scenes. But mediums shots were used too.

Shot reverse shots were used for dialogue and to contrast characters, such as captain Pricewho is high in power, and Ghost who is less dominant within the team.

There was only one camera movement used in this film, this was panning. Panning wasused to follow the action , therefore it made the audience feel if they were in the action,

especially during the point of view shots.

All of the main characters that were in the film, were framed to be in the shots, like in the

middle, therefore by making them the main subject.

In the film, the editing was very slow paced in the beginning. This built up tension and

drama towards the middle, where the editing became fast paced, with faster cuts and

faster movement within shots. This fast paced editing represented the speed and energy of

the characters and the scenario, which is war. Because war cant be slow. Its fast paced, just like guns firing and people running.

The colour in this film was corrected when it was being edited: high contrast, especially

in the shadows, and low saturation in the warm tones, slightly raise the black output ofgreens and blues (like 5-15 points/ units if using levels curves, or 3 way CC).]

This can give us the Bleach bypass effect; where it looks more dramatic.

This color effect gives the film the war look themed film

In the film there many sound FX which were probably inserted during the editing

process. These sounds were, gun shots, flash bangs, mechanical sounds, un natural

sounds, ambient and non ambient sounds, explosions, bullets shells ect. These sounds would be very hard to record while recording real time, but these sound

effects give realism that a character is dying, or shooting a gun or firing a grenade.

In the cross fire scene, background music was being

    played. This background music

was very sad and slow pacedand complemented the moving

image since it was in slow

motion. The slow pace sad music went

well with the scene the music

had an effect where it made the

    atmosphere sad.

Dialogue was used in this scene, many characters spoke, and there were many accents, such as American, British and Scottish. These voices tell the audience where the

characters come from and you can tell how they feel by the pitch of their voice.

  • 8/3/2019 9 pages of media!

    9/9

The rhythm of the music was very dynamic at times, this was because the action, for

example the crossfire was very fast paced and very energetic. The sounds were diagetic,

sounds that the characters can hear.

The costumes of the characters were very stereotypical. We can see that the film was war

based, so military like costumes were worn. Such as the sniper in the Ghilli suit, or thesoldiers wearing the army uniform. From wearing these costumes, these added a sense of

realism to the film, thus making it more appealing.

The props used in this film were very believable, such as the guns. The guns were animportant prop as they were needed to make the film look realistic. With the aid of

editing and blank rounds, the guns were very realistic.

In the film the good characters were represented with the use of dialogue and lighting, where as the evil characters were represented as the bad guys
